I just got my No-Mar tire changer in the group buy, and now I need to drill some holes in the garage floor for it. I've never done anything like this before, and I don't think my bowstring and a pencil is going to do the trick. A friend of mine used to be a contractor and he suggests a hammer drill and a masonry bit. The No-Mar instructions suggest 1/2" lag anchors, which need a 3/4" bit to install.

So I head down to the tool rental place and ask for "a hammer drill and a 3/4" masonry bit" and the guy pulls down this big hunk of machinery and a bit with which you could put several eyes out at once. A Bosch 11241-EVS, to be precise. The thing's so big, it treats my Givi E45 like it was a custom tool box. It looks like something out of HALO 3.

I bring it home, and it goes through nearly 5" of concrete in less than a minute, and it takes about 20 minutes to drill 4 holes, vacuum out the dust, install the anchors and bolt down the tire changer. The total rental was $15 because I used it for less than 2 hours. I looked on Google, and it looks like one of those goes for about $450 and lists for over $1000. Daaaamn!

THAT was a blast. That was so damn much fun I wished I had other large chunks of concrete to drill through.

That right there is good for bonus points on you "man-card." (Can be cashed in for an extra dose of testosterone when needed.) The wife should be warned. ;)

Nah, what's fun is a powder-charge nailer, uses .22, .25, or .27 caliber cartridges to drive a nail or tack. We have one that we use to fasten cabinets to concrete floors. I'm not allowed to use it. It's treated like a firearm, and locked away, and the user has to be licensed for it.

But I've been around while it's been used, and was allowed to fire one nail, but don't tell anybody.
