I have been working with Ed's tutorial and things have begun to click. Fairly easy and better than S&T once you get your head around how the data is stored and organized. Despite the complexity of the trip, I think it will be easier to build it again from scratch. Less liklihood of an error due to Basecamp misinterpreting something from S&T as well.
I had started the routing in S&T before I started working on Basecamp.
You're on the right track. So much easier to just create routes in Basecamp and import to the GPS. The share functions are easy, and really as you said, once you get to understand how this works, it is no more difficult than any other software.

I need to read Ed's tutorial too. Until then, I've found a good workaround.

  1. Make map in google 'my maps'.
  2. Export to KML
  3. Translate KML to GPX using gpsvisualizer.com
  4. Download as 'Save As' to name descriptive
  5. Double click downloaded file, automagically opens in BC
  6. Find the tracks generated by gpsvisualizer then convert to route
For some reason, when using BC, it doesn't find the cities I want. Google does, always. Yes, I have the newest maps installed in BC. I'm on a Mac.

Ok then, off to sleep. Day 3 of the big Spearfish adventure awaits, and I have routes already made!

Agree, Googlemaps is awesome, easy and maybe soon BC will get a GUI and similar design to bring them into the 21st Century.

Until then, I'll still use the old fashioned BC I guess, cuz those file conversions never worked out for me very well.

My first attempts with BC, not too bad. I made individual "steps" to get from home to Mobile, Al and transferred them to my gps. I figured having smaller routes to begin with means smaller changes if/when the gps screws up. After a couple of edits I caught on as to what I needed to do to get it right the first time.

After all were done and imported to my gps without change I joined them to make one long route. Then I deleted all the steps from my gps and transferred the single long route and previewed it. Perfect!! No changes at all. Looks like I'm on my way to Mobile!! Leaving tomorrow morning with my long-time HD riding bud, US Navy Submarine reunion and some leisurely riding combined. He's not the "typical" HD guy- he and I have been the length of the east coast together except Floriduh.
