It was a half hour program based on one road accident designed to shock...and it did.

We follow a police officer attending a motorway crash where it was proven later a truck driver was busy trying to work out his new mobile phone. He drove into the back of standing traffic at 60mph without braking. The phone was put in the cab by his employer and had not been explained to him.

The driver got 4 years, it didnt say whether the company were held responsible at all.

The car that he hit was a Peugeot hatch back. It was so crushed that only 2 feet of it was visible between his truck and the car in front. He admitted later that when he first looked to see what he had hit from the truck he thought he had hit the next car in the queue and didnt even know the Peugeot was there.

Inside it was a 23 year old woman, needless to say she didnt survive.

We then go in the car with the officer to the house where the girl lived to tell her parents. The camera kept rolling from inside the car to the point where he asked if they were her parents, then shut off.

When he came back to the car he was in a state himself and said that her teenage brother had become hysterical and almost violent towards him. Which sometimes happens when they deliver this sort of news apparantly.

We then travel back to the scene with him. The motorway is completely closed and a huge tailback has formed. We are traveling down the hard shoulder (emergency lane) and come across some dilbert who has decided to use it himself. He got he full roth of this coppers emotions and got booked. Further along the traffic is being shunted off at 10mph by police and our man spots a woman using her phone whilst driving, allbeit at 10mph, she gets it from him as well. To be honest he was at a stage where he should have gone home.

None of this was staged and was very harrowing. Certainly makes you think and has stuck in my mind.

there are a couple of pictures floating around the net of the after affects of an 18 Y.O. girl who was dialing her cell phone when her car drove into the back of a slowed straight truck. The top of the car was peeled back to behind the drivers seat.

She was peeled back too.

I, and all of us I"me sure have seen this innatention on the road due to a cell. I must admit I have caught myself zoning out while making or recieving a call. Hope your documentary makes it across the pond for us all to see.

When I'm in a cage and see someone coming towards me on a cell phone(illegal in Albuquerque) I lean on the horn, hard.

My only wish is I had an air horn. Usually gets there attention. Morons.

I don't do this in heavy traffic but effective on side streets.

It is not only cell phones that should be outlawed. On the slab a while back, doing about 5-10 above the speed limit, This lady went zooming by and I looked over and she was reading a book. She had it open and resting on the steering wheel. Some people should not be allowed to drive.

About 3 years ago in London they introduced a 'congestion charge' for the main city. If you enter between certain hours of the day you have to pay £5 or so. The idea being to keep traffic down. This is now deemed to be a success and they are now trying to now spread it throughout the country in other cities. The next being Manchester where I live and work. The trouble is that they are not doing it in the city centre, but on the main roads that feed the city to as far out as 20 miles away. This means that they will catch me 5 times a day when I have to use certain roads to get to and from regular points of work. It is scheduled for 3 years away as far as I know. If and when its introduced I can see there being riots.

To get back to the thread:

An obvious option to reduce traffic is to introduce a yearly re-test and to toughen up the existing test and driving laws. This way we reduce traffic congestion nationwide and make the roads a much safer place. Will they do this? nope, that would mean less vehicles= less road tax/fuel tax.

IMO,

People should have to be licensed by DMV to use cell phones while driving IF it is going to be allowed.

IMO,

The DMV test should include a driving road course that is administered at the SAME time that an oral test is being administered over the user's cell phone. Both oral and road course must be passed within a certain time limit for cell phone use to be allowed.

If drivers cannot pass this simultaneous test, then cell phone use would be prohibited to when the vehicle is in PARK.

Without this type of testing, cell phone use is a form of legalized impaired driving.

****** phones. And it gets worse and worse. This summer, we will either lose a forum member, or see it come so damn close he/she quits riding. Don't let it be you.

A friend of mine and his girlfriend were stopped at a light in Connecticut on his Honda cruiser and they were ass ended by some ******* teenage girl yaking on her cell phone. They both had multiple fractures of limbs and were hospitalized for weeks and he ended up being out of work for a year. He said there was no way he could have avoided being hit. She told the cops she didn't see them. :swoon2:

Something tells me this thread is going to rapidly erode into a pro's and con's cellphone debate.

I lean on the horn, hard.
They probably have no idea why they got the horn, if even they noticed the horn was for them - 2 cents

The first post was a very interesting perspective that many do not think about...the repercussions.

IBTL if it gets hot in here.

Cell phones are not allowed whilst driving at all in the UK unless parked or handsfree. There is a big advertising campaign about it here at the moment.

A quick and easy way to cut the use of cell phones. Charge $1.00 per

minute if the phone is moving, regular rates if not moving. I'm sure

there is a way to do this.

Sounds good, but that only means the rich b*st*rds would be doing it. And they probably drive worse than the average Joe out there.

Apologies sent to any rich b*st*rds out there...

I second the comment about cops and their computers ( and radios, etc. ). I occasionally do " ride alongs " with these guys and nothing will cause your ass to pucker faster than being in a high speed run and have the driver screwing with the computer and talking on the radio.
