Hi All,

I noticed when I give my FJR a quick throttle blip, I get some not so good, kinda of a knock like, sound from under the gas tank. I can twist it up and it revs up smooth, it's just the quick blip when done real quick that I get that knock sound, and it seems to resonate through the frame and bars.

Any commentary about it? I do not think it is a problem, but I'm just curious about the phenomenon.

You are probably opening the throttle to the 'wide open' position in a very small fraction of a second. So, on the very next intake stroke you have zero vacuum, causing instant engine knock. Your ears are not deceiving you, your engine is knocking. If you were to do the same thing at the same RPM in a relatively high gear(so the engine cannot quickly rev), your engine would continue to knock, long enough for you to recognize it. It sounds REALLY angry. Like when I do it by accident I apologize to Silver immediately.

So the ultra short, no explanation is:

Yes, it is. Stop the 'blipping', you're NOT on a Hardley. Worry less, ride more.

(I started mine first hotrod)

What's a Harley? OK, I was doing it to help prevent the 1st gear clunck - like just once before hitting the shifter. Thanks.

In the interests of clarity:

I usually 'blip' the throttle during downshifts. By 'blip', I mean a very minor, 'micro' twist of the throttle. I've always done this, and it always seems to facilitate smooth downshifts. It doesn't result in engined knock, and has become such a habit that I would be forced to concentrate not to blip.

There's no need to 'blip' the throttle with an fjr, or likely any FI engine, in neutral. This practice may have had some practical value waaaay back in the early days of motorcycling.

With modern bikes, blipping at the stoplight is no more than posing.

Increasing revs to pull away from that stoplight enthusiastically is a whole other thing...

It's not a Harley. Stop doing that.
This ^^^^ ...and the noise you're hearing is completely "FJR" normal.

Rider,

Check that the warm idle RPM is 1100~1200 RPM. A too-slow idle can make this happen, or make it worse than it should be.

As mentioned earlier, roll on the throttle more gradually, also.

Cheers,

WILD GUESS: roll the dice................ TBS is what you need.

Just kidding, but a TBS might be of some help.

Maybe, but I was direct and to the point without all that other fluff you added. Well call it a tie!! :)

Speaking of blipping the throttle, someone posted a comment that blipping just before dropping into 1st gear prevented that bothersome clunk. I tried it and it made no difference, same old clunk. I also tried pumping the clutch several times prior to dropping into 1st and that did not seem to make much difference. My idle is at 1100RPM's. I now down shift into 1st while still moving and stay there at stop lights.

Just curious, does that clunk damage the gears over time?

I usually blip the throttle before shifting into 1st as well. It has always prevented the clunk into 1st because it loosens the clutch pack. I did this on the 08 too, and noticed the noise in the engine if I got too enthusiastic with the blip. On the 14 with the fly by wire throttle, I can blip the throttle as fast as I want with no funny engine noise, but on the cabled throttles the noise is normal.

OK, I actually can understand that. It breaks the clutch plates loose prior to dropping it into 1st. once they are loose, wait 1/2 a second and you avoid the clunk. 'Blip' a little slower and the knock will stop.

No idea about the warning point. Though it could be the thred should have been in either 'technical discussions' or 'mechanical problems'. Just a guess. I really don't know.

Oh, and run EVERYTHING posted by Dcarver through a real high end BS detector before, well, before anything.

Happy riding.

What I believe you are experiencing/hearing is the delay and then very rapid opening of the butterflies by the electric throttle-by-wire motor. Mine does it too but not if I roll on a little more gently. Didn't do it on my 07, the Gen IIs are direct action by the cable on the butterfly. And if I recall, it only does it in Sport mode not Touring since the T mode is slightly slower responding.

OK, somehow I got a warning and a point for my two posts here. I have no idea why?
Nope. Look closer. You got OLD warning points removed because they expired. Unrelated to anything posted "here" other than time (since the events that lead to the original warning) passing.

You can see your warning points at any time. If you go from 2 to 0 (zero) that is not "getting a warning and a point" (or even 2).

You should ask this stuff in PMs.
