Just changed the oil on my '04 ...

Finally pried off the old welded on (the drain plug) crush gasket after it being reused about 4 times with no leaks.

Since the ebay four oil filters purchase included crush gaskets, I used a new one.

don't think it matters which way it's put on - I choose the rounded side toward the engine and flat side against the drain plug

whoops, add on, I did it backwards according to FJRtech Oil Change Advice

I'm not sure why it would matter as both the bolt and the case are flat surfaces

I wonder what ya'll choose to do here ???

TIA for your input,

Mike in Nawlins'

Well, it's in the name "crush washer"....the raised part of the washer needs to be able to be crushed, which happens if it's against the (steel) drain bolt. :)

I have reused the solid washer that was on the bike when I bought it new. I am not using the crush washer at all.
New? Then that supposed solid washer would also be known as the "crushed crush washer".

It resembles a solid wash greatly after it's first use, but I'm sure FJRs from the factory all got crush washers on the engine oil drain plug and the final drive.

..and thanks Captain Bob for the link. Knew it had been talked about many times before. ;)

The bike comes with a crush washer. It might just look like a solid washer because it's been crushed. next time you have it off, look very closely and you should be able to see a slight groove on one side.

I just ordered a bunch of crush washers through the online store of my local dealer (10% off online orders and no shipping/handling if I pick it up in-store). The same exact washer is used for the final drive drain plug. They're cheap enough that you might as well buy them in bulk so you always have one around when it's time to change the oil.

I replace mine each time I change the oil. But an interesting thing I've found is that every time I go to the dealer to pick up a half-dozen or so (hey, I ride a lot of miles), the dealer only seems to have one or two in stock, and I've NEVER had a parts guy that knows the part number from memory. WTF, don't they change them? How do they get by with only a couple in stock? "Sorry sir, we'll have to wait a few days to do your oil change while we wait for the parts to come in." Could this washer be unique to the FJR? Me thinks not.

My pleasure Matt.

Plus there are "bonus links" showing oil change techniques, "where to buy in mass quantities" and substitutions.

More than any mortal man would ever care to know but all good.

It is solid. It is a totaly differnt washer then the crush washer, I did not do the first oil change at 600 miles so maybe the dealer swapped in a solid one.

That's no doubt what happened. Following my 600 mile service had a mix of used washers on it - the tech apparently grabbed whatever was lying about. Also - it was short a quart of oil.

And +1 to a new crush washer each change.

New crush washer only needed if damaged (per the Service Manual). The crush (rounded) goes toward the bolt as the bolt is forged and the crush will conform to any irregularities. The flat goes toward the engine, which mates to the milled surface that is also flat.

I reuse the old one, but apply a small amount of RTV each time just to make sure. When the bike was new, the final drive drain was leaking even though the plug was tight.

One of the things on my ToDo list is to make a copper washer.

It would take me less time to turn one on the lathe than the drive to a parts store.

Thanks for the reminder. I only have a few more months to get that ToDo list done... :)

This thread is totally euless with out ******* pics.
I'll be sure to take a pic of my crush washer ......the one that came with the bike, the one that has 60K worth of miles and about maybe 20+ oil changes on it's resume - it and has never let out a single drop of oil. I don't expect it will.

Me thinks at 100Kmiles I *might* break down and invest in a new washer. Seems maybe I could buy a couple thousand used ones from the guys on here who swap them out at every change. But, instead I'll likely just find juicy copper one that fits -or kinda fits.

I do carry a spare drain plug in my tool kit though ...how many of you guys do that?

No need to when you replace the crush washer every time.

:****:

Yo Nevada hick-boy, you need to get a new avatar. I just waisted 30 minutes of my busy day mesmerized by it. :p

Oh, and as for the topic..............

Whenever I order part from my favorite online discount vendor, I always fill up my 'stock'. I always have 4-6 oil filters on hand, 3-4 air filters, spark plugs, brake pads, and at least 2-6 extra of every fastener on the FJR. And I always have 10-15 crush washers on hand. They're cheap, so why not? I changed them every oil and final drive change.
