The wife and I were on our anniversary road trip when we ran into mud on the road way cruising around 70mph. The rear wheel lost traction and we went sliding.

We were both ok as we wear full leathers all the time. We bounced back up, picked the bike up and continued on our way. I broke a peg but I was able to get that replaced at a dealer with a motocross peg, which I liked so much I replaced the other stock peg with one as well. Its shorter and curved up which provides higher ground clearence, a weak point with the FJR when it comes to lean angle.

Anyhow, I'm debating about filing and insurance claim or fixing it myself. I've tore the bike down and the frame is fine. I've ridden another 2000 miles since then, just scarred and not so pretty.

I need all new plastics all around. Left, right, lower and possibly the nose but that didn't crack. Also, the bike slid on both sides and the saddle bags took the damage. It looks like the painted plastic covers can be removed and replaced without needing to replace the entire bag.

Any ideas on cost and where I can order online? Used is fine. This is a 2006 cobalt blue FJR.

Thanks,

Clovis

I buggered up one little part of tupperware on the FJR i had. It was just shy of 200$ so it adds up quick. If they are not toally trashed even if they are i would take them off and too a good body shop they can do wonders these days with all the flexy plactic stuff on cars.

Pm sent. I also need a passenger bracket. The bracket that keeps the sag from swaying snapped.

Oh and the plastics are thrashed. Cracked. Not just road rash sadly.

The cost of plastics adds up pretty fast... had the bike go over on the right side while on the center stand (blown over by a freak gust of wind - which also knocked down part of my fence). I replaced the right side plastics with OEM parts. So, I spent close to $1000 (mirror, 2 fairings and a side panel). That is not to mention that the right bag wasn't on the bike - a savings for me. I did not replace the right side muffler which got a very minor dent and scratches (just the muffler was like $620). Did all the labor myself to save about 2.5 hrs from the dealer (at close to $90 per hour).

Seeing how much you may be looking at in repairs, I think in your situation I would have made a claim (my guess is that you have close to $2500 or more in damage - to replace all the damaged parts with new OEM parts). Labor has to be added to that bill. If you have made no claims in a long while, this should not hurt too much. I didn't claim ($1000), but had it been more expensive, I would have.

Let the insurance buy it. It's mega $$$$$$. The bag panels are not available separately, only the entire bag. There'a forum member who's very good at painting them, but I don't know how much bodywork he wants to do to get rid of scars.

My first crash the bike slid but did not flip, but it jammed under an Armco barrier, so it did have damage on both sides. One bag, both lower fairings, both upper fairings, both mirrors, windshield, and front fender. They also bought me a helmet, boots, rain gear, and jacket, total claim was nearly 4 grand. They included labor in the check, but I put the stuff on myself and ordered it online, so I easily made up the 500-dollar deductible.

Well the claim itself isn't the issue, it's the number of claims. I have a $250 deductible and $3000 in optional equipment coverage. The issues are 2. I worry that Allstate might total the bike as its an 06 and it took me a year of searching to find this one. 80% of FJRs for sale, when they come up for sale are sold by dealers.

Concern #2 is that my agent thought this might cause the policy to come up for non rental next year as this would be claim #4 in 6 years and my policy premium is only $230 on this bike.

My premium on an r1 was $430 and the fz6 was $80 a year all with $250 deductibles.

Ithe FJR is my 3rd bike. First was an r1. I had a low slide and it was stolen a year later. Two claims for that ehich totaled around $12000 for collecting about $500 in premium. My fz6 had a slide last September so that's 3. $80 a year for 5 years and they paid out $2600 on that claim. This would be #4.

So her point is that they've paid out a lot more in claims then they have collected in premium for that policy.

If it happens I'll push back and point out that I have multiple policies with them totaling $4000 a year in premiums for the past 9 years with a whole 1 claim paid out in that time (besides the bikes) that totaled $1200. If they want to cancel my motorcycle policy I'll take my entire business else where.

I also refer a lot of home owners policies to them (I'm a mortgage banker). That would stop.

Claim it is. I was hoping there might be some after market plastic options instead.

I hit a hog aka Florida wild pig when mine was new. As it was the FIRST day I had it covered by insurance (Geico) I wanted to try and fix it myself. I don't know "in depth" what damages you have, but those panels are expensive and add up quick!

As long as you don't have deeper damage you're not seeing now, changing out the panels isn't a huge deal if you take your time and keep track of all the fasteners. Mother Yamaha didn't like using just one kind of fastener - expect to find 4 different ones on even the small ones!

Good luck whatever you decide. Of course if you do it yourself you can get better deals on OEM by shopping around, and you may even find good used if you're lucky.

I will say that I still occasionally find little broken bits on the right side (where the hit was) so really give it a thorough inspection! I ended up having to make the claim as I had too much hidden damage including bent forks - but the "kids" at a now-defunct Yamaha dealer did a behind schedule job, and as stated above, didn't find it all.

Good luck; PM me if feel the need, I'll be glad to share what I know.

Damn that sucks! Glad you and your wife are ok!

Who do you think make thm for mamma. They do not make them themselves, they out source. Cheeper in china.

The Chinese panels are Gen-I only, unless someone has (finally) molded up some Gen-II pieces, but I've heard that they also join differently, i.e. all or nothing. You can't mix one of their parts with the rest of yours... It won't mate up, fasteners won't align, etc. I can't swear to that, but it would not be surprising.

They're also not going to be painted to match the Yammy colors.

As wfooshee said, those China made panels are hit or miss when it comes to assembly... something to keep in mind. I am glad I went OEM, but then again I am anal about details.
