A friend of mine who has raced all his life took an absence for a couple of years to race open cockpit volkswagons. He has just bought a used Tuono. The bike looks new and the previous owner, the second, only rode it about 300 miles and said that was enough and sold it to my friend. I has all the R mods done to it. Can't tell its not an R model except by looking at the title. This thing makes some serious hp and torque for a Twin. He has the race setup on it now and that thing rocks. Not my cup of tea but it still rocks.

Any thoughts on the mods, why its set up like an R, I mean everything that the R has this bike has. Could all this been added after market? I mean from the suspension to the wheels, even the carbon fiber trim pieces. Has both of us a little baffled. Help anyone? Mike in Fremont

first -- it's aprilia. not aprillia....

as far as what's been done to it? i don't know -- but they don't list any current bikes except the Tuono R (the RSV-1000 or mille has multiple variants that include different suspension upgrades, but unsure on the Tuono)

His has the Ohlins front fork tubes and steering dampner and a Ohlins rear with the race only cans, same wheels and discs, he has a carbon fiber hugger and carbon pieces around the motor and fairing. I will bet its been dropped but not wreched enough to have a salvaged title.

Unfortunately, Aprilia's don't hold their value as well some other exotics. It is possible to buy a used Tuono and bolt on all the goodies from wrecked "R's". Hell, my Falco now sports an RSV swingarm and carbon rear hugger. Not to mention an RSV rear shock and Ohlins steering damper too.

So in short, it's possible that someone got a good deal on a good bike and a little more money and hunting around, made it a GREAT bike. I have a friend that did pretty much the same thing with his 2004 RSVR. He has pretty much turned it into a a Factory. My Falco will be the "Factory" they never made soon. B)

Guessing it might have been wrecked. Then, possibly, took the check that the insurance company wrote to fix it and did the mods himself. The cost difference between regular parts and 'R' parts might equal the labor charged to install said parts, so, it ends up being a wash.

There's a dealer down the street from me and he's had last years model of a Tuono "Factory" with tig exhaust and race chip - unsold. It's an awesome bike but was too tall for me. It has ALL the goodies... Marchesini wheels, Ohlins components, carbon fiber bits, etc.
