Perhaps the answer is, 'just because they can!'. That is usually one of the lines I use as to why I buy another bike. But even if that is their answer, I would still have to ask your question again John.....WHY!

I LIKE to pilot my motorcycle. Why would I give up that role to a box of semiconductors?

I don't think the goal is to have all motorcycles be autonomous in the future. But if you think that's where we're headed, it would be the dumbest idea ever. In the future there will be robotic pods of some type running around to move people and things from place to place. Possibly someone envisions that pod being a 2 wheeled vehicle with some type of gyroscopic balancing. Who knows where technology is headed for sure?

I test autonomous vehicles for my real job. Amazing stuff to witness behind the wheel of one of these incredible vehicles.

All I can say is... I want to drive my own car and ride my own motorcycle. However, I'm still happy to work on the technology of future transportation.
