I wanted to post this guys as a FYI. I have attended this benefit ride several times in the past as it has personal attachment as well as a good cause. I wont be able to attend this year as I will be out of town. The officer the event is named after was the son of one of my wife's friends, my wife has attended and helped as a volunteer several times. There is live music good eats a raffle usually for some cool stuff and a memorial group ride with police escort. A lot of cruiser guys but all bikes/riders are welcome and it all goes for a good cause. So if your looking for an excuse to do something or the cause is something you have a shared feeling about please consider showing them your support.

I went Deputy Rice's funeral. Just watched the procession from the roadside actually.

There are two BIG cities in Laurens county. I'm in one, Laurens, Clinton is the other. The entire county only has two high schools, Laurens and Clinton.

The night Rice was killed Sheriff Chastain was visibly shaken when interviewed on the news. Our Sheriff has made news over some personal issues, but based on a few dealings that I've had with the Laurens County Sheriffs Office, I've got nothing but the impression that this is what a police dept should be like. LCSO is worthy of support IMHO.

If anybody's doing this event maybe we could meet up. I'm not interested in riding in a close formation parade. But I'd consider throwing in my $15, checking out food and entertainment, then breaking from the group and doing a little riding of our own. There is, suprisingly, enough interesting roadage around Laurens to entertain a FJR for a good 45 minutes or so. Just ask Wheat.

There's also a grill on my back porch, a GOOD Italian eatery in Fountain Inn and a GOOD Mexican place in Simpsonville-just throwing some stuff out there.

I agree on the formation ride its un-nerving at best and not my cup of tea. I will go next year I'm sure but IMHO most formation rides with mixed skill riders (me included) is like a game of russian roulette at best.

September 20 will find me camping near the beach on Sapelo Island, so count me out for this one.

Really sorry, too, because I grew up in Due West, and rode to Clinton for PC football or on the way to I-26. I agree about the riding; quiet country roads with curves and dips and woods and pasture.
