I bought a used '04 FJR from a dealer in the Los Angeles area last Spring.

The bike was represented as having 27,000 miles, and the odometer read 27,010 when I picked up the bike.

Ive ridden the bike probably a half dozen times since then, not really paying attention to the odometer.

Until recently, when I noticed that the odometer read 45,000 miles!

Is there a logical explanation for this?

I did call the prior owner when I bought the bike, and when I mentioned the mileage at 27,010, he said no. But I didnt pursue that beacause I already had the bike, was back in Arizona, and it could only be unpleasant to pursue it. But I noted that there might be some form of issue with the mileage.

Is it possible that the dealer, who sold the bike on consignment, could have rolled back the odometer reading, and that after a period of time, that it would revert to the true mileage?

Hee, hee. First the good news -- the only way to reset the odometer is to replace the entire meter assembly. And now, the better news -- look close, the odometer is now reading in km and not miles. Click on THIS LINK, then you can read the owners manual and see how to change the settings.

Edit: I see Ross types faster than I do and supplied the answer one entire minute before I did.

Welcome aboard Jerry0. We're glad to have ya. And congratulations. You win the dumb question of the day award. However, since you are kinda new around here, and even know it is Friday, we'll let this one go, just this once. Now... the only way to get them kinda miles on yer FJR is to ride it. A lot. So get out there and get busy.

Enjoy yer weekend.

I wouldn't call it a dumb question...I know of countless FJR owners that have asked that question before. So if yer a new FJR owner, yer eventually gonna hit that miles to kms switch without knowing that you did it...and wondering what the heck went wrong.

As a teacher, you know the only dumb question is the one not asked.

I recall a thread or two where someone's bike wouldn't fire and eventually they discovered the kill switch was thumbed...We all have moments. I spent 5 minutes once trying to start a rental car with a push-button start switch (my first experience with that feature). Steering wheel was blocking the dash display that was telling me to put my foot on the brake before starting. I didn't notice that and was just about to call one of the lot attendants over to find out what the hell was wrong with the car!

Wow, things are getting tame around here. What ever happened to Dogpile Friday? No offense to Jerry O, but this thread should have lit up like a Christmas Tree!

I think you were just ahead of your time in preparation for when the United States starts using the metric system.
Welcome, Jerry O! Glad you got that issue sorted out, and relatively painlessly.

Now if we could just get this country to adopt the metric system. But I fear that won't happen any time soon. Can you imagine what would happen to the diet industry if folks stepped on the scale and saw that they weighed only 60% of what they weighed yesterday?

Where would it stop?

"Give them 2.54cm and they'll take 1500km."
