Great pics and report!
Danke, sir! :)

Continuing on...

My friend, Liane, has a beautiful home in Lake Oswego. On Tuesday morning, while she was taxiing her daughter to summer camp, I wandered around the garden, soaking in the sunshine and having a cup of coffee to start the day.

One of Liane's golden retrievers, Stella, kept me company...

DSC0096ed-XL.jpg

We went to lunch and I called shotgun to run errands... the Portland are is a very artistic community and has some sort of artwork on almost every corner... this one caught my eye as I've always thought children tend to be closer to a higher power given they are still a clean slate and most often not affected by life's foibles... I try to channel my inner child every chance I get!

DSC0068ed-XL.jpg

That evening after dinner, I wandered outside to take a gander at the sunset show that was going on in the skies... the rain clouds from earlier that day were a great canvas for the setting sun's colors to reflect upon...

Moon was at half mast...

DSC0094ed-XL.jpg

The next day was sightseeing at the Portland Museum of Art and the rose gardens. I took a ton of photos but won't bore you with too many here. If interested, my entire photo gallery is here so feel free to peruse at your leisure.

One of my favorite pieces is by an artist named Dale Chihuly who does amazing glass creations. If you've ever been to the Bellagio in Vegas and walked through the registration lobby, you've seen some of his work there too. This one looked like a big Christmas tree...

DSC0149ed-XL.jpg

DSC0138ed-XL.jpg

There was a wonderous Native American exhibit with all kinds of pieces from different tribes... the detail in these pieces was amazing...

DSC0166ed-XL.jpg

DSC0170ed-XL.jpg

I tried to capture the lighting on these paintings but couldn't quite get the golden glimmer that was evident in them... they were calming and beautiful... I could imagine being right in the middle of those places...

DSC0177ed-XL.jpg

DSC0182ed-XL.jpg

DSC0195ed-XL.jpg

Even loved the forethought of what colors to paint the walls of the invidual sections...

DSC0212ed-XL.jpg

And this painting, "Nature's Fan, 1881" by William-Adophe Bouguereau, was simply astounding... I had to do a double take as I thought it was a photograph...

DSC0215ed-XL.jpg

I spent a couple of hours just wandering around and looking at all the really beautiful, and sometimes very unique, art... had the place almost all to myself!

DSC0113ed-XL.jpg

I feel like this one some days...

DSC0140ed-XL.jpg

Then we went to visit the rose gardens... the fragrance of all these roses was heavenly!

DSC0246ed-XL.jpg

DSC0264ed-XL.jpg

DSC0261ed-XL.jpg

Mt. Hood

DSC0293ed-XL.jpg

Then it was off to dinner to meet Donna's family (son, sister, mom)...

DSC0295ed-XL.jpg

And another SBR forum friend, Roger, who moved up to Portland a couple of years ago and his lovely lady friend, Alenia, with Liane on on the other side of me...

DSC0296ed-XL.jpg

Donna and her family headed home but Roger, Alenia, Liane and I decided to check out a place nearby which purportedly had the "BEST" pie in Portland if not the world... eat your heart out, Niehart!!!

DSC0298ed-XL.jpg

DSC0301ed-XL.jpg

And with that, it was back to Liane's house so I could do some pre-packing in readiness to hit the road yet again the next morning... it was truly a highlight to see some of my dearest friends and share time which, I believe, is our greatest gift that we can give one another.

Coming soon... the final chapter back to Calfornia!!

Clear skies greeted us the next morning as we bid adieu to our family and friends and hit the road once again. We wiggled our way southeast toward the coast. Along the way, we came across this covered bridge. I don't know why I like these so much... maybe a remanant of simpler times?

DSC0310ed-XL.jpg

Farmhouse across the road... looks peaceful, don't it?

DSC0311ed-XL.jpg

Still tons of wildflowers along the road...

DSC0323ed-XL.jpg

On the advice of a few folks, we took 253 out to the coast. It had a couple of really fun twisty sections but lots of straights in between them... we enjoyed the twisty part and then the views on the straighter sections...

Once we got out to the coast, it was cloudy again and started to rain... sigh. So we pulled over to gear up again and get Donna warm again! Conveniently, there was an art gallery as we went through Gardiner so we popped in and visited with the owner, Mack, who very much enjoyed having some company on a gloomy day. If you're ever in the area, be sure to stop in and say hi and check out some of the wonderful art he's procured and even created himself...

Back out along the coast, I was disappointed that the sun did not have its hat on this day... another moody day along the ocean...

DSC0362ed-XL.jpg

DSC0364ed-XL.jpg

Coming into Gold Beach, our destination for the day...

DSC0372ed-XL.jpg

Donna wasted no time with a little something warm her up before we even unloaded our gear into the hotel room!

DSC0375ed-XL.jpg

Our room at the Beachcomber Inn sported a fireplace heater that quickly warmed up our room to the point that we had to open the window to cool it back down a bit!

DSC0387ed-XL.jpg

These guys always remind me of "Finding Nemo"... Mine... mine... MINE!!

DSC0417ed-XL.jpg

We again decided to order in from a local restaurant that delivered to our hotel...

DSC0393ed-XL.jpg

The award-winning "Cabbage Patch" soup was absolutely delicious and Donna enjoyed hers from the comfort of her down-quilted bed...

DSC0395ed-XL.jpg

Even though it was a cloudy day, Mother Nature still managed to put on a different kind of show for sunset...

DSC0385ed-X2.jpg

DSC0401ed-X2.jpg

DSC0410ed-X2.jpg

We gaggled and googled and emailed and Skyped and then hit the hay... we both agreed that these were probably the comfiest beds we had slept in so far... we left the sliding glass door open a bit so we could hear the sound of the ocean as we drifted off to sleep...

The next morning we discussed our plan for the day. It went something like this:

D: What do you want to do?

T: I dunno... what do you want to do?

D: What's this squiggly line here (looking at map)?

T: NF1 aka Titlow Hill Rd.

D: I've never ridden that.

T: You haven't?? Shall we?

D: We shall.

And off we went!

More views along the coast as we headed south...

DSC0418ed-X2.jpg

DSC0426ed-X2.jpg

Ta da!

DSC0428ed-XL.jpg

Until finally...

DSC0429ed-XL.jpg

And a brief tourist stop along the way...

DSC0433ed-XL.jpg

Oh no you didn't!! Oh yes we did!!! :D

DSC0434ed-XL.jpg

Stopped in Blue Lake to gas up and get some lunch then 299 to Titlow Hill Rd. which is an amazing road but, even though it's "only" 54 miles, it should be savored and enjoyed with the views and incredible scenery. Also, beware of the pot holes in the middle top section... some are marked with paint, some aren't... some are clearly visible, some are in the middle of a blind turn... some are small, some could do some serious damage to a bike should they run over/into them... it's easily maneuverable on 2-wheels but you do need to be on your guard. Oh, and the sand/fine gravel in a few turns makes it just that much more exciting... but the views make it all worthwhile!

When we first started up, I was a little concerned as this was our view...

DSC0439ed-X2.jpg

But as we tallied forth, the fog dissapated, the clouds lifted, and we had sunny skies to enjoy the journey...

DSC0446ed-XL.jpg

DSC0447ed-XL.jpg

Donna rounded this corner (where I was laying in wait with camera ready) and all I could hear other than her engine was her voice, "Oh my god... this is beautiful... WOW!!!"

DSC0456ed-XL.jpg

Buddy bikes...

DSC0465ed-X2.jpg

At the top, it's deeply wooded (and where most of the pothole-dodging happens)...

DSC0470ed-XL.jpg

We stopped to smell the roses... or wildflowers as it was...

DSC0478ed-XL.jpg

DSC0480ed-XL.jpg

We seemed to continue to climb forever and finally we were on top of the world, Ma!

DSC0488ed-X2.jpg

DSC0492ed-X2.jpg

As we all know, what goes up must come down... and down we came a staggering 4400 feet in less than 4 miles! The other end of Titlow Hill hooks up to this one... the legendary, the infamous, the stupendous... oh yeah... that one!!!

DSC0496ed-XL.jpg

Not a lot of photos as we were "in the groove" and just having too much fun... it's that kind of road and after a slower pace on the goat roads, we were ready to let the ponies run...

DSC0500ed-XL.jpg

A quick stop at the Wildwood store for some gas and to chat with the owners, Andrew and his brother Joseph, both riders themselves and very knowledgeable about the roads in the area, both paved and dirt... if you're out that way, be sure to stop in and say hi!

DSC0502ed-XL.jpg

The helmet tree out in front of the store... luckily, these were not remnants of any accidents!

DSC0503ed-XL.jpg

As we descended toward Red Bluff, the temperature continued to climb and it was getting hot! I was kind of zoning when Donna spied a cluster of turkeys (the birds, not the people) right off the side of the road... she braked and I spaced but luckily came back to earth in time to avoid any up close and personal moments with Donna or said turkeys! I was wide awake after that!!

We were really looking forward to getting to our cute little motel, The Sky Terrace Motel, and once unloaded, made quick use of the pool there!

DSC0506ed-XL.jpg

Nearest restaurant was a 1/2-mile away and we were in no mood to walk that far in the heat... but wait... what's that right across the street?? Works for us!!

DSC0507ed-XL.jpg

We enjoyed our topping-covered pizza bread with what we had left of our adult beverages and climbed into our cozy single beds which at that point didn't matter what we were sleeping in case we were stick-a-fork-in-me-done!

The next morning, I went out to start loading up and found Donna's leopard-print silk leggings hanging off her bike (no picture so use your vivid imaginations!)... she had left them out to dry the night before and no one took them!

We shared a last hug and smile... I so enjoyed traveling with you, Donna... we don't get the chance to venture out together much so the past two weeks had been a real treat! Then it was time to bite the bullet and slab it home. Down I5, I waved to my comrade as I took 505 toward 80... just after I got onto that part of the freeway, Mother Nature had one more visual treat for me as payment for enduring all that concrete...

DSC0518ed-X2.jpg

I arrived home with no incidents and was greeted by my beloved daughter who kept me company in the garage as I unloaded all my stuff...

DSC0519ed-XL.jpg

Added another few (s)miles to the odometer, both the bike's and mine, making for about 10K miles in the past 10 months. The only thing I have left to figure out is... where to next!!!

DSC0521ed-XL.jpg

Thanks to everyone who made this trip possible... friends, family, angel doctors and nurses, organizers... so many spirits that I carry with me every time I hit the road and enjoy the amazing adventure we call life... I am truly one helluva blessed woman!!

FIN

I was truly enamored in the entire report. The photography is wonderful - inspirational even. I caught myself reading with my chin on my hands, my elbows on my desk - like a child listening to one of Grandpa's stories from the "old country". I couldn't wait to read what happened next...

I'm obsessed with riding Northwest. You both have my envy beyond words.

Thank you for taking the time to share your vacation with us.

Donna - a close friend from Atlanta crashed his 1250s (same color and luggage as yours) on Sunday riding a wet road in the North Carolina Smokies. ATGATT saved him from any serious injury, but the bike is totaled. His next bike will be something with ABS - mine too. I hear he is looking at a GEN I FJR with ABS in Tampa - good choice if you ask me...

I am so sorry to hear about your friend but I am thrilled he escaped any serious injury. I feel I have been very fortunate with my Bandito. I tend to ride it like I stole it, in all sorts of weather, but thus far (knock on wood) have been fine. It's an awesome bike. The one thing i would add if able would be ABS. I totally agree. My other bike is a 650 Versys without ABS too. I gotta stop getting bikes without ABS.

Oh ya, and thanks so much for your kind comments on our RR. Tyler and I had a BLAST!! :)

What a damn fine ride report! :clapping: :clapping:
