Good friend of my rides a '99? Blackbird. I've ridden it a couple of times. Smooth power delivery, very long legs on the straights. His has Heli-bars and a Corbin seat, but is still a way more aggressive riding position than the FJR. He has a full Givi mono case rack and boxes for it for touring. Not bad for a Honda...

Have ridden a Blackbird ('06 and '07 models) several times.

Excellent power delivery, very smooth. Long legs, sports riding position. Very good handling, sure footed. But from the Rear Seat Counter Weight: "The pillion seat is uncomfortable Dad, can we jump back on the FJ or the FJR?"

It was a serious contender when I was looking at the FJR.

It's a great bike for general solo riding. It may need some minor farkles to make it comfortable for long distance work (seat, Heli's, Throttlemeister, Givi touring screen, peg lowering brackets ) and can readily handle luggage. I prefer it for road carving and blasting around. It is a smooth, refined, classy, yet very exciting bike to ride (did I say that already? ). Quite a few forum members have both an FJR and an XX.

Dale has the right idea! :aarock:

I agree with Toynut on all points -- it's a great bike. I've had 2 -- a carbureted '97, which I sold after I'd replaced it with a FI '03. Extremely smooth engine that is bulletproof, and while not as fast as a Busa or ZX-14, it is damn close. Besides, it wasn't whooped with the ugly stick that took after those two. More aggressive, sport riding position than the FJR, but rideable for much longer distances than a true sport bike. Very much fun for one up carving twisties, esp. with aftermarket suspension. For a solo ride through the mountains, I'm more likely to take the Bird, but it's the FJR for two up. To explain that "chill":

Warchild (moderator here and Group Buy Satan) documented 7 straight 1500 mile days on his '02* this last July. 'Nuff said.

*Which replaced his '00 XX that he'd done countless IBR and other LD rides and events on.

I had 2 XX's. A 97 in which I put on 72,000 miles and sold at 83,000 miles. Still going strong at over 131,000 miles. Motor's never been opened.

I had an 02 in which I put on 10,000 miles and sold at 20,000 miles. Still running around NYC area with about 28,000 miles.

Both XX's had ZG w/s, throttlemeister, Corbin seat, Givi trunk and wingrack.

I sold them because I was sick of chain maintenance. I was averaging 18,000 miles a year.

I like the FJR as it has a similar power to weight ratio on the XX and shaft drive. I do miss the XX because it was so smoooooooooottthhhhh!

So, yes, the Blackbird is a great bike!

:)

I have a 02, I bought new. I love the bike. All the power I can use, smooth. I put a complete aftermarket exhaust, and a power comander on it and got 14 more HP out of it, not that it really needed it. Not a two person bike, but that is what my 07 FJR is for.

We currently own two and I had a third one back in 01, till I killed it in a crash,

it's a great bike, has plenty of power, very smooth, can't hardly tell the engine is running while cruising, it's that smooth, pretty much bullet proof with the exceptions of Cam chains, some folks have had problems with them, and also electrical problems on earlier models, We've never had a single problem with the three XX's we owned, it's a pretty layed out bike, meaning it's a reach to the bars, and a pretty tall seat, I also owned a Hayabusa and found it to be much more comfortable due to it's more compact ergos, later models 2000 and up are Fuel injected, 03 is the last model year imported to the states,

Depends on what your looking for, it's no liter bike, it's not made for racing through the canyons, it's more like a FJR without bags , a more cramped seating position and a messy chain added( Chains suck!!) , it makes a great sport tourer with a few changes, like a better seat, the factory seat is horrible, and taller bars, either Heli's or 02 and up VFR bars, good luck finding them the secretes out,

the negatives, the seat is terrible, it's a hibachi in the summer, the tank and frame rails get very hot to touch or rest your goods on if ya know what I mean, not too bad when moving, but if your stuck in traffic, it will roast you like most Hondas, I sold my Hayabusa and kept my Blackbird just because every one owns a Hayabusa, Blackbirds are pretty rare, but I actually prefer riding the Hayabusa, it got alot better fuel mileage too, more TQ, more comfortable for me, my son also owns a 01 Euro spec Blue XX, he says he will never get rid of it, but he is thinking of getting a ST1300 or an FJR1300

this sight might help you.

Very nice collection of bikes you have there Brian

Anyone have one of these that can tell me an honest opinion?
Endeavor to find a EFI version.... 1999 and later.

They are okay bikes, I suppose..... though I seem to get tired after riding one.....
