I'm fairly certain the FJR has more than enough power and for a long time the advertised HP was 145. Now I'm seeing 141 popping up in places. There are some guys even talking about de-tuned French engines. Could someone please enlighten an FNG?

Also I see Cobalt Blue and Galaxy Blue for 05 and 06 FJR's. Are they the same color?

Last question, I promise (fingers crossed). What kind of mpg should I expect? Let's say at 70mph interstate highway cruising.

Thanks,

Rod

145 baby

French Detuned is a joke

Cobalt Blue and Galaxy blue are different. Cobalt is a bit darker.

1.) The only way to tell about the HP figures is for someone to put an '06 on a dyno and report. While some riders could probably tell about a 4 hp difference, I doubt my, er, uhm, amply padded derriere could.

2.) Cobalt and Galaxy Blue are NOT the same color. The '06's are a "deeper" or "darker" blue. Once you see them side-by-side you'll understand.

3.) MPG is a variable depending on rider throttle control and type of gasoline.

Winterized or oxygenated= gasohol. Usually gasohol will produce slightly less mpg. Commuting in CA (gasohol) I avg. around 38 mpg. On extended trips (read lots of highway miles) I can avg. 40-42. Outside CA where I can buy "real gasoline" my MPG can jump to 45-48 mpg.

Heh-heh-heh: YMMV!

Oh yeah?!? Says who? I read it on the internet so it has to be true! Besides, they can be fixed by taking out the throttle body restrictor plates and changing the chip in the ignition module. So there, Mr. Smarty Pants. :clapping:

I wonder who started all the French Detuned Engine threads, anyhow?

Hello all

I have a brand new (2 days old) 06/07 FJR.

I am very used to high power bikes - the FJR replaced a K6 GSX-R 1000 (insane power), which replaced a Blackbird (lotza power).

:)

The new FJR has more than enough power and torque to keep me happy...

Do NOT get suckered into buy one of those gray bikes - those are primer gray for the do it yourself people and they never seem to get around to painting their bikes - kind of a white trash thing :p - and a unpainted bike is slow due to the drag caused by the unfinished paint job :D

The french will continue to get bikes that surrender under any cirumstances - it is not an urban myth.

Galaxy Blue is the fastest color - Cobalt Blue is fast too. Grey is Ghey (not that there is anything wrong with that) :D

I really hope you understand sarcasm when you read this otherwize you think I'm wierd :)

The French de-tune is not a myth-there is a horsepower limitation in effect, the FJR amongst others sold in France have intake restrictors that must be removed if one wants the engines potential revealed. From a Frenchy/Limey forum-

Currently here in France :
If the police see that your exhaust system is not legal (doesn't matter the sound) you get a 45 Euros ticket and you have your motorcycle's registration document confiscated on the spot.

Then you have 48 hours to show your motorcycle to the police with the stock exhaust.

If you don't do this, your registration document is confiscated with all the consequences.

Latest new, the police here has now some trucks with a dyno inside

(the rear wheel horsepower is limited to 100 cv in France).

The procedure is the same but the ticket is about 1500 Euros if your RWHP is above
I have read of numerous methods/tips etc for modifying the French sourced machines to eliminate the restrictors the manufacturers have to put in place in order to sell them there. Horsepower restrictions also exist in several european countries as concerns licensing IIRC.

There, I fixed your Typo. No Need to thank me :p

I avg 42 mpg, and I am not easy on the right wrist.

(If that aint a slow pitch right down the sweet spot.....) :D

You are all wrong. The 03 silver is the fastest. It uses different cams, injectors and computer. You just read it on the internet so it must be true and I think the parts book agrees.

The 04 colour (which is the colour of my ride) just told me in the garage it doesn't matter what the colour of any other FJR is, because they are always behind it  ....& since I just read this on the internet it must be true :p .....

I think the issue here is that some whacko-clown  on the forum keeps posting to be watchful of getting a French detuned eingine in your North American FJR.

When we find him, you hold him and I'll hit him! :headbonk:

Until then, you should all be checking your engine serial numbers against the posted French engines on the European thread, just to make sure.

Tropical....that bike looks really good on you! :D
Nice of you to say so.

:)

I'm loving it...

Talk about big bloody brother!

How could any sane society put up with that rubbish!

Perhaps the reason for the discrepancy is that on the Continent of Europe they generally use "PS" (German horsepower), whereas in the UK and US they use Imperial HP (that's when they aren't talking in kW, which is a universal measurement).

The '06 power is quoted by Yamaha as 105.5 kW. This equates to 143.44 PS or 141.48 HP.

Is the French restriction 100kW (136 PS or 134 HP)? That seems more likely a unit for them to use in legislation. (Even that wouldn't be very noticeable.)

Are there any French manufacturers of motorcycles? If so, they could ignore the restriction, 'cos the French only obey rules that suit them. (Puts on protective gear to await flaming.)

Thanks guys.

To recap:

French engines are in France

There are two Blues

HP is "enough"

Cruising MPG is probably 40+

(Only alcohol around here is in the HD drivers)

Sound about right?

Forgot to mention one more tidbit about the detuned French engines. Everyone knows that due to the lack of horsepower in those engines, in combination with the rotational Inertia created by the shaft drive that the French versions can't do wheelies.

Since ur a FNG let us enlighten you grasshopper -

1. The Silver ones are fastest

2. The Blue ones are slower (and not as pretty)

3. Do you really give a **** about a 1,2, or 3 discrepency in HP?

4. Mileage at cruise - see #3 above

(Just one mans opinion - and I do own a 'Harley', so ---)

#1 is probably correct, my silver Sprint ST is the fastest

#2 is also correct, see #1

#3 Not really, didn't like the idea of gettin' a French anything though

#4 I am serious about this one. I ride in a lot of places where gas stations are few and far between.

Mike, you do own two "real" motorcycles, so ---)

It's nice to be on a list where sanity is suspect at times :D

I have gone 240 miles between fill ups. This scared me. I generally refill at the 200 mark for safety. Mileage at cruise vastly depends on your cruise speed. I tend to cruise at 80. I mean 65
