Got back from my trip Mon. night. From my home, Long Island, N.Y. to Niagra Falls and back. My first long distance two up trip and I must say the bike ran and handled flawlessly . Even my pillion was impressed with the power and comfort of the bike. It was her first long ride on a bike and she was a trooper the whole way. May have found a keeper. :D

Anyhow, I did a complete going over before my trip. New tires, rechecked pressures and adjusted for two up, and checked all fluids. I had to add about a pint of coolant to the overflow to get it to the mark. The bike had 9000 miles and never added before. Now with 10,300 miles the overflow is empty. I know that it's not leaking because I always look under the bike for drips, and there is nothing in my garage or where I park at work( also indoors the same place everyday). I will top it off when I get home tonight and keep a closer eye on the level and temp the next few days.

Has anyone else had a problem with coolant loss or is this normal for the mileage ?

I am going away next week, maybe I'll drop it with Yamaha and have them check into it . The bike is only 3 1/2 months old so anything wrong should be covered under warr.

Check under your right side driver's footpeg. it's possible you have a leak on the bottom of the water pump (mine did). It drips directly onto the sensor on the catalytic convert, so it never makes it to the ground because it boils right off. You'll see a white residue on the cat sensor if you have that leak. It won't do it unless it's hot, so it won't show in your garage either (if it's hot enough to leak, it'll be hot enough to boil off when it hits the cat sensor). It required a new gasket, a new o-ring (not sure I know what the difference is there) and a new impellor - for some reason they found mind had rusted when they pulled it, even though it's only ever had Yamacool in it.

If it is the waterpump leak you will smell antifreeze. Everything smthng said is spot on what my bike did and required for part replacement. I figured they ordered the extra parts for "just in case" scenarios and/or inflatable warranty billing.
