From what I read on ADV Rider and other sources it seems that unfortunately the individual in this story was the author of his own misfortune. He went out of his way to find areas that he was warned about in search of "adventure" and got involved with some very dangerous folks.

+1, Gunny; yamafitter is right on regarding Harry Devert, got info from Friends in Mexico regarding HD seeking out the Cartels! Didn't use his head!

A. Witnesses in restaurants and stores in Guerrero reported he was carrying a map with him and asking the locals for directions to the cartel areas.

B. He was offered and was pressured to join a military convoy traversing Michoacan Estado, but refused the request stating he wanted "adventures!"

C. It's an incredible tragedy that Devert lost his life and I feel so sad for his Mom Ann and his Many Friends, but you must be aware when you travel!

The #1 rule of adventure is to survive the adventure.

Certainly a tragedy. :-/

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...
AJ I was following Harry Devert's Blog and I was getting very concerned the more I read, everything he said told me he was going to get in to trouble South of the Border. When his disappearance was announced we MOA had some fellow Club Members riding their BMW's in the region on the way to Panama. They had left us an Itinerary with lodgings they could possibly be at en route, we made contact with them and they were all A-OK!

Here is what I wrote over 13 months ago on our AZ Beemers Forum, our Crew heard a rumor that when Harry Devert reached la Union he asked if anyone knew "El Tigre" and if they could take him to meet him! This would be the equivalent of being in Boston and asking somebody to take you to Whitey Bulger or being in New York City and asking to be led to John Gotti or in Chicago asking for Alfonso Capone! HD was asking for big trouble!

The Bottom Line folks is that if you are looking for trouble, you are going to find trouble. I don't care if it is South Phoenix or South America: If you're asking for it:
'Devert's friends and family remain hopeful that his disappearance is only temporary, another story to recount from his wild travels around the world -- from Pamplona, Spain, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and beyond.'

"I've been chased with a gun in Colombia, chipped my tooth on a gun that was shoved in my mouth in Venezuela and shot everything from a bazooka to a machine gun, an M16 to a Colt .45," Devert wrote in his travel blog, A New Yorker Travels. "I've been in some of the poorest and some of the most dangerous parts of the world and to many of the finest, and I still can't tell which I liked more. I think that life is a pilgrimage."

His own friends and family pointed out he went searching for "wild" adventures, plus he brags boldly about getting into encounters with the armed and dangerous.

I feel sorry for Harry Devert and all that loved him, but as Jim Croce said: "You don't step on Superman's cape or spit into the wind!" He was repeatedly and constantly warned about that route that he purposely chose through Michoacan! I have repeatedly ridden Michoacan, he could have taken the Coast Route!

"May be it's more being naive. He may have thought everyone has good in them. It can be a deadly mistake. Not sure I'd compare Mexico with the US in terms of crime or the possibility of being a victim of one. There are different cultures are work here and different results. That said, if you don't know what you are doing, don't do it."

No Jim, he was REPEATEDLY warned to NOT go anywhere near la Union! So what's the first thing he did when he entered Michoacan? Went to la Union! Estupido!
