I've mentioned it on previous rides, now the day has arrived...

After 3+ years of investigation, a bitter divorce where weight was one issue and a lot of years of trying on my own, I'm heading in Monday morning for bariatric "Lap Band" surgery where my new stomach will be reduced to about an ounce in capacity. This is not a decision made lightly or as a fad quick-fix. I want to live and better enjoy that life, both for myself and for my baby girl. Hey, let's be honest, being skinnier helps performance behind closed doors too ;)

I'm probably done riding for a while as I adjust to the procedure and just plain heal up. They're going to try laproscopic at first, but may have to resort to old fashioned avenues (not the first time my gut has been opened up, so no biggie either way). I'll be at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla Monday and Tuesday at least.

I'll never be a skinny superhealthy John Dumke type of dude, but that's not my goal anyway. I was 195 in my Army Infantry days, so I was always a big-framed dude, but I've been slightly more than twice that at my worst, and the insanity has to end. I'm a little spooked as the time gets closer, which is probably partly the reason for this post to those of you I call friend, and also somewhat absorbing the realization of what ends (no more big ole comforting chow-downs!)

So, catch you all on the other side.

p.s. I'll ask the doc to avoid the temptation of installing any extra farkles while he's in there ;)

I'm cheering for you RayBan! I know several folks who've had the same surgery and they are much happier years later. Adjustments must be made, but I know you already know that; you're a fart smeller, errr, I mean smart feller, and have done your research.

Heal up quick then let's ride!

Lighten up, Ray! Yeah man. Good for you! Hope you have a speedy recovery. Keep us posted.

Consider it as an extra 20hp for your bike too.

good luck, and a good choice...

a friend had the same surgery... they are a month post op... going for the first adjustment... they found it helpful to have friends cook for them the first week or so... in their case, it was clear fluid for the first few days... i'd cook for you, but i'm in fla...

any fjr cali cooks out there?

help a forum member... good karma...

Life is full of tough choices. It sounds like you've made one so you'll have a future...and a good one for yourself and your daughter. You'll be a better person after the recovery. I hope its a speedy one.

Er...uhm...Campbells Soup & Progresso are your friends! ;) And NO cookies or candy.... :glare:

My father in law had the same surgery last year this time. He is doing really well...now. He didn't follow the doc's orders as strict as he should have in the first few months and got himself into some trouble. All is good now and his quality of life is ten times what it was. Follow the doc's orders and get well soon.

Good luck!

Thanks to you all. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the horsepower boost :)
Not to mention a suspension upgrade....

Rayban deserves some good karma his way. Not long ago he GAVE me an Electrosport stator from the group buy. :clapping:

By the time I get a chance to buy him a meal & beverage, he'll probably weigh less than me....

Ray, best to you and remember, the first time you here the doctor say "oops", he's probably just joking. ;) You'll be in the prayers man. Take care and heal up quick, we still need to meet up and ride together. B)

Time to check out Lap Band foum

GOOD LUCK. Don't try to get as skinny as Dumkey, he doesn't belong on an FJR anyways. FJR riders are meant to carry a few extra lbs!
