I am looking to buy a compact digital camera (still photo). Was looking to find out what the masses use. I bought a Kodak M381, it does okay but, the pictures don't look real clear to me. I don't have the money to keep buying different cameras til I find one with good picture quality. Hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I don't like many things about most 3x cameras out there (image quality, color accuracy/balance, etc.). Bigger lenses help. I have Panasonic Lumix 10x lens, not exactly real compact, but absolutely great pictures/colors and simple to use. Worth it for any scenery shots IMHO. My older 5x Pentax Optio 555 is great too (but small LCD screen).

I also have Panasonic Lumix 10x lens, but just purchased an Olympus StylusTough 3000 to use on the bike, which is waterproof and shockproof. It cost $219 but included a bunch of extras. I got it HERE.

I got a Canon G10, not the smallest but has more options than a point and shoot and a lot smaller than my Nikon D80. The Lumix is a good one and takes good pictures

What model lumix do you have?

I like mine a lot.

You might want to check out the Sony Cybershot TX-5 which is "designed to be dustproof, waterproof up to 3 meters, coldproof down to -10°C (14°F) and shock-resistant for drops of up to 1.5 meters"

I already have a couple cameras, but if I was going to buy one for a bike trip, I'd try this one.

Had this one for 3 years and haven't killed it yet, says all weather right on the front

And I have a Nikon Coolpix S640: 12.2 megapixels, 5x zoom, and iso 6400. It's small, takes great pictures and will shoot videos, also. I use it in conjunction with my Nikon D90. In all my foreign travels, I'll only take the S640 because of it's size. Easy to carry and easy to hide in case I get worried about it getting jacked.

My son has a cheap $90 Nikon and it takes decent pictures.

I have a Sony Cybershot 8.1mp. I've had it for about three or fours years now and it works great. Features this little camera has that you need to look for are; Instant-on capability, large MP, long lasting batteries. My Sony turns on and off super fast. You hit the "On" button and its ready to go instantly. I bought a spare battery to carry with me and have never needed it. I can fill a 2gb Memory Stick on one battery charge. The extra battery is a "just in case" battery now. Nothing is more bothersome than having to wait for a camera to be ready to use.

As I said, my camera is getting older now and Sony has higher mega pixel cameras now, such as, 10.1, 12.1 and 14.1 for super high quality. Mine has a 3x zoom which seems to be fine, but the newer Sony cameras are 4x to 7x optical zoom. The benefit of having real high mega pixel is what you can do as far as editing. The clarity is so good you have the ability to zoom in on a part of a photograph, then crop it making it a proper size that looks as clear as a super zoom shot.

I recently bought a new Canon DSLR which has huge capabilities, but it cost a whole lot more, takes up more space and is more complicated to use its available functions. The good side are the changeability of the lenses, the many features that allow you to alter, improve or clarify photos and most importantly the amount of light these lenses allow in and the higher pixel.

I suggest you at least take a look at the Sony Cybershot cameras. Spending between $100 - $250 you can get a nice little camera that takes great shots and offers lots of different settings. Check out Amazon.com, read the reviews and compare prices.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to stay below $300. Went looking at a few cameras today. Think I like a Panasonic Lumix and some of the Sony cameras.

I have a Nikon CoolPix too, but not sure what model. Every picture I have posted here was taken with that camera. It does fine, packs easily and wasn't a lot of money. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that there is no sound for the video.

On the Olympus Stylus Tough....

+1 I have yet to try it out on the bike, but it gets great reviews from other riders.

The features are great.

While breaking the budget roughly 2.1 times, my Leica D-Lux has been an excellent carry camera. I'm not 100% pleased with it in low light work, but for everyday shooting, it's great!

I've purchased two Kodak digital cameras for the kids in the last two years. The picture quality on both were horrible, but they were cheap and easy to use and the kids didn't care too much about the image quality.

I've now got a Canon SD900
