Some interesting comments--thanks.

Some who have replied don't like labels. No problem. I don't necessarily like being labeled either. Usually they’re inaccurate or restrictive.

Ironically, those here who least like labels should, in some ways, feel complimented by my question. They are more likely to be those who ride a motorcycle for pure enjoyment/sport rather than to establish an identity...genuine purists, if you will.

An illustration: I have several acquaintances who ride and nearly always dress with motorcycle logo'd clothing when they're in public. It appears to me that they need people to know that they ride a bike, and more importantly they need people to know what brand of bike they ride. Somehow that establishes an identity.

I know, I know...live and let live. But sometimes it’s a bit much.

Here’s my point, and it's one of the reasons I subscribe to this board: It seems to me there are far more purists than poseurs on this forum. Yah, that might be a label. But it might also be a compliment. ;)

YMMV

Horsecock! What about those who ride motorcycles because they need to get somewhere? I can't imagine a worse type of poseur who rides a motorcycle for "pure enjoyment/sport." Maybe some of us simply use our bikes as transportation.

If you're riding for "sport", you should be on a track, not on the street. If your riding for "pure enjoyment" you need to re-examine your physical relationship with your "significant other" (or at least buy your hand some flowers).

The BIG problem with this statement is that Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Ducati, et.al., sell some REALLY crappy clothing, compared to Milwaukee's Finest and the Power Ranger Squad. Gotta give the pirates props for the quality of their costumes. :p

And I'll say it right up front....if, while reading this thread, anyone who thinks they're a "purist", you're not...you're simply an elitist prick who thinks he's "special" because he rides a motorcycle.

Christ, riding a motorcycle is no different than driving a car, except it's faster, probably more economical, and certainly more likely to get you killed. It's just transportation. That's all it is. If I could get a Segway that would do 80mph, give me a 200 mile range and recharge in 15 minutes, I'd be on it, rather than my Feej.

The problem is, the biggest poseurs ARE the purists. Just like the geeks driving around in their early 60s MGs and Healeys with the tops down in a rainstorm, wearing their Kangol caps and blowing bubbles outta their pipes.

Dumbest thread EVER.....and proud to be a contributor! :yahoo:

Howie, ya senile old fecker -- did you wake up this morning and forget where you live? Ferchrissakes, of course YOU don't ride for pleasure or sport -- ya live in Florida!!! Wake up and take yer damned dementia medicine, huh?

It's flat where you live (where 25 foot elevation changes qualify as "mountains"), nearly all corners are right angle turns, the roads are dead straight for miles, ya got dead people driving Cadillacs (at 20 mph) everywhere, radar traps waiting to ticket any youthful right handed exuberance, it's hot and muggy, and the scenery changes little, except when you're passing through some urban ghetto stretch. No wonder a Segway makes sense to you.

If your riding for "pure enjoyment" you need to re-examine your physical relationship with your "significant other" (or at least buy your hand some flowers).
E.g., your manatee, burro, sheep or goat? Must you have a long term relationship with the manatee, or does sleeping around with different manatees count? Oh yeah -- IIRC, bestiality is still legal in Florida, and after significant debate a year or so ago, your state legislature (recogizing what is important to its citizens) decided against criminalizing it. Clearly, we all choose to live where we do (and to participate in our chosen recreational activities) for different reasons.

Friggin Floridian checking in about why most of us ride!

Too bad it ain't Friday, yet. :p ;)

All good points. Glad YOU could contribute. NOW this thread is validated as the DUMBEST THREAD EVER! ! :p

I guess I must be a really big poseur then because I ride purely for enjoyment. Seldom just for transportation, though that does happen indirectly, but mostly for the fun of it.

I don't consider myself a "rider" or a "motorcyclist" though. Just another shlub that gets enjoyment from riding around on a motorcycle.

If you really do think that it is no different than driving somewhere in a car, well then I feel bad (for you) that you are unable to appreciate the difference.

FWIW - I know for a fact that it is quite possible to get enjoyment from your bike and also from your spouse (or SO). Hopefully the enjoyment comes in very different ways.

"Too bad it ain't Friday, yet."

I dunno, Don. Howie didn't even put up a fight before conceding. Sad, really -- not only would he prefer riding a Segway to a Feejer now, but he's apparently not been "riding" any manatees lately. I feel kinda bad for contributing to the obvious holiday malaise. Usually he's good for a good comeback, a clever insult, or at least some irascible comments where it takes a good dogpile to put him down, but an instant submission?!? :(

Okay, gurlz, I guess I'm gonna have to 'splain things to ya...

To me, riding a motorcycle is done for transportation.....to work, to play, to where-the-hell-ever. I get enjoyment from riding the bike. More so than I do from driving my car. So, in that fashion, I DO ride for enjoyment.

BUT, when I need to get somewhere, and it's pouring-*** rain when I leave, or freezing-*** cold, or down-to-the-ground foggy, I leave the bike parked and take the car, because there's nothing enjoyable about riding in the rain, cold or fog. So I'll give it to you -- I ride the bike for enjoyment...but it's completely dependent on the conditions of the "ride". The trip is the thing, NOT whether I'm on the bike or in the car. But depending upon the conditions determines what I choose to make the trip in or on.

I'm also an exceedingly cheap sumbitch. That's why I ride Darkside. That's why I ride a motorcycle 99% of the time, even though my Honda Del Sol gets just as good gas mileage as my bikes. I'll still choose the bike over the car whenever I can, because I like riding more than I do driving.

I guess the biggest problem I have with this thread is the premise of concept OF the thread -- "Are you a Biker, or a Rider". There is NO way you can condense the world of motorcycling down to just two finite points. And the idea of labelling simply pisses me off. I'm a Biker AND a Rider...and a two-wheeler...and a touring rider...and a sportbike rider...and an economy rider...and a hooligan...and an old fart on two wheels...and the list goes on-and-on.

STILL RANKING #1 AS DUMBEST THREAD EVER!

RadioHowie: STILL RANKING #1 AS ******* EVER!
Fixed it for you. You're welcome.
Grandma Howie taught me to never be unkind to ******** folk, so you're safe, Dumbo.
Hey Howie, knock it the Hell off; stop calling my Kid Dumbo, damn it!

I like motorcylist more than biker personally but I respect anyone who is a rider....one who will ride great distances in adverse conditions because they want to. On the gnarliest mornings you'll see those riders, not a lot of them, but interestingly diverse. Beemers, sportbikes, and yes some legit dudes on Harley's. Not my personal choice but I gotta respect anyone who's a rider.

So jbeezee, are you saying that you would not have a problem if "Good Queen Bess" came riding up next to you on a Hondapotamus Lead Wing Sperm Whale?

Even on a Dog Pile Friday: You are a Better Man than I, Gunga Din! jes' sayin' and nuff' said!

Sport Touring guys are almost all going to say "Motorcyclist".

Harley Davidson and most cruiser riders are going to say "Biker".

It is what it is. I've ridden both cruisers and ST and am very familiar with both sides of the fence. A motorcycle is an extension of your personality just like your clothing and your hairstyle, it says a lot about who you are and what your interests are.

Dual Sport riders are even more pure motorcyclist than ST riders IMO. They don't give a damn about how "cool" their bike doesn't look. The muddier, dirtier and more miles they have on it the better. To them it's about the journey not the destination.
