One of those connectors from McMaster Carr or the ones suggested by Patriot above ought to help. And if the hole in the cowling is too small, maybe one of these:

I'd recommend drilling them out and epoxying in some 1/4" all-thread that you can buy anywhere like Lowes...
I once did something very similar on my '71 FJ40 side mirrors with JB Weld.
Can you get some metric all-thread?

A lot harder to get, thats why I suggested steel rods then a die after. Of course you could just cut the heads off longer metric bolts and use those instead. Cut some notches into the shank to give the epoxy someplace to adhere to.

I must have better hardware stores up here in OR. Metric thread all is right next to the SAE thread all. Even at the Farm Supply places.

MM2 confirmed

I took a hacksaw to an old mirror base when Joe was working on his mirror spacers. IIRC, the head is shaped like a rivet ("T") with splines on the shank and it's molded into the mirror base. Ir will not simply screw out.
Sounds like a typical injection molding process. Lots of work to get the studs out, but you could then epoxy longer studs in w/o too many issues. Just make sure they stay strait while the epoxy cures.

You must have way better hardware stores. Getting anything metric around here is like pulling hens teeth. So you could always be nice and mail Don a nice length of metric all thread rod. I'm sure he'd be happy to repay ya B)

I have 6mm std pitch sitting in the garage. How much ya need Don? PM me with a shipping addy.

edit: Actually, thread all isn't as hard as longer studs would be. If he's going to all the trouble to remove the stock studs, I'd say it would be better to epoxy in new studs, or be really trick and epoxy in some coupling nuts and use longer bolts instead.

OK, it's Sunday, where's the pics? :D

I just finished a major Soltek install using the Unmentionable One's brackets so I'm real interested in this problem. However, my mirror stalks are pretty long, there is more than 1/8 inch of threads sticking out beyond the nuts after I installed the brackets. I've seen a lot of comments about them being too short but mine were fine. I wonder if the length of the studs are different between years or production runs? (I''ve got a 2006 too).

Update! Update!

Is Brodie around? He's got an '06 AE. Ever had the mirrors off?

FWIW, all you need are some longer M6 bolts - cut the heads off them and epoxy the unthreaded end into the mirror stalk. I recommend using a hack saw or grinder to roughen up the unthreaded section first...

Subframe is at the welding shop. Ivan has cut a piece of aluminum to triangulate the ear the mirror mounts to. I don't think it's feasible to remove the studs from the mirror, from what I've heard they are a T shape. Easier to simply weld a small extension on to the existing stud. Chamfer the edges, TIG it, done deal. I found some extensions at the local hardware store.

Regarding the stud length? My studs must be shorter than the rest of you well endowed studly FJR owners. I have just enough length to catch a couple of threads, no excess at all.

I'll post pix up tonight if I have time..

I hear yah Bob, first they claim there was no Ducati, now my sub frame ain't broke. What next? I overdose on Viagra? Guess I'll have to prove them wrong when I can. :****:

As promised, broken sub frame pix.

Note the 'ear' that the mirror mounts to - no triangulation or reinforcements
