Cant wait to see/hear this plane. DR

Go early, if you want to tour her. The last time she came to Manchester, NH, the lines to walk through her were hours long.

There is absolutely nothing in this world like the sound of those radial engines at full roar. My favorite bomber has always been the B-17 and for fighters, it's the P-51. Another unmistakeable sound! If they come near western New York, I hope to be able to shell out the $$$ for a ride in it. I pledged to myself that before I leave this world, I want a ride in one. SImply awesome machines.

They're also going to have the P-40 at all locations. :yahoo:

One has to admire the bravery of the individuals who flew those planes in anger. Hours at altitudes over 12,000' in an unpressurized cabin with no heat. Then to get shot at?

Hoo-rah!

We romanticize the aircraft and crews. In the late 60's-1970 I flew in a C-47 (R4D/DC-3) @ NWC China Lake. Loud, rickety-feeling, shake-rattle-and-roll...but in retrospect: FUN!

If you get a ride in the B-17, take your ear plugs! The noise from radial engines is enthralling at a distance...not so much when one is up close and personal, riding in an uninsulated metal tube-shaped echo chamber.

Very cool! Love those old war birds form WWII.
Shame on You Bluesy, for talking about SacramentoMike, Dr. Rich and FastJoyRide that way!

https://www.azcaf.org/ If you really love those old war birds from WWII, come on over to our CAF Museum at Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona. Fabulous collection and rides!

Commemorative Air Force Museum

The Commemorative Air Force, a world wide, all volunteer non-profit organization, is dedicated to the preservation in flying condition of the great war planes that dominated the skies of World War II.

The Confederate Air Force Museum at Falcon Field is home to the authentically restored World War II B-17 bomber, "Sentimental Journey." Out of the 12,731 B-17s built during WWII, there are about 13 left flyable and approximately eight flying in the United States.

In addition to "Sentimental Journey" the CAF Museum also maintains a B-25 Mitchell bomber, SNJ, C-45, and a Grumman Guardian.

One of a few life regrets for me - Reno air races 1979 I was offered a ride in a P51, *running the course*. It was late, and I had to be back in LA for work the next morning or lose my job. I should have lost that stupid job... :angry2: :glare: One lifetime opportunity missed. If you have the chance and $$$, hitch a ride and take your GoPro.

Richard? Take a ride for all of us, eh?

Me and my sisters paid for my dad (WWII vet) to take a ride in a B-17 a few years ago. He had a great time but said he was not always so sure the thing was going to stay in the air! I'd like to try it once as well, but definitely would prefer a fighter ride if it was possible.

At the last Tico warbirds airshow, they had 3 B-24s, 2 P-51s, and something like 10 or 12 T-6s of all different variants, all flying at once. And later a B-2...the "Spirit of Pennsylvania"... whew. We have a B-17, but she was down for corrosion repair.

Hearing 3 B-24s take off one after another was worth all the sunburn. One of the P-51s yanked it hard right at takeoff and almost touched a wingtip. Boy, did the crowd jump.

I hate to say it but you are right! I need to get out there and see that place. I have been to Mesa twice for work but didn't have time to visit. That is on the bucket list. That and Heart Attack Grill. ;)

Same kinda story here, years ago the Confederate Air Force was touring a B-17 and a P-51. We went to the airfield and went through the B-17, amazing how small they really were. Rides in the P-51 were $250 for a half hour spinn. Had the rent money in my pocket, and really considered what excuse I could use to buy time, but did the responsible thing, Damm it.

If I saw/heard that, I'd **** my pants. :yahoo: The B24 is an awesome sounding aircraft...not that the 17 isn't! Usually every year we get a visit from the Collins Foundation's "Nine-O-Nine" (B-17) and their "Witchcraft" (B-24). According to Collins Foundation, their B-24 is the ONLY B-24 left flying in the WORLD.

I have been in and out and up and down through every nook and cranny in that airplane. I have not yet flown in it. I will LONG before I fly in the B-17. The B-24 is a $450 ticket for about 30 minutes. I've been in line to go twice now but got the boot because I was too far back in the reservation.

I had the unique perspective to fly right over the top of both these planes a few years ago. I was flying a C172RG Cutlass in the pattern doing some crosswind landing/departure practice one day when the Warbirds came in for an Airport Day visit. As each approached on their final for RWY 29, I did my downwind for Rwy 25 right over the top of them separated by maybe 500'. The timing was impeccable and it was an awesome perspective that not many get to see in realtime. The image is ingrained in my brain still today.

You Westcoast guys that wanna ride in a P51, I could probably make that happen. It'll cost ya, though. Usually a $500 donation to the California Waterfowl Association! :p One of my Duck Hunting chronies is Dan Vance. He owns "Speedball Alice" a fully restored P51D. It used to belong to his dad, Art, who I also knew. If you followed Unlimited Air Racing and Reno for more than a few years, you know Art Vance. Dan's still heavily involved as well. Unfortunately, a week before duck season started back in Oct '06, Art was killed when the Hawker Sea Fury he was ferrying to a show in Arkansas developed trouble and he was setting it down on a freeway. All was good till he clipped an unseen wire over the road causing him to lose control to close to the ground and the plane wadded and burned. A damned shame.

One thing later on this summer is my B36 run to Atwater then onto yosemite. Atwater has a Convair B36 (Postwar), Peacemaker amongst other museum warbirds. Looks like there is picnic benches under the wings so you can hang out and enjoy lunch. This is a must do for me this summer. dr

Blessed be me, for I have has the good fortune to spend a bunch of hours in Evergreen's B-17, before it was parked in the museum. Likely for good now since it would need several $$$ issues fixed, including a wing spar.

My good fortune extended to some very limited time in the left seat, since I have steered a few old critters around in the past.
