Dropped my FJR, DOH!!!

Tonight I went to put my FJR back in the garage. Thought I had deployed the side stand and I started leaning to the left and it just kept going. I went over and I tried to guide it down as slowly as possible once I realized there was no way to stop it.

One of my first purchases was the Motovation Sliders. Man, I love those things!!!! No marks anywhere!!!

Quite relieved!!! Anyhow, thought I share my good fortune..

WHAT??? you didn't throw ya self under it to save it?????

I sure thought about throwing myself underneath it.

I would have figured that my mirror or saddlebags would have be damaged. Quite lucky and I realize it.

Can't figure out exactly what I did... Keep playing it over in my head. Thought I got my foot on the sidestand tang. Must have been thinking of other things.

Assumed there was damage was was dreading the call to the insurance agent.

If you've thought about sliders, that's one item that I won't ever regret purchasing.

Sliders should be part of the basic package on the bike before it leaves the dealership! A farkle that costs less than $70 buck that can save hundreds of dollars in parts and labor..............

You'd almost think that Insurance Agents would be willing to pay a portion or all of the cost of sliders OR give you a premium reduction should you choose to install them. Think of the money it would save them on claims.

Hmmm. I like that idea.

Did the same thing about 8 months ago. It took me weeks before I stopped trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Thought I had the stand down correctly.

I now have a new procedure for getting off.

1) Engine off. Leave in 1st gear.

2) Release clutch and push bike slightly forward until the force of still being in gear stops you. At this moment apply front brake.

3) Put stand down then releash brake as you lean bike over onto stand.

4) Bike will move slightly back wards greatly reducing the danger of the side stand not doing it's job !!!

I do this every time now.

Thanks for the tips.

Before I received your message. I think I know what I did now. Think I reached back with my foot and thought I had deployed the sidestand to the down position. What I actually did was got my foot on the tang to deploy the centerstand and pushed it down to the ground, which obviously would do nothing to hold the bike up. I never looked down and just started leaning over, an over and over til we were both on our side. Plain stupid. :fool: :fool:

Oh well, got lucky this time.

All of us here know the FJR is a proud and mighty machine...while upright!

When an FJR is laying on it's side, as in the above pictures, it looks so....well....humbled and just plain wrong.

Rick, my friend had his '05 FJR fall over on him when he thought the side stand was all the way down. He said he gave the side stand a slap with his heal to put it down but it bounced against the stop and partly retracted. As he leaned the bike over - same result as above.

I know this is kind of basic, but since he explained what he did, I use my left heal with foot turned out to hold light pressure forward on the side stand as I lean the bike over - always positive extension and my leg/foot is ready to stop the motion if something is wrong. The adv. Motorcycle safety course I took recommends using your right hand to depress the hand brake while dis-mounting also.

Is it possible that Skyway sliders can protect the rear luggage when a bike falls?
