A friend shared this article with me and I found it to be very well written and pretty spot on having been through it myself. It also gives good insight into how to help others who are going through a trauma, whether losing a loved one, medical or accident-related issues, etc.

I'm a major trauma survivor several times over and a rehab veteran. One instance resulted in months of agonizing physical therapy. In the end I could never be as well healed as I am without the work and associated pain. My PT guy had this on the door to his torture chamber therapy room:

If anything was missing from that article, (IMHO) Alan's PT nailed it, don't lose your sense of humor. Trying to see some humor in a very dark subject is what has helped my Dad through some very tough years. Come to think of it, he was twisted before all the issues appeared that he now deals with. So glad I turned out normal.

True dat... being able to laugh with my nurses as they were doing dressing changes helped all of us I think... it's a warped sense of humor in times like those but definitely necessary! ;)

Great article, thanks for sharing. I have been on both sides of the trauma world and it is indeed a warped sense of humor that help get through the day (or shift)

Yes it has changed me. Each day will never be the same. Not a day goes by that I don't shed tears.

Speaking from experience.

At a follow-up doctor's appointment for my surgically rebuilt shoulder a year and a half ago, the nurse called them "physical terrorists". But, he said it with a smile. They helped me get better, and that's all I could ask.

(Note: This has nothing to do with a previous post about my procedure on the Table of Shame)

Tyler, I have read your interesting posts for quite some time. However, none have been as timely and hit me center mass as this one. Last night, I held my father's hand as he took his last breath due to a very aggressive lung cancer. I imagine this artical will be a repeated read for me for a while.

Thank you,

Steve

Oh man... I am so sorry!!

Yes.

Simply yes.

When your entire universe is pain,

Pain beyond description or belief.

When EVERY moment of life

..hurts

and the seconds lead to hours.

and hours to days.

and days to months.

and months to years.

And at some point, the ultimate question?

Yes, I get it.

I hope you never do.

T has been there.

Me too.
