What an epic fail. How came we bought this crappy bike

I feel like such a dope.

My 2004 doesn't exhibit that problem.

I take that back, my dash doesn't exhibit lower than 16 degrees either...

[sWAG] Scientific Wild Ass Guess

All the important analog signals (varying DC levels) from the engine sensors get fed to the ECU where they go into a precision Analog to Digital converter. The digital results go to the ECU to provide inputs to critical functions like the Fuel and Ignition systems.

The thermistor -- a fancy name for resistance based ambient temperature sensors, goes directly to the Meter Assembly. Yamaha can buy an off the shelf, for pennies, one IC (chip) device that takes in a temperature sensor output then converts it to a digital signal that can be read and displayed by most LCD displays. When reading the specs for commercial grade indoor one chip temp sensors almost all of them cut off at 122º F. At the lower end the various ICs have ranges that vary from 14º to 32º. If a person were to take a few bits of unrelated information and draw a wild conclusion, it would appear that the reason the ambient temperature range of 16º to 122º is because Yamaha used a standard commercial IC that has a digital output which is compatible with the Yamaha LCD display IC.

For those of us who are waaay less edumicated about such thingamajigs, your SWAG makes perfect sense!! And really, I have better sense than to go out riding if it's less than 16F anyway. And yes, I know it can be done, I just feel that I should let others do it and let someone else have some fun for a change...

Coldest I've ridden was about 20 degrees when I lived in Michigan......wouldn't want to ride any colder...especially with icy road possibilities.

I've seen about 112 or so on the FJR here in So Cal.

Ride by your nearest bank and take a pic.

The owners manual states: ...display shows the ambient temperature from 16°F to 122°F in 1°F increments
Once again it looks like Yamaha has been short sighted in anticipating the way the FJR will be ridden. Ambient only displays down to 16º, cruise capped at 80 mph -- what were they smoking thinking

Not that they were smoking... They were just too cold to think right.

Dang it, I wish I hadn't read this thread.

Yes, I'm one of the crazy ones and I thought I had set a new personal record last month while riding in 16 degree temps:

And now I find out that it was probably even colder (forecast was for less than 16) and I didn't capture the complete depths of my insanity.

It was too hot to stop for pictures, but I can also confirm that the temp gauge will go up to 107 which we experienced during a freak Seattle hot spell a few years ago.

I've seen as high at 104 deg, so not sure why the low end would be limited to two digits.
The digit limitation doesn't sound like the answer since it definitely displays 3 on the upper end.

My guess would be that 16 to 122 is just the accuracy range of the sensor.
