Is there a max allowable total weight one should use in balancing a typical car tire/wheel?

For instance if more than 100 grams total weight is attached to the wheel should the tire be repositioned on the wheel and balanced again?

I'd think there are guidelines but I haven't seen them.

The tire manufacturer will have a guideline for max weight to balance. More than their max, you generally get a replacement tire if nothing else is wrong with the wheel, etc.

I used to work in a garage a long time ago bustin' tires. If you think the tire is taking too much weight try rotating the tire on the rim and rebalance it. You can also try balancing the rim with out the tire and see how much weight it is using. IF the rim takes a lot weight to balance it then you know it is not the tire. Also check and make sure the rim is straight. If it has hit a pot hole or gone off a curb it can get tweaked and need straightening. Between the two tactics you should be able to tell if it is a rim issue or a tire issue.

I worked in a tire shop while attending college and found anything over 3 ounces a side was suspect. As stated previously rotating the tire 180 on the rim would eliminate the rim being damaged. The higher quality tire would always balance out with less than 1 ounce a side. Light truck tires may take up to 8 ounces total before even suspecting a bad tire-rim.

My experience with mounting and balancing tires (current year Star ProMazda, and current spec Formula First) has been that anything more than about 2.5-3 oz it is time to replace the wheel. But like everyone has said before, rotate the tire 180* on the wheel then try to balance the wheel without a tire on it. If you are still using an abnormal amount of weight then replace the wheel.
