Folks who went to WFO-9 will remember Dean Tanji (ninjaboy on this forum) as the producer and maker of the Hard Miles series of videos and having put many miles on his '03 FJR.

Dean and Lisa Landry decided to ride to the tip of South America and currently on Day 7 in southern Mexico. They're riding V-Stroms and were going to have Bob Higdon and Mike Kneebone with them....until issues forced them to drop out before the start

However, Lisa and Dean are veteran riders together, I'm sure will do great, and are blogging as they go at https://www.allstarmccircus.com with a SPOT GPS trackers at https://spotwalla.com...0d4ce143055f03f

To read about their day of shake downs in Tampico https://www.allstarmccircus.com/?p=579.

It will be be standard reading for me the next few weeks. Enjoy. ;)

Thank You, Matt; I'll be glued to this. May I have permission to put this on https://www.azbeemers.org my BMW Club's site? Lots of us AZ Beemers are currently trying to coordinate a South America run in 2013!

I don't know why not. They use their full names in the blog in at least one place and don't have it restricted in any way....nor have I received terse instructions threatening my life, limb, reproductive organs, or (most importantly) my member number.

Just in case...do me a favor....go to their site and link what you can glean from it instead of copying mine.

Muchas Gracias, Ignacio!

Way freakin' cool. The forum seems to have gone 'soft' lately and I need some true riding porn.

Thanks Iggie, you Riding-Porn-Provider-You!

...and Alaska too?

Holy Mokes, this is a GREAT read!

Iggie, I owe you 2x your favorite drink at next sighting.

Bump for an outstanding travel bog.

Great read, like a favorite novel you can't put down.

Seems that Dean has found the perfect travel companion, loves doing the paperwork and interacting with officialdom. :)

Yes, but I think he is getting pretty darn close to getting socked in the eye by Lisa! That look on her face at the document window was priceless..I would be very afraid..

Thanks for the bump. I hadn't seen it. For anyone interested in long moto travels, there is a great resource out there. I went to their Nortern Cali Meet last year and it was terrific fun, and wonderful to meet so many people who had traveled South America or around the World on bikes. I have no connection to the Horizons Unlimited group. It is run by a couple who have traveled around the world by motorcycle multiple times, just good peeps.

Thanks for sharing Matt.

Dean's got gremlins far from home. hope they can work it out it would be a shame to blow the ride now.

Well I posted, but because its my first post its still in moderation. This is not uncommon for these bikes. Do a Google search on signal generator or crank position sensor, and it mimics very closely the problem being described by Dean and Lisa. Its a simple fix, but very easy to miss. The camshaft sensor (CMPS) should throw error code C11, and the crankshaft sensor (CKPS) should thow C12, but the blog doesn't even mention an attempt to retrieve error codes. On the Strom, the dealer mode plug to read the codes is beside the storage tray, partially behind the left plastic side cover. Just remove the seat. In the 6-pole plug with only 4 wires (the smaller of the 2 diagnostic plugs, has a soft rubber cover) you jump the white/red and black/white wires to get codes according to posts on stromtrooper.com.

They were on the right track (Day 50) when they changed the EECU, but the same problem still appeared, most likely because the EECU is still getting an erroneous firing signal from the CKPS.

Mind if I copy and paste your post, so it goes through quicker without them having to look at their moderation requests?

<div><br></div><div>EDIT - Just "chatted" with Lisa - it seems like they have already tried looking for the Cranshaft position sensor codes, still no dice! :( </div>

Dean's SPOT shows that they crossed over to the Great Island earlier today, and are now in Rio Grande, on the Argentine side of the island. They have about 125 miles of riding to reach Ushuaia.
