Ok, so this may be a dumb question, but here goes. After this guy is mauled to death, why is it necessary to hunt down the bear and kill it?

I suppose it is believed that once a bear kills and tastes a human then that bear is more likely to do so again.

It had nothing to do with "tasting" a human. Haha...Sorry Pterodactyl! It has to do with the bear having a lack of fear of humans and now knowing it is an alpha, compared to them. Feeding them reduces their fear, and then, since they are wild animals, their instinct kicks on and they do what they do. If this wasn't a fed bear, he's just a mean bastard, so officials have decided removing all doubt that he'll hurt someone again is the best plan.

Well this little inane post has more views and responses than my last ride report. How about that. Perhaps I ought to give up the ride reports and make more off topic posts.
It's amazing how many folks see bears as harmless cartoon characters.
There was a video study done in a Banff, AB parking lot; 5 locked cars parked in a row, food in one of the cars. The bear walked the line of cars, sniffed the one out with the food in it and promptly ripped the locked passenger door off the car like he was opening a shower curtain.
As for hunting down and killing the bear for being a bear? I am guessing it is to give a false sense of security to surviving park users. Other than that? it's a baseless action.

Any way, I don't think this case is one where the bear was looking for food, but likely was confused about what the humans were doing and was protecting something, like his den, some food he had nearby, or even simply his territory.
When bears are not hunted by humans they don't learn to be wary around humans. This particular bear was proven to be dangerous to humans and would likely attack again, even more fearlessly and with less reason, now that he learned how helpless unarmed humans are in the woods.

Because that specific bear now KNOWS humans are food and will attack again.
Hiked a lot in the Cohutta Wilderness, which is where they dump "trouble" black bears from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Never was harassed by a bear, because I always screamed at the top of my lungs: "HOLY ****!!!! IT'S A BEAR!!!" They ran away every time. (No kidding.)
Sympathies to the guy's family. That's gotta be a miserable way to go.
