I'm curious to know how many riders use their clutch during upshifting...downshifting?

I haven't used mine during upshifts w my 2010 FJR, or since purchasing my FJ1200 in 1986.

Anyone???

Yes. I use my clutch for upshift/downshift 100% of the time. Always have. I don't do much trail braking technique and I prefer to downshift and engine brake in higher RPM's as much as possible to set up my correct comfortable speed entering a corner when riding the twisties and stay off my brakes as much as possible. Using the clutch makes it a smoother transition to me.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of posts of riders swearing by the "no clutch" shifting though. Too each his own. There is no right or wrong answer. Just whatever each rider is comfortable with, practiced, been taught or read about.

Depends on where I am and what speed. Slow speeds around town I use the clutch quite a bit. Upshifting out on the open road or freeway not so much.

Multiple choice for this nePrt thread:

a- I've removed the clutch handle in it's entirety with a CNC fabricated stub to make it look factory. Clutches are pointless, archaic, throw off the CG, aerodynamics, and limit the top speed of the bike.

b- Most of the time, but not every single time. I find posting questions about it on forums to be somewhat OCD.

c- Every single time....period! I have a special log prepared and notarized periodically for every time I use the clutch. 147,212 times since I've owned the bike..... just to make sure it's official.

But Iggy has all the right answers posted...cuz that is the range of answers you will soon find posted on this thread.

I use mine downshifting to match engine RPM by blipping the throttle - clutch engaged, and in traffic most times.

Rarely downshift without it, will upshift without it if I'm hoofing it, but just around town I'll clutch the upshift, too.

I always use the clutch because I always thought you HAD to use the clutch. Aren't you damaging the gearbox if you don't use the clutch?

There's no faster, smoother shift than a perfect clutchless upshift on a sequential box.

You must have mistaken my post for "a" when really it was an attempt at humor. "d" is more appropriate:

d- I let the 'puter figure out when to use the clutch. My left hand is busy doing other things.

Can't believe you got this many answers to this question...

Maybe it just goes to show that we've got WAAAYYY too much time on our hands ??

Using the clutch. Years ago, just for fun, I'd peddle myself forward on my little Honda 50 until I was going fast enough to dump it into first, just to be able to say to my buddies that I could take off without the clutch. But then again, we were 13 years old...

So since we're all in the mindset, ever try downshifting without the clutch from fifth to neutral and bring her to a stop without touching the clutch?

Good grief, did I just say that? Glad it's almost Friday.

Was going to say I do it all the time and never touch a lever, but that would just be silly.

All these AE guys claiming they don't use the clutch.

LIARS, ALL OF THEM!!!!!

They may not have a lever, but they use the clutch more than any of the rest of us. They don't have a choice!
