I had the perfect route planned, then I went to bed. Then I woke up and re-planned the whole thing to be even more perfect. For once I'm not completely confused at the start of a rally..this plan looks pretty solid. Ig and Hal, see you guys on the road!

Matt, Geo had me thinking about yanking the plug on my star-traxx too, butt my wife would kill me. I figure, if someone has to copy me, it's their problem. I'm not checking your SPOTs or having my friends read me your blog while underway. It's my rally to sink or swim with. Why ride someone else's coat tails?

Ride safely, brothers.

Have a great ride Jerry, I'll see you in Tulsa on Friday. I'll want to hear all the gory details.

All you SPANK dudes have hit the road and I wish I was there with you...

Good luck, good ride, and remember your pledge.

Just got a phone call from Iggy on the road...... he's in Rawlings, WY, heading for SoCal, then a swing by Vegas.

He has a dinner date in both places over the next 24-36 hours.

These "dinner dates" are with some current FJRForum members..... :D

Sure 'nuff he is. And so is Kaitsdad (Hal). Hal looks to be a few minutes ahead of Iggy.

Good luck to both.

Iggy's an animal. Will someone tell him to get some sleep?

Signing off from Twin Falls, Idaho, this is Kaitsdad, getting Spanked. Heading for bonus .... ahhh..... whatever.
Watching both of you guys progress. Keep on truckin and do it safely. I'll catch up with you after I start Spank 2 tonight, somewhere TBD tonight at 2200PDT!

Sorry to hear of your transmission troubles Jerry. At least you're safe and can still make the National Meet.

For those that don't know it yet, Jerry's tranny (the one that was making noises early in the rally) gave out last night somewhere near Battle Mountain, NV. He's doing okay and is maintaining a great attitude in the face of adversity. Keep on keeping on Jerry!

Beerme came out from Elko, NV to lend a hand.

Way to go Brad! :clapping:

Just now catching up on this thread. Yes, Brad and Reno John were both incredibly great helpers during my breakdown. They took great care of me. Watch for my writeup of how it went down, and how these two guys became my Nevada FJR heroes.

To hell with the heros!

What we wanna know is if you are gonna stop drinking the kool-aid, punt that BMW, and git yourself a real bike - an FJR!

Sorry to hear of your troubles during such a big event.

Yep - and Jerry wasn't the only kool-aider that got bit. Two other BMW's lost rear drives.

What a bummer for those folks. So, is anyone keeping track of these failures (for entertainment purposes)? I seem to recall that the '07 IBR had around 5 or 6, the '07 SPANK Rally had one (I think)...how's 'bout the Cal24 or the 1088? Anyone recall?

I'm pretty sure the Cal was free of BMW mechanical DNFs. But the WORD! claimed the Sperry's final drive.

Last night here in Tulsa was a get together for all the 09 IBR entries. Everyone introduced themselves, and it was rather surreal the number of people who stood up and said, "Hi, I'm Bob Smith from Texas, riding a 04 RT on its second final drive." I mean, half of the riders are on BMWs, and half of them have already gone through at least one FD. And they're STILL riding the BMWs in the Butt.

He said as he stood up and claimed a bike that's currently in the shop with a rally-ending driveline failure.

Just call me Mr. Cognitive Dissonance.

IIRC there were 4 or 5 BMW final drive failures that happened before the 1088 this year to riders that were signed up to participate.

The poor dumb bastards. Intervention time?

Looks like Jerry only lost the driveshaft, but would any sane person risk a mechanical DNF in the IBR when all they had to do was ride a different bike to avoid it??

Anyone know the penalty for switching bikes in Spank this year? GZ, ya out there?

Dude, love the new avatar.
So, did you buy that yellow FJR? If not, WHY?!?!?!
Mainly because Todd hasn't returned any of my messages. I assume he must have sold it to someone else.

Did I mention that someone diagnosed an impending FD failure on Mark Crane's GS right here in the damn parking lot? Yes it's true. Fortunately he won't become a statistic because he's replacing now before it fails. But there's no way he would have made it back to California on it.

Damn. Crane's FD going south? What the hell? That kool-aid must be some good stuff.
;)
Funny thing is that he had his drive identified just BEFORE it failed and AFTER the rally was over. Crane did 8700 miles, but could have DNF'ed he had 8800 miles to cover. I saw them moving it in the parking lot and there was like 3/8" play when they grabbed the wheel and twisted it.

It made me sick to my stomach and I don't even ride one.

I really feel for these guys.....a great bike with such an obvious problem. We have it good I think.

You mean 3/8" laterally, side to side, cross-wise to forward travel?
