Yes I already read the pinned NERPT thread about anti-freeze from 2006. But the thing about NERPT topics is they tend to leave you with more questions than answers sometimes.

I going to do this https://www.fjrtech.c...tem.cfm?item=43 and I've never replaced bike coolant before myself. My question is simple and probably stupid.

I bought this 50/50 premixed Zerex DEX-COOL anti-freeze https://www.amazon.co...t/dp/B0033QQ4U8 and I notice it lists cars but it says nothing about motorcycles.

So is this coolant safe for me to use on my FJR? Since it's already 50/50 premixed, once I drain and flush the coolant system (with distilled water) I can pour this straight in correct?

Yes!

Dex-Cool is not the same as what was in the cooling system when the bike was new.Dex-cool is a different compound then the green anti freeze. They should not be mixed.Dex-cool in orange in colour.

Keep the green anti freeze.

If you do a flush with distilled water and fill with 50:50, your overall dilution will be higher than recommended - the Feej holds on to quite a bit of fluid unless you go to extradinorary lengths (*******). You might want to do a flush with the diluted AF after the distilled water.

Forget the flush with distilled water, it's not needed unless the cooling system has been seriously neglected.

Do yourself a favor, buy three quarts of Honda HP Coolant and stay away from Dex Cool or any variety of...

My $.02

I'm with FJRJoe. I wouldn't ever use Dex-cool in any vehicle. I use to be an auto tech and any vehicle that came with Dex-cool in it leaked from every gasket you can imagine and it sludged up the radiator like nothing I have ever seen. I have to say my experience with it was not good. I think the good old fashion green coolant is best. Just my 2 cents.

Yup...Use the Penzoil 50/50, or anything green just like it. I wouldn't use Dex-Cool in my bike, but then I'm not gonna change the coolant for a long time. I ain't fixin' what's not broken.

Also, it's NEPRT with the P first and stands for Never Ending Pointless Recurring Threads.

Dex-cool avoidance mode here. Lots of late 90s/early 00's GM vehicles at work, Dex-cool OEM, and every last stinking one of them has had cooling system problems: stuck thermostats, clogged radiators, mysterious loss of coolant.

The **** is slow death.

The problem with it is the corrosion inhibitors in it will drop out of solution and make a dark orange mud all over everything. That nasty **** that's inside the recovery tank is also inside the entire cooling system. Sometimes chunks of it break lose and start swimming around the system. It's not corrosion doing floating around in there, it's **** from the antifreeze!

Never, ever, ever, use Dex-cool antifreeze in anything you want to keep longer than a week.

Hmmmm.... I had it in two GM vehicles over the last 15 years and had no problem. Maybe I was just lucky.

GP

Now that Walt mentions it, I had a 2008 Impala for work. One day at around 30K miles, I see what I think is oil on my driveway. Turned out it was the cooling system taking a **** and the slimy oily stuff was Dex-Cool. It was leaking everywhere.

I had forgotten about that.

Ok. This is what I'm talking about. Warchild says "Dex-Cool is the ****" from his ******* tutorial and others say they've used it for years with no problems vs others that say steer clear of it and it's the worst thing to use.

I guess I'll just put back in the bike what's already in there.

I'm still confused.

edit: sp. geyser

Well... I didn't use the Green **** OR the Orange ****; I used the BLUE ****! My dealer, Hudson Cycles, recommended Spectro year-round pre-diluted when my thermostat took a dump a couple of years ago. I plan on draining and refilling with the same before the season starts this year. Also, Spectro is in Brookfield, CT so I can bang on their door easily if my bike becomes a rolling geyser due to their product.

Why are you confused?? The bike came with green stuff in it. Continue using green stuff. I'm not big on changing things around just 'cuz someone on the internet says they found the next best thing. Believe it or not, the manufacturers kind d of know what they're doing...Sometimes. :)

I'm with you...

I did the same thing after reading Warchild's "blow-job" Bought the Dex-Cool, then after reading the forum found lots of reasons it didn't seem to be the best idea. Bottom line, I have an unused gallon of Dex Cool in the cabinet, and used the green stuff (Prestone extended life). But that FJRtech article has sure sold a lot of Dex Cool.

one thing is for sure - there is no shortage of strong opinions on any topic in this forum...
Yup, everybody knows everything.

Georgia - I don't know about Dexcool. But why even take the risk if there is plenty of stuff out there you can use and still sleep easy at night? I like the Honda pre-mix stuff because it's readily available, easy to use, and I simply *know* it will work without drama. And while I respect the wrenching/technical abilities of my good friend Warchild, I believe that flushing the system with distilled water is a complete waste of time and wholly unnecessary. Simply drain as much as you can, and refill.

Millions of vehicles (using DEXCOOL), yes some problems with the cooling system..................know what, same sort of problems with vehicles with the green stuff. I don't believe the 'hype' concerning DEXCOOL, but you certainly have options.
