That solid fairing on the BMW 1200GT looks like it is still the original clay model done as the concept design... But, yes the bike could grow on you given all the other goodies available with it.

And the beemer's pumkin looks cool. Kinda like a robo-cop elbow joint.

Here is my friends assessment of the GT copied from his post on a BMW board:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After riding the new GT without the key as far as I could push it, I was still happy! Well, I tried to get a ride on the new GT and like most came up short. The GT was not available unless you were in line before the doors opened! I did however ride the K1200S and rode behind the GT. The ride was escorted by two very nice people on RT-P's. We rode a very, very slow, 17 miles and I was able to shift into 3rd once even though I was only able to reach about 4500 rpm before I was forced to get on the binders hard! I did play with the GT in the show room alot though. I took a good many pictures and wish I could share them here! There were two things I found bothered me with the bike. I am 6' 155lbs (skinny) and was not able to get it off the center stand without a lot of effort. Much more difficult than the R bikes. It also appears you will not be able to drive it off the stand as you can with a little rock back and some gas on the RT. The bigger issue was how loose feeling the grips were. The whole assembly on both sides rotated with about 1/2 inch total travel, this includes the brake and clutch levers. They are mounted diffrently than have been on other models and have a small metal bracket on the bottom that connects to the bars with rubber gromets. Weird and may end up as a dramatic loss of feel for the road. This may have been to lessen vibration or may have just been a assembly issue by the dealer or a preproduction issue. The salesmen was not sure what it was either. Realizing it is brand new it would have been nice to have people more knowlegable of the product at the show. The people at BMW were very nice and honest though. My wingman was there with me. He bought a 06 FJR and was just as enthused. The Yamaha people there were a lot less knowledgeable and willing to assist with the FJR than the BMW folks were about the GT. We finnaly tied them down and there best answer was it was preproduction and they knew no other particulars than what was written on the poster. This leads me to my final issue which goes equally for both bikes. The question of when they will be at the dealers and available was still uncertian and was only a quess. Hopefully someone here can clear some of the issues. None of them will keep me from buying the bike as soon as it is available though. I may have to replace the above mentioned rubber gromets with small metal washers though. One last note, the photos do not do the color justice. Both the very pearly white and the grey were very glossey and very good looking in person. The huge slab on the side is shaped a little diffrent than the S but is the same size. There is a triangular indention near the rear of the pannel and in my opinon a cut to fit this triangle, black or gray reflective type decal would do wonders for visibility at night from the side and tone down what looks like a wall mounted on each side.

Personally I agree with the "stuck a piece of sheet rock where a fairing should go" view and did not buy it 95% because of ugly aestetics 4 % cost and 1% BMW dealer.

We really could not figure out why the both assemblies on the handle bars had travel in them. Any thoughts Warchild?

FJRRocket - I am sorry but the 06 will be my virginity loss to a FJ. I can't give a comparison on earlier models other than what you can see in a pic. But I found this seat comfy for my 3 minute run.

I maintain a list of FJR riders in the North Atlanta area, approximately 15 FJR's and several other marques as well, mostly BMW. We have a great group of riders that get together quite often and head for the hills to ride on weekends.

If you would like to join us, please send me your email address and I will include you on the list. [email protected]
