I've been wanting to make a cheesesteak run from the Albany, NY area for a long time. Any interest from others here? I'm thinking Pat's or Gino's or both???

Mmmmmm. I used to get the best cheese steak from a place that cooked in an old railroad car in Passaic, NJ next to the bridge to Wallington. I don't know if they're still there and I probably wouldn't enjoy all that grease these days, but they were good.

Anyway, where is Pat's or Gino's? You talking about scooting down to Phildelphia for the day?

As a Philly native, Gino's all the way. The place is spotless and you can eat off the floors. Joey Vento is a clean freak.

I was born and raised within 30 miles of Philly. If ya wanna get a cheesesteak from Pats or Gino's go ahead. IMHO, sadly, they've become tourist traps. Food is ok but I've had better. There are some awesome cheesesteak shop in northern Delaware and my favorite was always Capriottis. They have expanded west and have some shops in the Vegas area but damned if that still aint 9 hours away. I had my Dad overnight ship me about 40 Lbs of frozen chip steak so I could make my own at home. Now that I'm outta that meat, I'm considering buying a home meat slicer so I can slice my own steaks. Might end up being a cheaper way to go. That last shipment, the frieght cost just a few dollars more then the meat did.

Either way you go, don't matter to me, but if you're gonna eat cheesesteaks, have one for me. Provolone, fried onions, and just a touch of ketchup. Oh! And take pictures! If I can't eat a cheesesteak, at least I can drool over one!

If I had to pick between Pat's or Gino's I would go with Gino's for reasons mentioned above. My favorite CS is Johnny's at Snyder Ave at the RR tracks just off of Columbus Blvd. (Delaware Ave.).

Count me in.

I always welcome the opportunity to **** my pants all the way back to Jersey. ;)

And...if you're heading this way you'll go right past my house. I can meet on the NJ Tpk.

I WOULD LOVE to go to PA for an authentic cheese steak - count me in... just let us know when and where to meet... FJR Jon...I am about 1 hour south of Albany already...

I would be up for this also

Depending on my work schedule, since involves weekends

I like Jim's on South Street and haven't found a reason to try any other in Philly.

My new trick is to get the meat/cheese/onions and bun packaged to go (meat, etc in one container and the buns in another). Pat, Gino and Jim wouldn't do it so while I had lunch at Jim's, I went to Marmora NJ to a placed called Kirk's Pizza and they packaged it all up nicely.

I am always nervous on the ride home because I am pretty damned sure that interstate transportation of cheesesteaks is a felony. But you only live once right? And yes you can reheat them to perfection.

And you will be close to Atlantic City and you can go and play craps and get lucky and pay for the whole trip.

Funny to run across this right now. I watched a show on the Food Network this last week all about these two places, so I read this thread. Same conclusion here as there: each place has its own devoted fans. Personally, I'd like to try one of each (but the Cheeze-Whiz part seems kind of, uh, wrong).

LETS GO NOW!!! -Only joking of course, but I am hungry right now and happen to remember this thread about cheese steaks, mmmmm they can be sooo goooood!!!

It does until you taste it. Now any cheesesteak without wiz is not right. An hour north of Philly where I live they try to put marinara sauce on them. It's an aberration I tell ya.
