Coolant Flush Question

Use a premix antifreeze/coolant and put your worries aside.

Water wetters work to help transfer heat better. My company make a water wetter called Motor Max.

EPA testing shows exactly what it does to cylinder walls and combustion by enhancing the ability of the coolant to absorb heat from the motor and dissipate it more efficiently.

Don't confuse this with the running temperature of the motor, it will always be what the thermostat is set for.

However, cylinder walls are cooled quicker and more evenly which the reports prove reduces emissions considerably and yields a slight mpg increase.
You can also add water wetter to a 50/50 coolant to improve the heat transfer. In actual practice, I have ran distilled water with water wetter in my race bike for 12 years (change it every year). The radiator and rest of the cooling system components are pristine. Of course, this setup offers no freezing protection.

A couple of posts have mentioned antifreeze during the winter only, and water only or water and Water-Wetter for the summer.

Antifreeze is not "just" antifreeze. It's called that because it lowers the freezing point of the coolant mixture, but it also raises the boiling point. That's not a factor I would ignore! And that's completely aside from the corrosion protection it offers.

Supposedly they are the same but I would use distilled unless purified was all I could get.
different processes and (potentially) different results.

"purified" is vague and can include any number of different filtering techniques. if those are stringent enough you can get the same results as distilled. it would then take more time and cost more for the end result than less stringent ways.

"distilled" is a well-understood process of boiling and precipitating the steam. no solids make the transition.

for cooling systems in all vehicles, go distilled. it's only a buck a gallon.

other good tips:

DO use a good, silicate-free coolant/anti-freeze all year round.

DO NOT bother with special coolants unless track days require non-ethylene based coolants (or straight water). "Engine Ice" is 5 times the cost of a decent coolant and makes no significant difference in the FJR).

POSSIBLY use "Water Wetter" or like products if you experience cooling issues (the FJR doesn't) or are doing track days that restrict coolant use.

DO check the background of the rider telling you that you MUST use some costly, high-zoot solutions (it could be they learned it from track days or those focused on track days where typical coolants are banned to prevent track contamination during a crash).

Anything other than a good bike-specific pre-mix or a major-brand, silicate-free/aluminum-friendly antifreeze/coolant+DISTILLED water is throwing good money after nothing.

Gotta toss my 2 cents in JUST BECAUSE DAMMIT!!!

Here's the original post, directly quoted:

Getting my **** together to change coolant, do I use distilled water or purified water to flush?
Going straight off the question, ANY answer is okay, because he's not asking what to refill with...he's asking what to flush with. Use the garden hose. It'll be fine.

Now, after you've finished flushing the system, just use a 50/50 premix like the Honda stuff to refill with.

This post right damn here is a prime example of why RadioHowie: IS THE SMARTEST KID IN THE CLASSROOM!!! jes' sayin' and nuff' said!

All this talk about draining and no one talked about doing the "********" after you drain and flush, that's using compressed air hose with a rag to seal the filler spout and blow all the remaining coolant left in the engine, you will be surpirsed at how much is left after it stops draining. If you do this you need to place a deflector in front of the drain hole so the coolant won't blow out across the garage.

I was waiting for that to come up, so I didn't have to bring it up myself.

The "********" was necessary for the guy that described it (Warchild) because he was switching from green stuff to DexCool, and you cannot mix them. Any. At all. So he had to remove ALL of the green stuff.

In a normal coolant change, a bit here and there is not significant in the least, any more so than in an oil change. (Anybody actually lifted their bike up and turned it over to get the last dregs of oil out during a change??!?!?!!)

The "********" is a waste of time and effort for a drain-n-fill change.

And remember to leave the old coolant out at the edge of your yard as a special treat for the neighbor's dog. They just love that ****!

Thanks for all of the great input. I will stay away from my tap water, I have a well and always find very small stones trapped in the faucet strainers.

I am glad i didn't ask about sheep no tellin what people would have said.

Thank you. I thought this process was far beyond overkill for a normal replace/refill. Perhaps I'm mistaken but I thought the boiling protection from anti freeze came from the system being pressurized?

Pressurization raises the boiling point also, but a 50/50 mix boils at a higher temperature than plain water, even before being pressurized.

I was told by water professionals the Distilled water and Purified water is the same thing. :)
Yeah and you also thought a black dildo laying on the mattress was your man lover
fixed.
This fascination that you guys have with dildos is disturbing. I see therapy sessions in both your futures and HotRodZilla will be in the waiting room next in line!
Actually majicmaker, I met HotRodZilla at Alpine, Arizona on Monday 4/23 so we could ride The Devil's Highway '666' together. All of us had dinner at the Bear Wallow Cafe and AJ ordered chocolate ice cream for dessert, I couldn't handle watching HRZ spooning chocolate ice cream into his mouth so I just went outside! jes' sayin' and nuff' said!
