Has anyone converted their '06/'07 from an AE to an A?

If so, could u please provide the person/dealer who did it, costs associated and any other pertinent details.

Lots of used '06s on the market. Wouldn't it just make more sense to sell the AE and buy an A used?

If mine were paid off, I'd consider a trade... after an appropriate test ride of course. The AE really intrigues me and when I'm riding my Burgman I do *not* miss the clutch at all.

I'm looking into the trade/buy an A scenario but just was thinking about the possibility of the conversion and it would be nice to have a silver "A", probably one of a kind.

I test rode an A the other day and found that I could shift it much smoother than the AE but the clutch takeup point was just off the grip which was discerning. Talked to the service mgr. and he said there was no adjustment. However, I've read that some people swap out the clutch slave cylinder and ? with an '05 and this is improved I believe. Anyone have any helpful input on this?

Chornbe: do u have an A? And if so, are u happy with the clutch takeup point and overall operation of the "manual" clutch operation? Trade? Mine isn't paid off either but....

Not one of a kind since someone reported here that their dealer did an ABS panel swap for them between an A and an AE.

The cost would seem high and it would all be in the "loss" column (investment of the conversion, conversion to a bike with a lower MSRP).

Seems it would be cost-advantageous to sell/trade for the model you want.

The incredibly short friction zone takes a moment to get used to (compared to some other bikes), but it falls smack in the middle of clutch pull, so it's well balanced. The friction zone comes on after a reasonable amount of lever release, and the tension is OK. I do get a little crampy after 20 minutes of stop-start traffic, but it's not horrible.

Also, this clutch does *not* fade with heat as some others have. My cruiser used to get a *really* soft feel to it when it was very hot (stop-n-start traffic). The Feej doesn't do that at all.

The dealer where I bought mine put an AE on the floor after I bought mine. If they'd had that instead of the "A" when I found it I'd have bought the AE.

I wonder... would it be as simple as a tech weekend to swap the necessary bits...? Hmmm... the things to ponder.

one thing that needs to be considered with any atempted converting of an AE to an A

id that the AE has a different shift pattern. on the AE all gears are "up" with neutral

being at the bottom.

I wanted to bump this up because I am seriously looking into this. If I can't convert it, I will probably end up buying a new 2010 Concours or FJR-A. That seems more expensive than the necessary modifications. I also have this resource locally. Thanks!

Buy the new bike.

Changing the ECU, clutch pumbing, servos and wiring, etc., and then adding the new clutch lever & assembly and plumbing is going to be either frustrating or expensive.

It isn't a simple conversion.

 
I was hoping that was not the case. Oh well..... Post ended for me.

 
Used engines run $1k-$2k. The same salvage yard that supplies the engine may have the left handlebar with the clutch reservoir and plumbing too. Nothing to it, just like jacking up a house and replacing the foundation ;)

 
WOW ! Amazed at all the interest in this subject from so long ago !

Hence.....I sold/traded the AE on a Kawasaki C14 couple of years ago. Then sold the C14 due to the excessive heat in the crotch area.

Then bought a 2008 FJR "A" model. Rode it a little over 4,000 miles in 2 months. During that time I had a custom made saddle made while I waited by Mayer in Ojai California and installed a Power Commander with a custom map.

After the two months of high time use the bike has been in my garage on it's centerstand with stabilfuel in the tank. I run it every 30 days for 20 - 30 minutes in and out of gear and that's what it's been doing for over a year now.

Kinda lost interest in mcycle ridin'. Nothing wrong with the bike...runs GREAT and has a comfy saddle too !

I'm too lazy to sell it so......there she sits in perfect condition.
