I use Bel deer whistles mounted on the lower fork leg riveted thru the reflector. When I have seen deer (and other animals, dogs etc:) they seem to turn their heads and look at me. Haven't had one run in front of me since I put them on.

:glare: OK, I call BS, these things have been proven time and time again to be all but useless.

StateFarm used to give them away back in the day, even they wised up after a while.

Even if they *did* work, the last thing I'd want to do is encourage a forest rat to run (into my path).

But to each his own, and yes people will buy anything, just look at what Ron Popeil has accomplished

WOW some disturbing video! No one could have dodged that, no one. Personally i think we need to start hunting them more aggressively. God knows there are plenty of subsistance living people who could use the food here in WV. :assassin:

We've hit or been hit in every vehicle except the Feejer, and this includes killing Bambi with my Ducati ST2.

The problem with this and other devices is that the damn deer aren't so skittish around here any more! There are so many of them and us that they just stand next to the pavement as the cars go by, then try to cross the road whenever their pea-brains give them the urge. Heck, I've seen them give a disinterested look when I hit the car horn!

Nuking 'em is why I'm promoting. No woods equals no more deer. If we can't get legislation passed, then a graduation requirement for every kindergarten should be collection of at least 14 deer skins! Say it with me . . . dead deer, dead deer, dead deer!

Bob

No deer were killed or molested in writing this, despite my wishing so.

$6.99 and 10 minutes work make me feel like I've done something to mitigate the threat...

That was a buddy of mine within our regular riding group north of San Antonio on Smithson Valley Rd. Luckily he wasn't hurt bad, but the bike did flip over on him. He had just mounted a new pencil camera down low on the fairing and was trying it out. The vid made him psuedo famous as it's been all over the net / world for the past 3 or 4 years. For the longest time it was called faked or fabbed, but you can be assured it's real and happened just that fast.

EDIT: Oh yea, I don't believe in deer whistles either. Put some on our trucks at Amoco that ran through the Hill Country and they attracted every deer out there. In that sense, they worked great!

We have a substantial herd here in Illinois. I live out in the country and it's nothing for me to see 8 to 10 every morning as iI go through the Shawnee National Forest on my way to work. I travel S---L---O---W when I'm near the house.

They get hunted pretty heavily, but just seems like we can't put a dent in the population. Hitting one on a motorcycle is one of my worst fears. I've knocked off four with pickup trucks. They guy in that video is way beyond Blessed!

Oh yeah - I've tried the deer whistles - I don't feel they do anything at all to preventy an accident.

I think that I may hole a record in deer kill----14----hits-----16-------

starting @ age 15 with my first one with a old pedal bike, then cars, trucks,

and not the last with the a 1400 Intruder.

I don't know but they like me NOT.. :glare:

Whistles no worky for me.

Chuck

I've always wanted to order the hair in a can to see what it really looked like in person...

This is a good reminder to you folks riding the Utah 1088 rally, and to all of us who are going to WFO this year. As I found out in 2005, Utah has more deer than people roaming around. When it starts to get dark, keep your eye peeled for those little fuckers.

It's been my experience that Bambi doesn't pay that much attention to the FJR, at least as compared to other vehicles. I worry most about an oncoming vehicle startling the creature and causing it to jump out in front of me. Whenever I am the lone vehicle, Bambi typically just looks up and keeps chewing, but doesn't run.

That speaks loudly about the danger of running up on Bambi from the exit of a tight turn. (Which I did during EOM!) Yep, middle of the day and there she was, just looking at me with that "aren't you going to stop?" look on her face.

Even if there was something that alerted Bambi, I'm not sure I would want her to move. I'd rather give my Brother a few more buck and doe stamps to enjoy each year.

Have I got a deal for you! I have a special rock in the front yard known as the anti-predator cat rock. I have never seen a lion, tiger, cougar, panther, or other large cat in my front yard. It came with the house. I'm willing to sell it so I can transplant a nice shade tree instead.

Picked this up on the Strom site. Thought it might be worth some discussion.

Do not ride too early and for certain not late when the critters are moving. Oh and be lucky.

... yep - that's the time of day I call "buck-thirty"... and that SPECIAL time of year (fall) when they get... frisky. You hardly ever see a buck until then - at that time, they come out of the "wood work" (i.e. forest) and act really stupid...

About a year ago one of America's finest Motorcycle Safety Advocate, and a friend to anyone who rides lost his own life when a dear ran out in front of him. He went from place to place and all over the country on his bike to promote motorcycle safety and awareness. I am sorry I can't remember this man's name, but the only thing that comes to mind is, if a deer can run out in front of him with all of his knowledge and ability to quickly react to just about any situation, there is nothing any of us can do but just enjoy the ride, this should teach us all a lesson. Apparently he was speaking at a motorcycle safety seminar. When he finished he wanted to get a room for the evening, he found the Motel he was going to stay in was already booked, so he made arrangements at another Motel close by. He left on his bike to make this short trip, it was during this ride a deer , jumped out in front of him, and the rest of the story is history. Like I said, if it can happen to him, it can happen to the rest of us.

I wouldn't want to think about nailing any size deer on my motorcycle, but the odd's are someday we may have to confront this very situation, so be ready and keep a sharp eye out for them. I can say I have hit deer in a full size van, the deer lost but the van took quite a hit. I had mounted these deer devices on this very same van and thought I had accomplished something, I did notice when I saw deer near the road they always took off into the woods (that was a good thing), these things always made them move, this seemed to work until that fateful morning. The morning I mashed this deer, she came flying out of the woods like her *** was on fire, so there was absolutely no way to miss her. Because of this I try not to ride after the sun goes down, I know I miss some of the best time there is to ride, but I also miss the deer I know are around here waiting to run out in front of me at any time.

One other little note, when I hit this deer I was so out of it I didn't even know the name of the road I drove on every day. I was about one mile from my home and know these road names like the back of my hand. After this happened I couldn't think at all. I would advise when a group does go riding, have a cell phone and some type of map information at your fingertips for road names, north vs south ect. Accidents will get us all messed up to the point we don't think straight. Remember this, if someone is in an accident there is such a thing as the Golden Hour, this means a victim has the best survivability if taken to a hospital within this time period. If this accident has rattled you to the point you are unable to tell emergency operators where you are, it could mean the difference between life and death for yourself or that person. All I can suggest is Be Prepaired at all times, you just never know.

Ride Safe,

clutchless1
