Love this shot! :clapping:
Everyone should have "Whitebird Grade" on their bucket list.

The last time I rode 95 North-to-South the old highway was closed (and I was rightfully disappointed).

Seriously, if you are ever in that area it is a MUST RIDE.

Ty & Donna, the photos and narrative are great.

I'm glad Mike told you guys about the "other" views of Glacier. exskibum, Nightshine and I came from the North (from Waterton, as a matter of fact) so we rode that leg first and then went into the main park.

It is breathtaking!

Now....when are we going to get the "rest of the story"?

The descent down to the eastern entrance brought welcomed sunshine!!

Donna,

Looking at your Bandit gives us great memories of the many miles we put on ours before we sadly sold it to get the FJR. We've met far too many wonderful peeps because of the FJR though :) One of the better purchases we made.

Still a great RR .. looking forward to more of it.

Funny thing, when I was in the motel parking lot in Castlegar looking at the Bandito among all the FJR, I was thinking quietly to myself, that they seemed very similar. I believe the Bandit may weigh a bit less, and of course it's faster  :p , but otherwise it's a very similar design.

I attended an event in Castlegar last year and was stunned to find mixed in all the Euro trash (bmw, ducati, moto guzzi to name a few) were 4 Bandits...I don't believe I have ever seen that many Bandits all together! Now, I just have to ask...if you were happy with the Bandit, what moved you to the FJR??

We found ourselves doing more and more touring, and I was getting tired of slinging soft luggage around. Deb had a small back rest to which I attached T-Bags, which rested on the small Bandit ('98 Bandit 1200 S) luggage rack. Worked OK ... till the rack started bending! We just needed more room to pack, and more securely. Enter the FJR in 2002. PDP in February, sold the Bandit the same month, then waited, waited, waited ...................... well worth the wait :)

Now ...... back to your RR :)

Yes, dear. :)

Ok, let's see... where were we? Oh yeah... CANADA!!! I have to say that Canada has cornered the market on the color green. The scenery is lush and stunning. I spent the next couple of days taking in deep breaths as I viewed the amazing landscapes splayed out in front of me. After crossing the border, we headed for Elkford to stay with some friends of Donna's, Dave and Liz. They welcomed us into their home and provided a delicious home cooked meal (very much appreciated after being on the road for almost a week!) and much chit chat and laughter. We were having such a good time, we took no photos so you'll just have to use your imagination!

The next morning, we geared up and headed out to meet a couple more friends of Donna's, Jim and Geoff. All three of these guys were such gentlemen and great riders. It was an honor to share some (s)miles with them! Dave guided us to the first treat of the day, a road very aptly named cause I was grinning the whole way!

We then traversed 3A which runs alongside the Kootenay River which is 485 miles long along the Canadian Rockies so there were stunning lakeviews the entire time... didn't stop to take many photos as we were having way too much fun on the lovely sweeping road.

Waiting for the ferry to take us across to get to Castlegar...

DSC9804ed-XL.jpg

Donna tried on Jim's Norge for size... methinks it looks pretty good on her!

DSC9806ed-XL.jpg

The ferry started unloading all the vehicles and, to our surprise, the last one off was a fully loaded logging truck!

DSC9809ed-XL.jpg

On the ride across, a family was checking out the Spyder and asked if their daughter could try it on for size...

DSC9811ed-XL.jpg

How d'ya start this thing anyway??

DSC9815ed-XL.jpg

Jim and Dave chilling on the top deck...

DSC9818ed-XL.jpg

DSC9821ed-XL.jpg

After debarking from the ferry, we then headed through Kaslo and finally into Castlegar. We made it!! We got all our stuff settled into the hotel and then were the guests of Jim and his family for another home cooked meal (he lives in Castlegar). Again, having too much of a good time visiting so no photos!

The next morning we had scheduled a ride to Ainsworth Hot Springs for a soak. We left under cloudy skies but no rain. The route was along 3A through New Denver to Kaslo and finally the hot springs.

DSC9829ed-XL.jpg

The facility features a hot springs that is built into underground caves in the hillside. As you go farther back into the caves, the water gets warmer and warmer but it was never too hot. There was a cold dip that not many were brave enough to sample. Most of us sat in the outdoor pool and just relaxed, taking in the views and reveling in seeing friends again.

DSC9826ed-XL.jpg

I had lunch with a few folks and when I came out, the group I came with had already departed. I had enjoyed the ride over so much and had to skip taking any photos due to our timeline, I decided I would retrace my steps, take a few photos, and just drink it all in. I enjoy riding with friends but there are those times when a solo jaunt is really refreshing - stop when you want, where you want, how you want. A few visuals of my journey...

DSC9840ed-X2.jpg

Tons of wildflowers blooming everywhere...

DSC9850ed-X2.jpg

The appropriately named Mirror Lake... I just sat here for awhile and enjoyed the moment...

DSC9872ed-X2.jpg

The inhabitants of Mirror Lake... watch your step on the lawn cause there was poop everywhere!

DSC9864ed-XL.jpg

Snow-capped mountains, a river running alongside a wonderfully paved and fabulous sweeper of a road... not sure it could get any better than this.

DSC9882ed-X2.jpg

Okay maybe it could... add in a few rushing waterfalls for your viewing pleasure...

DSC9885ed-X2.jpg

DSC9887ed-X2.jpg

My new buddy, Larry the Lizard... he was enjoying the day too!

DSC9890ed-XL.jpg

I met up with one of the FJR gents, Don, and we shared a spirited run back to Castlegar... I've finally found my "groove" on the Spyder and it was a blast to slide side to side on the seat on turn after turn after turn... just a different kind of fun.

Saturday was a day off the bike and it turned out to be a very good choice for the day as it rained... no wait, it POURED for most of the day... guess that's why it's so lush and green!

DSC9903ed-XL.jpg

I took a short video with my camera... Barb had come in her car and we were very happy to allow her to shuttle us across the street for lunch!

The Dollar Store across the street got some business from a few...

DSC9907ed-XL.jpg

The restaurant across the street was called The Black Rooster. I could probably come up with another name for it... :D

DSC9899ed-XL.jpg

Saturday evening was the event dinner complete with a wonderful dinner, raffle prizes, an auction to raise money for a local charity (one of the things I really like about attending these FJR events is they always do some good for others)...

DSC9915ed-XL.jpg

And a fully manned (or should I say WOmanned) bar. Donna, my Canadian sister-from-another-mother, Barb, and I had all volunteered to play bar wenches for the evening. I have such good friends... always ready to lend a hand...

IMG_3622.1.jpg

We got a ride back to the hotel where we were staying and noticed that even the interior of the truck was having a good time...

DSC9923ed-XL.jpg

And with that, sated and smiling from sharing a fabulous evening with some really great folks, we headed off to get some rest as we would be hitting the road again in the morning... I'm really glad I went to the gathering and many thanks to all who worked so hard to make it a great event!

DSC9925ed-XL.jpg

Coming next... back in the US, back in the US, back in the USofA!!

On our way to Elkford, BC.

IMG_3560.1.jpg

This was to be my third trip to the Nelson area, the first being in 2007 when I made my epic solo journey covering seven states and two provinces. I had only been riding for three years and was excited to take such a long and adventerous journey. I had a forum friend from MCusa and basically invited myself to visit him and his wife while I was there. This is my friend, Geoff, and I would see him on this journey as well., but sadly his wife Laura, way traveling in China! I'm always amazed by the friendships we acquire while celebrating this sport we all love!

Why I keep returning to the Nelson area!

IMG_3553.1.jpg

This year I was also visiting my new riding buddies that I had met on last years journey to the north country, with my riding buddy, Notorian. When Tyler suggested this trip, I was thrilled at the prospect of seeing friends once again and with that we added Elkford to our itinerary. My friend Dave and his wife Liz live there and we spend a rollicking evening in their home visiting them and friends. After a couple of glasses of well-needed vino we retired to be fresh for a morning ride to Castlegar.

The beauty of meeting locals is that they ALWAYS know of the fun roads. Our ride into Castlegar was rife with fun side roads and along the way we picked up Jim and Geoff and it made for a great group.

I could follow this Ducati every day!

IMG_3569.1.jpg

We met up with Jim in Fernie, I believe it was called.

I tried it on for size and it fit perfectly! ;) Go figure...

My touring buddies...always the clowns.

IMG_3578.1.jpg

IMG_3580.1.jpg

As we neared Castlegar our party thinned. I notice Jim had dropped off and after talking to him later it was due to a car nearly t-boning him at a light. I was enough riders ahead to not even notice for which I felt terrible. I was releived his quick wits kept him from being hit! Geoff dropped off at Cresent Valley and Dave led us into our motel in Castlegar before he himself split off.

What a wonderful day of riding with friends!

IMG_3587.1.jpg

The rest of the evening was spent getting settled in at the FJR NAFO. I met so many people I remember but a few. The following day group rides were planned, but I, being me, left early to ride the roads solo.

My favorite ride or I should say one of them is the ride from Castlegar to New Denver then over the pass to Kaslo. It's a beautiful road, very scenic and fun on a motorcycle. I hear it can be full of other riders, but I have yet to encounter but a few single riders on it, unless I was simply traveling too fast to notice. ;) . It's one of those roads that will bite you if you are lax in regard to some of the corners. It's not like Hwy 4 Ebbetts Pass in CA but has a bit of that feel to it. Now Ebbetts, that's a story of its own!

I like to stop in New Denver for coffee.

IMG_3589.1.jpg

This day like so many others on this trip was overcast making a decent photo nearly impossible. This was one of those days, I was wishing I had a better camera.

IMG_3591.1.jpg

IMG_3592.1.jpg

My favorite roads are those that follow rivers!!

IMG_3600.1.jpg

The Lupin all along the roadside was unbelievably lovely!

IMG_3607.1.jpg

My ol' Bandit looks pretty pleased framed by nature's offering.

IMG_3611.1.jpg

When I arrived at Ainsworth Hot Springs, the destination for the day, I encountered another Suzuki rider. This lad had a damned fine ol' Suzuki. I believe he told me it was a '78. He had it solidly packed with camping gear and other items and was embarking on a several day journey. He lived in Creston and was just out and about. He was very nice and we ended up conversing from the comfort of the soaking pools of Ainsworth. We were but two in a sea of FJR riders!

IMG_3613.1.jpg

My friend Geoff joined just as I was getting ready to depart. He decided to ride his 250 dual sport and teased me about being able to keep up with him. You have to realize Geoff's skills to know it wouldn't matter what I rode, I'd not keep up.

IMG_3614.1.jpg

It was a wonderfully brisk ride back to Castlegar and the evenings festivities, a banquet for the FJR riders.

I didn't need to count sheep at all...

DSC9295ed-XL.jpg

Been there done her.. Well before she needed to be shaved twice yearly..

And her name??

Why of course Ethel

I must admit her gentile murmurings at night are missed.

Nice report Ty and Donna,, can't wait to see the fly in September 15th.

The next morning our mostly good luck with rain was over and it was raining pretty good out. We pulled the bikes under the covered hotel entrance and huddled under it along with several other riders loading up their bikes and trying to avoid getting drenched before they even hit the road! Then it was time to layer up in the undergear followed by the cold weather gear followed by the rain gear... I looked at Donna with our multiple-layered-I-can't-put-my-arms-down-attire and said,"Long distance touring is not for the vain." And with that, out we went into the great northwet (and no, I didn't misspell that!).

We only had to endure about 30 minutes of rain and as we descended out of the mountains, the weather started to get a little better and warmer.

Lake Christina

DSC9929ed-X2.jpg

We passed through customs and were back in the US lickedy-split... state number four for this trip...

DSC9939ed-XL.jpg

We stopped in the town of Republic for lunch and both of us swore we took some photos but I guess all we did was think about it! As we pulled out of town, I did see this one sign that caught my attention for some reason... ;)

DSC9941ed-XL.jpg

Onward for Leavenworth, WA, our day's destination. We rode along 97 which isn't a real challenging road but it runs along the Columbia River for some gorgeous views!

DSC9947ed-X2.jpg

The clouds lifted, the sun shone down upon us, and the temperature started to climb so we took the opportunity to pull off at a rest stop to take off some layers... it was right near a dam and it had one of the big rotors to check out up close... Donna exhibiting her mad posing skills!

DSC9949ed-X2.jpg

Leavenworth is a quaint town that reimaged itself into a Bavarian look-alike type town to attract skiiers in the winter and sightseers the rest of the year... and me forgetting my leiderhosen!

The first thing we did was go to church to repent for our moto sins... okay, not really but there was a cool looking cross way high up in the sky that caught our eye...

I loved the reflection of the clouds on this store front...

DSC9997ed-XL.jpg

We also had some other treats in store for us in the way of family and friends... I met up with my biological father, who lives in Blaine, WA...

DSC9958ed-XL.jpg

As well as a dear SBR forum friend, Bill, who lives in Edmonds...

DSC9956ed-XL.jpg

And Donna got to visit with her brother, Bruce, and nephew, Michael...

DSC9960ed-XL.jpg

Bruce rode his bike there to meet us with Michael as pillion... I always think it's cool when parents are able to share their love of riding with their kids and the kids enjoy it! We had dinner at the restaurant of our hotel which was really good and had lots of fun getting caught up with everyone! The sun set and we hugged our loved ones good night... sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

DSC9978ed-XL.jpg

What's up next? Portland, OR!! Stay tuned...

I awoke early on Castlegar departure morning to look out side and see that torrents of rain had taken over the outer world. The ground had rivers running across it and I knew this was definitely going to be a test of my FirstGear riding suit. I have no rain gear per se but the Kilimanjaro jacket and my pants were both supposed to be rain proof. Well, I guess I'll be finding that out!

As we loaded the bikes, everyone seemed in fair spirits, regardless of the weather. It was a fun time, and now it was time to head home and everyone was ready to deal with whatever was out there! There was lots of laughter and good cheer, pack patting and hugging. What a wonderful event.

Tyler is really good about gassing up at night, but me, not so much. So off to the Shell station in the pouring rain. I have to mention, that I had forgotten to call my bank and let them know I was out of the country, so my debit and credit card were blocked. Luckily I had some cash so this was not a problem, but it did take a phone call from Canada to sort it out. Note to self: don't forget to call the bank when touring!

Several miles out of Castlegar, the rain finally began to lighten up. The first miles were horrid, with cloud cover falling low over the horizon and lots and lots of rain, but the silver lining was I was warm and dry in my FirstGear suit with my heated liner cranking away. I swear, I would not be able to ride if it wasn't for my Gerbing. I am such a weather wimp!

Christina Lake was finally where the rain stopped.

IMG_3627.1.jpg

IMG_3629.1.jpg

We proceeded across the border effortlessly at the Danville crossing. I was ever so glad to be back home, even though I had a wonderful time seeing friends and flawless country. There is just an unexplained feeling when you once again cross back into your own country, even with those darned clouds!

IMG_3631.1.jpg

The river along Hwy 21 in Washington.

IMG_3636.1.jpg

A little valley before we switched to Hwy 20 and stopped in Republic for lunch.

IMG_3638.1.jpg

Funny thing, we met some of the FJR riders in Repbulic. Of course we did!

IMG_3639.1.jpg

The rest of our journey that day was skirting rain storms. It seemed to be the theme of the ride, but I have to admit, some of the cloud formations were truly something.

IMG_3643.1.2.jpg

IMG_3649.1.jpg

IMG_3652.1.jpg

As pretty as the Hwy 97/2 were the traffic was becoming unbearable. The closer we got to Leavenworth, the destination for the day, the less patient I was becoming. It's not good, but still pretty.

IMG_3655.1.jpg

I was thrilled to arrive in Leavenworth and have my brother there awaiting our arrival. Look at all that stuff that came off our bikes!! It's amazing since I think I take so little!

IMG_3658.1.jpg

My brother Bruce and his son Michael with their beautiful new Triumph!

IMG_3659.1.jpg

Our plan was to leave Leavenworth after breakfast and good byes and ride the back side of Mt. St. Helen's, but like usually the best laid plan can often go awry when motorcycling.

I saw this on Hwy 97 before we got to Selah. It's not a great shot by any means, but it cracked me up. My favorite is always antique fruit!

IMG_3663.1.jpg

Hwy 12 was a lovely ride only it did have lots of log trucks!

IMG_3673.1.jpg

Hwy 12 was well worth the diversion as we were about to find out.

IMG_3677.1.jpg

Forest Service Road 25 was closed due to mudslides. Grrrrr, I was again not to visit Mt. St. Helens or riding the road I have heard so much about. *sigh*

IMG_3679.1.jpg

Now doesn't that look like a good little road??

map.jpg

The rest of our ride into Portland was a bit mundane to say the least. After careful map perusing and speaking to the locals, we discovered there was nothing else open between Randel and Portland except the freeway. Oh goodie!!

In Longview we decided this was in order so that we could possibly miss some of the 5 o'clock traffic of the Portland/Vancouver area.

DSC0048ed-X2.jpg

We weren't spared the PDX traffic even at 6:30. It took a bit of patience for me, since I adore lane splitting in bumper to bumper traffic. I desired throwing caution to the wind, but realized I'd probably have some serious explaining to do, to say nothing of scaring drivers! I arrived at my mom's home around 7:15 to a cold Martini!

Totally dismayed at the lack of nudity @ NAFO........ I suppose I best make it right in September ;)
Gee, maybe you need to think about attending STURGIS! :p

Tyler - The most Excellent RR and photos ever!!! :yahoo:

I felt like I was almost there. Thanks for sharing. ;)
Thanks for following along! :D

Our luck held for clear weather and off we went headed for Portland... Donna's mom lives there and my college buddy, Liane, lives neaby in Lake Oswego... we would have a couple of days off the bike to visit and relax and not have to pack the bike every morning! It was a beautiful morning for a ride...

DSC0019ed-XL.jpg

Donna's GPS wouldn't work so we went for the fallback paper GPS...

DSC0023ed-XL.jpg

Stopping to contact our GPS customer support (aka Gary, Donna's hubby!), we pulled into this parking lot...

DSC0026ed-XL.jpg

Ya think?

DSC0027ed-XL.jpg

A hitchhiker had joined me at Ainsworth Hot Springs courtesy of some FJR pranksters... Charlie the Rubber Chicken... no bike is complete without it!

DSC0032ed-XL.jpg

Yeah, I know... a picture of a bunch of rocks... wtf? If only I could add a sound bite to it as there were hundreds of crickets chirping merrily away in the sunshine...

DSC0029ed-XL.jpg

We road along Hwy 12, which snakes through the Snoqualmie Natl. Forest... lovely road and lots of snow covered mountain tops along the way.

IMG_3677.1.jpg

Our original plan was to take NF-25 which goes around the back side of Mt. St. Helens. We looked down the road and saw ominous clouds so stopped to put on the rain gear again...

DSC0034ed-XL.jpg

Unfortunately, those plans did not come to fruition... snow, mudslides, and bridge construction resulted in this...

DSC0044ed-XL.jpg

I asked this guy if there was anyway we might get around the road... he said, "NAY!!!"

DSC0038ed-XL.jpg

So Plan B was put into effect... which unfortunately meant hitting the slab into Portland. As we got closer, we decided to pull off in Longview to hopefully avoid some of the rush hour traffic in Portland and practice our mad poser skills...

DSC0048ed-XL.jpg

It was here, as I checked FB and my daughter had posted a message about Michael Jackson's passing (my accident was on the same day as his and Farah Fawcett's deaths... my sister said that when I showed up at the pearly gates - or other venue - they said, oh no... that's one too many... you go back! lol), I realized that it was the 3-year anniversary of my accident... I called it my survival anniversary and a friend corrected me and said it was my Life Anniversary... I like it! I could think of no better place to be than on the road, sharing the adventure with a great comrade, seeing friends, visiting new places, and just enjoying the moment! B)
