It's trailing an air data cone that is used to gather information on the test flights. It just isn't visible in the photo.

SO grateful I'm retired now and don't gotta worry about any of the logistics with that plane. They'll be coming here to Abilene, TX (Dyess), but will be nice to see them flying overhead whenever they do.

Huh. Is that plane labeled FJR. Is that why I'm seeing it here. I'm a bike guy and don't know much about planes, but Im pretty sure this is the wrong group for aeroplanes.

If it was RC, it wouldn't need the wire (unless it was a trailing antenna). OTOH, maybe it is just an incredibly detailed kite.
