I suspect it would be a better ride later on in the year, when the rain has washed the gravel and salt off the road.
Perhaps we should move the ride. The North GA mountains were great yesterday. :yahoo:

Let me know, I am ready to ride!

OK, Devils Triangle ride cancelled due to poor road conditions.

Where do you want to meet in North Ga mountains? Dales at Suches? Saturday Morning is good for me, tell me where and lets meet and ride together.
Sounds good to me...Dale's it is...Saturday the 22nd...say 10:00 ish?

Any of you lurkers out there are welcome to join us! :clapping:

Looking forward to it...this will be fun! :yahoo:
Just so we're on the same page, Saturday is the 23rd, and I'll be there as close to 10am as possible. See ya then. Do you like fried pies? I know a great place in Blue Ridge that makes em.

My bad, you're right, the Saturday is the 23rd. See ya then. Looking forward to the fried pies.

I'm thinking about staying up there somewhere (maybe find a hotel room in Blue Ridge) Saturday night and riding Sunday too.

Calabash,

I'm in!! Got the seat back from Russell 2 weeks back and I'm dying to try it out.

I was going to sign up for the Devils Triangle run but I see I'm too late. But N Georgia still sounds great.

Dales at Suches is a restaurant I take it?? Will mapquest it to see if it shows up.

Can you or MrTwisty recommend a local motel in the area of the meet? I'll probably head out on Friday after work and spend the night.

Will see you guys at 10 AM.

Glad you can make it! This will be fun!

Dale's is THE ONLY gas station in Suches. Suches is not a big place. If you make it to Suches, you will find Dale's. The only other place in Suches is Two Wheels Only (TWO). It is a restaurant/hotel/camp ground, but only the restaurant is open this time of year.

See ya Saturday! B)

People riding next Saturday already! :yahoo: :clapping:

jet mechanic, how are you going there? Maybe we could hook up and ride down there, I live in Etowah Tn riding down to Blue Ridge and down hwy 60 to Suches. Plenty of places to stay in the area.

Calabash,

A ride down the Parkway sounds good.

I was looking at I-85 to I-26 and then crossing over on Hwy 64. I see that brings me out just south of you on Hwy 411.

Can you recommend Hwy 64 at all this time of year? Or should I just go up to I-40 and cross over to 411??

I think gasportrider is in. He e-mailed me earlier tonight.

Yeah! I'll be there on my new black scoot. I look forward to my first group ride on it.

I'm open for 2 days of riding and will complete the break in mileage. Anybody wanna be the lead dog for a modified MOTO MAN run?

Maybe hotel plans can be left open as dictated by where we go and how fast we get there? Just a thought.

BTW, I'm glad there is going to be a new thread for this ride.

Calabash, could you please be a little more specific about the road conditions on the Devil's Triangle run... such as what road were poor conditions found, why were conditions poor, etc.

Somewhere during my riding career, I intend to taste test the good parts.

Would highly appreciate the input. Thanks, Heidi

Edited to add: Just went further back into thread history & found some of the info I seeked. Thanks for the scout riding & update.

Heidi,

the road has bumpy asphalt patches due to freezing, there were no barriers on the downhill side, luckily I came the other way, the road is covered with a dusting of salt again due to freezing, gravel was in a some curves along with the dusting of salt, patches of salt dumped on the road was slowly being washed off, the road was carved out of the side of the mountain so there are no shoulders and with a hard rain the side of the mountain washes off onto the road. Construction trucks ride through here leaving their trail of dirt behind. The weather is a big factor with this road, I suspect when it warms up it would be a better road to ride, I would only do the last 6 miles of the ride if I were to go up there again, and ride it back and forth like they do the dragon.

Thanks for the detail. Much appreciated Calabash.

Wish that I was joining you in your N.Georgia adventure. I luv me some N Georgia! Perhaps next time, Heidi

Just FYI: most sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway in western NC are CLOSED during the winter months, esp. the sections that have any elevation. The stretch from NC191 just west of Asheville to west of Balsam Gap near Sylva is always closed. The piece from NC80 to west of Craggy Gardens is always closed as well. Doesn't matter if it happens to be 75º that day, if the calendar sez February or March, count on the high elevation sections to be closed.

In the early Spring or late Fall, always check the BRP website before leaving home.

BTW, 64 should be OK w/ light traffic this time of year, but expect wet pavement (and early morning ice!) on every shaded corner, as the sun never reaches it to dry it out. If you're traveling early morning or after dark, best stay on the Big road.
