Last June, I started out on a journey to Wyoming that took an unexpected detour. On July 1, 2010, I boarded a plane to complete that journey and witness the spectacle that is Wyoming!

You see the most interesting people at the airport… I wondered what a fuss he must have made at the security checkpoint!

My flight arrived late afternoon and Dorothy was there to greet me at the Cody airport (which is quite an experience unto itself!). I saw her and couldn’t hold back the tears upon seeing her face and knowing I finally made it!

Dorothy lives in Powell, WY, a fairly small town where everyone knows your name. The neighbors were agog at all the motorcycles parked outside the Church of Booker T. (named as such since her home used to be a church and it now stands as a testament to her beloved canine, Booker) and of course had to take a stroll down that way to see what it was all about. We met assorted family members and family friends and immediately felt welcome and a part of the town.

When I first got to Dorothy’s house, I kept hearing sirens and thought this town sure had a lot going on! Turns out it was the local fire department going door to door to raise funds for their upcoming 4th of July fireworks extravaganza. The firemen came to everyone’s door with a boot where folks would drop their donations.

“Hey Andy, what are you doing?”

“Texting you, Scott.”

926103246_8wRqc-L.jpg

Hey what’s that racket? Oooooo, the Wyoming marching band is practicing their marching drills up and down the streets of Powell for the weekend’s parade… let’s go catch ‘em!

Hooligans in the back of the truck…

The boys began what would become their official handshake in testosterone solidarity…

First night’s dinner…

926107391_psVVD-L.jpg

On Friday, Geoff brushed off his pillion seat and allowed my seat to sit on it for a jaunt up Beartooth Pass… he is an impeccably smooth and talented rider and I really enjoyed riding “piggyback” with him for the day.

It is amazing how the terrain changes along the way… from almost desert-like landscapes to lush green farmlands to the exhilaration of the high mountains… what a trip!

926118584_kmwL4-L.jpg

We rolled through Red Lodge, MT and this would be the only moose sighting we would have…

926114912_GcwCt-L.jpg

Then it was up and over the roller coaster that is Beartooth Pass… lots and lots of these signs back to back…

926122532_RmQWg-XL.jpg

926122966_SiPQk-L.jpg

Looking down from where we came… can you see the road snaking through the trees??

926126279_4SWun-L.jpg

Then up, up, up to what’s referred to as “The Top of the World” and I could see why they called it that… dozens of blue-watered alpine lakes nestled into the landscape, snow capped mountain tops, and long sweepers on brand new pavement…

Look Ma, I’m on top of the world!!

926135156_9ntpw-L.jpg

The store owners obviously have a sense of humor… this sign was affixed to the front door!

926136799_uVDzh-L.jpg

Da boyz were commenting on a couple of Gold Wings they saw along the way that had stuffed animals on them… they seemed to feel left out so I got them each a suitable traveling companion to watch over them on the way…

926139119_yqffk-L.jpg

926138631_bitL6-L.jpg

Even the top of the world needs some beauty work done… at least to the roads anyway! A couple of miles of hard pack dirt and a few additional patches thrown in for good measure kept things exciting!

On the way into Cooke City for lunch…

And lunch at the Beartooth Café…

926145672_RSvhD-L.jpg

None of us were brave enough to try this… something about a whole lot of garlic…

926146036_uRWo5-L.jpg

Da goilz relaxing while waiting for lunch…

Aweosme Tyler!!! You made it! :yahoo:

Great looking country you got shots of, now I need to get out there.

More pix of food would be nice too. :D

Thanks for sharing with us. ;)

Hang tight sweetums... more to come! B)

And then it was on our way to Chief Joseph Highway… the rivers and streams were overflowing with run off from the snow melt making for some spectacular waterfalls… if you look closely, you can see the water about 2/3 up in the photo as it continues down toward us…

926149566_aGPdC-L.jpg

I love the fencing out this way… miles and miles of crisscross logs lining the roads…

926149978_qLq5d-L.jpg

926150487_zGULs-L.jpg

We stopped before the really twisty part to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, and friendship at this bridge along the way… totally flaked on getting the name of it but I’m sure someone will remember it! Don’t know if these pics capture it but we were very high over the deep gorge below us…

926156452_evNNB-L.jpg

933914647_dHn6r-XL.jpg

933914711_eaAd3-XL.jpg

Marles in a pensive moment…

926163632_gqf7y-L.jpg

Scott and Sue had the unenviable task last year of following me to the hospital after my accident and having to make the calls to my family… I was so grateful to be able to share some much more joyous moments with them as it was originally meant to be!

926164152_ckYfE-L.jpg

Can you see those smiles?

926164606_Xa3wS-L.jpg

The view from the top of Chief Joseph Highway (aka Dead Indian Pass)… the picture does no justice to the absolute grandeur and majesty of the land or the “wheeeeee” factor of the road!

933914522_uCSpg-XL.jpg

I couldn’t help but pause for a moment knowing the history of this land… it made me kind of sad and I felt a momentary sorrow of the events that transpired…

926167465_HXLqQ-L.jpg

926167995_AEZYv-L.jpg

Getting on and off the bike proved to be exhausting by the time we reached the summit of the pass… I asked Geoff if he could just bungee me to the seat…

926168928_kCWdK-L.jpg

I think Dorothy’s smile beamed right through that helmet of hers…

926169832_BG4Vr-L.jpg

And away we go, down, down, down to lower ground, giving merry chase to Dorothy as she swayed right and left in what I term “the dance” of 2-wheels…

926171335_vFQuG-L.jpg

926171755_ybLh5-L.jpg

926173584_NRvd6-L.jpg

926174287_MPibX-L.jpg

And finally back down to the flatlands…

926176285_WqjkT-L.jpg

Dorothy doesn’t have a t.v. at her place so Geoff took to watching the washing machine instead…

926176561_Xcjhv-L.jpg

And then he took to the streets with garden hose and suds bucket in hand, washing down everyone’s trusty steeds from the adventure’s grime thus far… he had an audience too! Unfortunately, no wet t-shirt contests…

926178973_pkvwM-L.jpg

Laura rode in just in time to miss getting Kiki washed down…

926179769_hNTpb-L.jpg

But just in time to relax while da boyz fixed da goilz some grub…

926180151_MVZa8-L.jpg

Boyz in da kitchen, girlz relaxing with a beer… life is good!

926180910_7goki-L.jpg

I think Laura is going to have this thing implanted into her head soon…

926181903_Dv8nY-L.jpg

Scott had something in his eye…

926182299_n4TEj-L.jpg

The next day was a visit to downtown Cody to witness the 4th of July parade/spectacle. There is nothing like a small town parade and everyone should experience it at least once in their lives! There were all kinds of entries and almost everything you could imagine and then some… and cowboys… yuhMEE!!

We brought some folding chairs and got a space right up close to all the action… our group at rapt attention of the festivities…

926193464_eiRtj-L.jpg

926192592_Jygsb-L.jpg

Skiers out of season… we wondered it they would clear the overhead wires!

926195368_Pt7Hc-L.jpg

The Pink Lady and her companion… supposedly this gal was 74 years old and, if true, she could put the rest of us to shame… she looked great and was trotting the whole way down the street… in heels!!

926196396_a4vGa-L.jpg

Saucy saloon girls…

926202673_ksZ2S-L.jpg

And did I mention cowboys? :D

926186452_CYqu8-L.jpg

926189638_faDZU-L.jpg

I’ll take a number 22 value meal, please…

926195035_xdRjJ-L.jpg

And the lucky gent who got clean up after all the horses…

926200918_ti3XT-L.jpg

And finally, the Wyoming state marching band decked out in all their red-white-and-blue glory came down the street in fine form…

Oh but wait... there's MORE! :D

Kool pics T, that is some purty land out there....... good ending too...
B

And with that, the town resumed it’s regularly scheduled programming so we decided to do a little sightseeing around town and get some lunch.

926206627_nGZpx-L.jpg

Marles enjoying the day…

This mannequin was kinda scary…

926208239_hJ2xq-L.jpg

Afterward, a few of us decided to pay our respects at the memorial site for the Heart Mountain Relocation Center outside of Cody. It was a bit of a sobering visit and the land had a cloud of sadness hanging over it. Most of the buildings have been removed but there were still a few left, boarded up and left behind as a reminder of a not really proud time in our history.

926213051_jGUXJ-L.jpg

926213412_pjzYT-L.jpg

926216271_q4CGG-L.jpg

We also noticed that the memorial stone honoring the Japanese Americans who fought for our country in WWII had no flag flying. ☹

926220681_r4zqj-L.jpg

Then back to the homestead for another yummy dinner (just for you, Simon)!

926221367_T5GEn-L.jpg

And then a group of us headed out to experience the Cody rodeo… the sun was setting and the fields were glowing…

926223143_vQfVX-L.jpg

926223869_BW2Bm-L.jpg

As dusk fell, the sky turned an amazing shade of blue…

926228924_REuRH-L.jpg

And then we were treated to a spectacular sunset, peachy-orange color reflecting off the bottom of the clouds…

926226586_Yd8Qu-L-1.jpg

I was too far away from the action to get any in-focus shots of the events but you can kind of get the idea… we really enjoyed the banter of the announcer (“Well, I tell you what!” became our mantra for the rest of the trip!), the rodeo clowns, and the half time entertainment – a cowboy with a British accent who did some pretty amazing rope tricks – and on a unicycle no less!

926224196_B5PUP-L.jpg

We did a little shopping…

935020415_XmXqB-L.jpg

But we didn’t need the rope to find us a cowboy… and a Marine to boot!

926229218_nXNfF-L-1.jpg

Again, a return to Powell for a little sleep… the next morning, Dorothy’s nephew, Dylan, came over for a visit and a ride on the back of Geoff’s bike – his first street ride! Aunt Dorothy made sure he was all ready for the ride…

926229878_a8JLo-L.jpg

Let’s make sure that helmet is on nice and tight…

926230861_sVSeh-L.jpg

And away they gooooo!

926231230_g3T34-L.jpg

926231671_kmaXA-L.jpg

When asked how it was, Dylan replied “Way cool” with a BIG grin on his face!

Tyler absolutely beautiful country! It was so green, and I'm sure it was far better in person than the pix, but it looked great to me.

You didn't put your foot in your mouth did you? :dribble:

Thanks for the dinner shot, looked real good Pesto and Linguini with sausage?

Some observations:

1) Washing bikes is silliness.

2) Small towns are awesome.

3) Small town parades are a hoot, and bring everyone together.

4) I think this is Bust and his new jail bait sheep, "Lilly"

926196396_a4vGa-L.jpg

You had some great fun there, you deserve it. ;)

More pix! I'll come back tomorrow when you're done. :p

While some of the others who had missed it the first time decided to hit Chief Joseph Highway, Dorothy’s co-worker, Trudy, and her hubby, Chris, and I ventured out to entertain our photography bugs. It was great spending the day with kindred photo spirits and we stopped anywhere there was something of interest.

Fields of harvested alfalfa in large rolls dotted the landscape…

926231945_FvGiV-L.jpg

Each roll was close to 6’ tall…

926233402_GDtNh-L.jpg

Another view of Heart Mountain

926235129_a4naq-L.jpg

A stop in the little town of Bearcreek (pronounced by locals as Bearcrick)… interesting old buildings amongst new growth by a few folks who decided to get away from it all…

The old garage…

926241694_LFHJc-L.jpg

An abandoned glove finds new purpose…

926241051_tBRBM-L.jpg

This gent lived across the street from the garage and said that glove was the biggest addition to the town ever… seems it catches a lot of attention and we didn’t disappoint!

926243719_kZSR5-L.jpg

The general store has seen better days…

926246611_TcyFt-L.jpg

926246966_E6f4r-L.jpg

I was bummed that we would not be in town for the 7 p.m. show!

926245131_BGrdX-L.jpg

I did peek through the fence though… looks like they’re pretty dang serious about their pig racing!

926245825_2PFg7-L.jpg

And then a stop at the Hungry Bear Café to pick up a couple of pies for the 4th of July bbq we’d be attending later in the day… including one of their “world famous” banana cream pies!

926243938_Ccrsz-L.jpg

The friendly ladies who run the joint got all giggly when I asked if I could take their picture for George, who had frequented the place on one of his other trips…

926244200_tyTF7-L.jpg

926244487_9AbRo-L.jpg

We stopped just up the road at the abandoned Smith Mine where 74 miners died in a mining accident in 1943.

926247535_6FfMa-L.jpg

926248431_aTQhq-L.jpg

Crikey! Look what we found in the brush out there… the not so elusive California tourist! Isn’t she a beauty!!

926250286_H8sWE-L.jpg

And then a stop at the top of the hill to soak in the view… the wind seemed to blow right into me with the energy of the land…

926262025_9xTyb-L.jpg

935020451_3eqCM-L-1.jpg

And then a trip into Red Lodge, MT to people watch!

All dressed up with somewhere to go…

926255016_qfyZi-L.jpg

We ran into this gentleman and his grandson, Trevor, in his pristine classic car…

926257857_iqize-L.jpg

He and Chris chatted for awhile and then the rest of the family showed up… four generations of ladies – great grandma, grandma, daughter, and granddaughter who was all dressed up in her 4th of July best.

926258111_oBa7F-L.jpg

Lots of cool things to look at…

926256110_xXcE2-L.jpg

926255876_Q4JQx-L.jpg

926258881_qYdPF-L.jpg

The only buffalo we saw…

926256439_5RmcS-L.jpg

Then we had to skedaddle back to the homestead for the 4th of July bbq… but this view made us stop in our tracks…

926261511_udswv-L-1.jpg

And then of course the obligatory tourist shots… one side of the road…

926263901_kjspB-L.jpg

Why did the tourists cross the road? To get to the other state!

926264510_LRJGa-L-1.jpg

And with that, we were back in Powell to share some great food, meet some more of Dorothy’s family, make homemade ice cream, and laugh… a lot!

Love the shirt!

926267584_QxB6L-L.jpg

926271156_4BYGH-L.jpg

Our hosts, Don and Martha… these folks know how to throw a party!

926270892_5SQGK-L.jpg

And how to welcome their guests accordingly! Lol

926272672_YRsKU-L.jpg

And of course, the sparkler tradition lives on…

926273295_roCUe-L.jpg

926272987_xeLfY-L.jpg

Chris’ iPad came in handy for kiddie entertainment…

926274735_snvZP-L.jpg

Wish you could’ve heard this conversation about a chocolatier cowboy with a really cute butt… LOL

926275259_JxjvL-L.jpg

Real does his moose impression for the crowd…

926275490_gWDmd-L.jpg

And with that, we toasted to good friends and freedom before we headed to bed. The next day dawned and, given that it was my last day in WY, Geoff offered to pilot me up to Bighorn Canyon as I’ve always wanted to see that area.

A stop at the Big Horn Museum where we would have our only sightings…

926275945_hC57H-L.jpg

The morning was cool and beautiful and I was really looking forward to the adventure… the clouds were practically other-worldly…

926276711_tQ83F-L.jpg

926276902_pLjBN-L.jpg

Roadside waterfall…

926278771_dNQ2a-L-1.jpg

The view looking down on the land below… this picture really doesn’t do justice to the amazing sight of the geography texture and colors… simply breathtaking.

926280146_Gd25T-L-1.jpg

As we neared the summit, the temperature dropped into the 40’s and we started seeing snow along the roadside… it was like being transported to an alpine heaven with rolling green hills, wildflowers, and oh those clouds! [/img]

926281623_4RMf9-L.jpg

926282489_6Qo7D-L-1.jpg

926283717_nmurg-L-1.jpg

935070861_gGVwK-L-1.jpg

And then a stop at Shell Falls…

926288294_iwyX4-L.jpg

935077331_ZWg96-L.jpg

Geoff, honey, you made my day… thank you!!

926290056_T9EoZ-L-1.jpg

Continuing on down to Greybull for lunch… wheeeeee!

926292465_x4Ahk-L-1.jpg

Billboard in Greybull… where do YOU draw the line?? Lol

926295007_oKvfZ-L.jpg

Our lunch stop in Greybull… we went into the restaurant and I was confused for a second and then I remembered we weren’t in California no more… smoking and non-smoking sections!!

926295184_TcUsG-L.jpg

Back in Powell… Dorothy’s nephew designed the graphics for this building…

926296327_QYWZS-L.jpg

A stop at the statue outside the firehouse in honor of a fireman and his son who both perished while the father was trying to rescue his boy in a car accident… ☹

926295786_2HMYX-L.jpg

And we heard there was much buzz, none of it too good, about this franchise that slipped in when no one was looking… I didn’t realize it at first but for the most part, there are no chain establishments (i.e., Starbucks, etc.). The locals want to keep it real…

926296125_o8mvC-L.jpg

We came back to find Dorothy at work on a home improvement project…

926296680_4Z2s4-L.jpg

And everyone else getting their electronic fix around the dinner table!

926296957_MfizK-L.jpg

We all reluctantly retired to our beds that evening… both Dorothy and I had a very early start the next day as my flight left at 6 a.m. and she had volunteered to drive me to the airport, god bless her! The rest of the crew would be busy packing up and getting ready to hit the road for home.

The Cody airport has to be seen in person… it’s like you stepped into the Wayback Machine… the whole building is about a good stone’s throw long but they had four TSA agents busily going through our belongings to make sure no one was up to no good… in Cody… at 6 a.m. LOL

So I boarded my little puddle jumper for the first part of my flight home to Salt Lake City where, at that airport, I was accosted by a gaggle of Mormon teenagers who were trying to start up conversations about religion and could they send any info to us somewhere? Sigh…

926297104_vcTi6-L.jpg

I arrived back in CA in a bit of a daze… my reality for the past 5 days had been altered to a simpler time and place… surrounded by beloved friends… experiencing some of the most beautiful surroundings… and I felt so blessed to have come full circle… to still be here in this world to experience all that it has to offer… it is a trip that will forever be etched into my memory as will the people in it.

Great ride report Tyler

I'm a Tuba player from way back. I remember parades like that back in my high school days.

926206013_dehRU-L.jpg

That might have been me carrying the sousaphone #^@ years ago. ;)

I think it's great you came full circle and finished the trip you started last year. It's good to see some of your friends finished the ride with you. What would have been a great ride last year but was tragically cut short, i'm sure turned into a fantastic ride this time around!

Cherish your friends Tyler, they are a great group of people!

Brodie

That was an excellent write-up! I'll never get anywhere near that part of the country, so it's nice to see a small glimpse of it. Great birthday present!

What a freaking outstanding ride report Tyler!!!!

Thanks for sharing and taking me along on that trip.

I lived in southwest Wyoming for three years and yet never hit the Beartooth Highway, or Chief Joseph Scenic Byway until last summer on the way home from WFO. Breathtaking country up there. A 4th of July Cody, WY parade is now on the bucket list.

OK, ya done now Tyler?

EXCELLENT RR!!! That was awesome! This put OM to shame, not that that is very hard. ;)

BTW - I've been to Manzanar Relocation Camp here in Cali on 395. Very nicely done, excellent trip back into that time. Very humbling too.

Thanks so much for such a great ride with you.... And thanks for the food shots. ;)
