I replaced my tps about 500 miles ago. The bike wasn't gaining power smoothly under 2000 rpm, and still isn't after the change. Runs fine otherwise though the gas mileage has droped from 45 mpg to 42 to 3 mpg. It's an 05 with 27k on it. did someone mention plug wires could cause this?

Plug wire could be it, but I had better luck and pretty good results by cleaing the wiring harnes connector under the gas tank up near the steering head. Can't locate the link to it right now, but cleaning the corrosion off this simple connector made a world of difference for me under 2,000 rpm. Previously I had very little power down low and then a massive hit above 2500 rpm. Now it's strong everywhere.

Clay, thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it. Fresh plugs didn't fix the problem, and I checked the valve clearances and they are good.

I always doubt the ever popular problem of "bad gas", at least that gas in the tank. Having put on 1.8 million miles on cars during my career in sales and prolly 200k on bikes, I gotta say I've never had any bad fuel. Bad gas, maybe, but no bad fuel. Most of the time I bought the cheapest stuff I could find.

FWIW, I just did the valve check on my 05 last week and they were all in spec @ 29,000 miles.
I said the same thing until two years ago when my wife bought a full tank of really BAD fuel at a Conoco station. The car went about one block then stopped. Towed to nearest VW dealership which was 140 miles away in Houston.

When the dealership drained the gas in the tank it looked like dark root beer - complete with the frothy head. They gave me a pint sample of this watery frothy mess for insurance purposes. It didn't even smell like gasoline.

So, after $375 in towing charges and $1500 repair bill to drain the system and install new in-tank fuel pump and clean the injectors and system and several calls and letters to Conoco they sent us a check for the entire repair/tow.

The gas station denied it was a problem they had anything to do with - even though the car was nearly empty on gas when she filled it up at their station.

So, it does happen.

My bike has done something similar... I have an 07 with about 3500.00 on it now.. When I just bought it, the wife and I were climbing back up out of Palm Springs, when it began to surge heavily we were following a line of traffic out of the desert so it was a slow climb I:E low rpm, once we got out from behind the line of traffic and opened her up, it was ok... I was also low on fuel and it was very warm... I had another similar experience climbing Palomar Mountain, again going up in altitude, it started bucking again but not as bad, and my fiance was with me this time as well in other words low rpm being conservative.... :)

I called a local dealer here in San Diego the guy I spoke with right away was familiar with the problem and said bring it in let Me run the VIN he did and ordered a new CPU said He will call when it is in... There is also a recall on the trunk mount, I guess there is a problem with it fatiguing...
