My apologies if this has already been covered: Is the controller for the Audiovox CC okay in the elements, or must it be covered/kept dry? I intend on ordering one today. No Checkers out here in Indiana, and JC Whitney is back up to $149, but I can get one on Ebay for around $83 I think.

I have seen some excellent posts regarding the physical instllation of the unit, but haven't found the wiring schematics for install. If someone could direct me, I would be most appreciative.

The AVCC servo unit (with the throttle cable) is very weather resistant. I have my servo mounted down by the rear wheel so I sealed the wire passage but if the unit is anyplace else it doesn't need sealing. The control pad is not weather tight and needs to be sealed. There are detailed directions with pixs in this Forum. The previous link is only one of the ways to seal the pad.

There is no wiring schematic from Audiovox but in the Install Manual all the connections are spelled out with a description of where all the wires should go. You can take a look at the FJR1300(dot)Info site for one install procedure.

Edited: Someone did post a most excellent schematic for the AVCC, let's see, search, search, search --- DING!!! Ahhh, it was dbx, see the schematic here.

$83 was the best price i could find. i siliconed the back of the pad like a lot of others and have ridden in a lot of rain with no problems so far. i did leave a hole that is partially protected in the bottom so that anything that got in would flow out the low side. i cut almost all the wires and soldered them back together to get rid of the rats nests. if you have any questions during the project give me a call (315)877-6820. i can take pictures and get them back to you pretty quick most days.

Sealing the back of the pad is necessary but it is also very necessary (IMO) to seal around the 'switches' on the front panel. The 'switch' is actually a rubber membrane with little carbon dots on the back side that makes half of the switch contact. At each switch location the circuit board behind the membrane has a set of interlaced conductors that make up the other half of the switch -- picture your fingers interlaced but not quite touching. When the switch is pressed, the carbon dot shorts these conductors together completing the switch. A water drop will do the same thing, especially if it isn't clean water such as wash water. If water gets on the ON button, the CC will turn on and you won't be able to turn it off. If the CC is on and you are going around a corner and water unexpectedly makes the ACCELERATE circuit turn on, life could become an adventure. I popped the switch housing open then used a toothpick and RTV to draw a narrow ring of sealant around all the openings. It doesn’t take much to do the job, just be sure the RTV stays off the black carbon dots and off the interlaced fingers on the circuit board.

As noted in a previous post, you can see the RTV job as well as the interlaced gold fingers here.

I have not had any issues but I had the Skyway mount. I have used it in some very hard rain without any issues.

I'm using the Skyway mount also because it looks like a factory install. But it's still critical to seal the rubber membrane or water can get in. I regularly ride in heavy rain and no problems with my Audiovox that's properly sealed.
