After watching ebay, craigslist and FJR Forums classifieds for half the winter I decided while I was in Mankato, MN yesterday to swing by the Yamaha dealer. I walk into the showroom not expecting to see any FJRs and I was right, not one to be seen. One of the guys asked if I was looking for anything in particular and I told him an FJR. He leads me back to the bosses office. John the boss says he has a new 08 being shipped and should have in about a week. Says he has a good discount on it. I ask if he is interested in trading a 04 1300VTX with a little over 20,000 miles. He says sure. Earlier in the winter at a couple of other Yamaha dealers I was insulted by what they offered for it. After me telling him about my VTX he shoots me a price, a little haggling and price comes down a little more. We sign the paperwork. Done Deal.

Now the waiting.

Welcome to the collective.

First thing first: order some frame sliders (TOGs, whatever you wanna call 'em.) Good thing to look into while you're waiting.

Second thing: Bin O Facts

Seek, and ye shall find. Pay attention to the stuff to check on a new bike, there's some bolts to check the tightness of, saddle bag locks, etc. Also, take a look at the front forks, dealers assume that bikes are set to Yamaha's 'stock' settings, but often aren't, and occasionally the front forks will even be set differently left from right!

Oh, and one more thing... :yahoo:

Dealer called yesterday and said that my new FJR would be ready to pick up today. Forecast high for today was like 44 degrees , wind out of the northwest at 10-15 mph. I was able to hold off till about 11:30 when it was getting close to 40 degrees. Had about a 45 mile ride on my VTX to get there. Hands got a little cold but not real bad.

When I pulled into his lot the FJR was sitting out front all ready to go. Did the paperwork and salesman showed me all the finer points of the bike and I was ready to roll. Kind of nervous as I had never driven a bike with much more than half the power of the FJR.

I was so impressed with it that I had to take the long way home, even though it was only 44 degrees by then. Great bike I'm sure that I'm going to really love it.

I picked up some sliders that will get installed soon. As far as the YES I think I'll wait for a while on that.

I want to thank all of you on the forum for all the good information that I picked up here.

Congrats on your new bike. Farkles are expensive and needed. Check out Gerbings heated clothing for those cold days. My group regularly rides at 35 and above with no problems.

You're gonna have a serious amount of fun and this is a great forum.

make sure you read the FAQ section and follow all the new bike checks especially the saddle bag screws. i know the dealer said he did them but i bet he didn't. the guy who assembled my bike looked me right in the eye and lied. when i showed him the screw with no locktite on it he said he tightened it down enough it didn't need locktite.

Congrats on the bike. You've probably already found this out but the throttle is very easily moderated (so the terror or all those horses is easily reigned until you want them; below 5,000 she's a kitten, above a tiger). The YES warranty is a crap shoot (alot of guys have had to use it, and I'm sure a lot more have never had a claim), personnally I didin't get it (and never needed it) so it worked out for me; results may vary so do whatever you need to do. Again, glad you like your new ride.

Further congrats on the new ride.

As to the YES being a crapshoot, absolutely true, as is all insurance. The question as to whether or not to buy insurance (or YES) has to be, can you afford to be on the losing end of the gamble?

YES will cost you about $350 from D&H. A complete engine rebuild (after the first year warranty runs out) can cost you almost as much as the bike is worth. My YES is due to expire in September of this year unused. If I could pay another $350 for another 4 years of full warranty coverage I'd have the check in the mail.

Congratulations on your FJR!!! You remind me of how excited I was back in Feb anticipating the arrival of my own.

I have a few blog posts on my site that cover some inexpensive farkle, reflective decals and such. Check it out if you'd like:

Enjoy!

One other thing about Y.E.S. - there is absolutely no advantage to buy it now vs. buying it right before your normal 1 year warranty runs out. Well, that's not completely true - if the price of Y.E.S. goes up in 6 months you'll have to pay a little more but since they recently raised the price and it doesn't usually go up every year you're probably OK just waiting. I know I ordered my Y.E.S. from the fine folks at D&H 2 weeks before my 1 year warranty ran out.

Not true, but I'm nitpicking. :p

The guy at D&H told me if I had bought the YES when I got the bike (instead of the month before the first year ran out), I'd have gotten the towing reimbursement and travel and recreation interruption protection for the duration of the original one year warranty.

Oh, and grats on the bike. I'm sure you'll love it :yahoo:
