I got to the battery on my new 2013 yesterday to add some farkle wiring -- removing the panel(s) is perhaps a bit easier than the Gen 1 and Gen 2, I think -- and came across the same problem I have had in the past. Namely, that the @#%&* terminal nut falls down so far that the bolt cannot reach it. I have had to jury-rig something so that it will sit higher to engage the bolt. Why is it designed like that? Am I missing something obvious that would aleviate this frustration?

For what it's worth, I took some masking tape and added multiple layers to one side of the rectangular nut, used scissors to trim the excess tape off, put the nut back into the terminal housing with the tape on the bottom, forcing the nut to sit high, and it worked fine. There must be an easier way that I'm too dumb to see!

Another way to deal with your falling nuts, is to use a small piece of foam insulating tape on the back-side. Shorai actually provides battery nuts with this to hold them in place and give plenty of room for the bolt to penetrate.

This sounds worse by the minute  .

Clip a small piece from the end of a platic zip tie and bend it in half. Wedge it under the nut and when the plastic spring back it will hold the nut in place.

You guys are awesome.

I find this only happens when we try to add something to the terminal besides what the manufacturer provided. Can't we just buy slightly longer bolts? Why can't they just put the nut higher in the piece and leave a hole for the bolt? Why must things be so damn difficult.

Oh yea, one more question. Why did Yamaha leave a cavern of nooks and crannies under where you put those nuts into the battery?

Can't count the number of times I've dropped nuts, bolts, washers, and plastic rivets down into the various nooks and crannies of my FJR. Frustrates me that I get so butter-fingered when I'm wrenching.

Yep. Longer screw, one that doesn't bottom out into the battery is the long term solution.

Oh, RIP Odot's nut.

And best of all - drumroll please - snip a small end off a battery vent hose. Slides under the nut, stays there due to inherent springiness of tubing, lasts longer than the battery, and does no damage if it does fall out. Your MMV and some nuts work better than others. CC

Reckon you could find something to suck it back into place, while you're screwing it?
