George:.... again, I like your style. A dream here as well. Mid November, always under full moon (or very close). This year is 40th anniversary and going from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas. (varies by year but much of the course is typically duplicated).

As far as being "IN" LOL, god I'd love to ...and as much as I love dirt riding I'm not of the caliber to compete in this thing ...and you're talking money well beyond my disposable income. Big money nowa days (just like everything else). We'd need some serious sponsorship. Maybe we can see if the forum coffers have enough to sponsor us. A million bucks would be a good start.

I've been on portions via dirt bikes of where they often run the course. (ie around Coco's corner etc) Baja is fun, it is truly magic ....when they refer to "Baja Magic" there really is something to that.

But for this oooold & pooooor guy ...spectating and dreaming is as close as I'll be to it ....

PS: thanks for reminding me how oooold and poooor I am :)

OK, I know NOTHING about how to run this.

I GOTTA believe it can be done for less then a million. If it takes that much I'm afraid the magic has gone for me.

Don't people ride as teams, with one bike?

Ian, you ride to here, the I take the next leg to X. Isn't that a possibility with a ****** dirt bike? I'm not there to win, just finish. I know a truck driver that rode with a team and did it in 36 hours.

I'm wanting to take my LD experience to another level. The Baja 1K seems like a logical step.

A guy back east is selling a t-shirt with a quote of mine on it, I think its apropos for us.

RenoJohn, the desire to do it is all the hard work, all the other $tuff is merely minor details that need working out. :D

How much do you figure a farkled bike, with a bunch of spares, tires and a few freinds riding in support vehicles along the route would cost? It seems there are quite a few privateer entries that manage it on a relatively small budget?

I'm speaking what I *THINK* so don't hold me to it.
if you went the sportsman class (non professional) and say a team of 4 riders on 1 bike:

Bike and related $12K (you'd want to start off with a new and well farkled bike ieHonda 650R) suspension, damper, lights, skid plates etc etc

Entry aprox $500?

Hire a pit crew (honda) aprox $500?

pre run ....depending on how many times and the time involved (gas, lodging blah blah) say $1000

Tires parts etc etc etc ...$1000?

Misc stuff ......gear, food lodging etc etc etc etc $2000

So let's say $16,000 to $20,000 for poops and grins.

other factors would be on pre-run you'd want a partner and that would mean another bike ...not necesarily race quality but another bike.

So if you had 4 guys that each threw in 5K ....my guess is you could do it .....and you'd be able to recoup a good portion of the bike and parts when you sold it afterwards so it would net out much less.

Just kinda thinking off the cuff here .....but a team splitting costs could do it without a total cach hemorage.

So, are we all the same aprox size to share a common bike/suspension????? LOL

a million $ might be true for mfgr teams. privateers do it on a shoe string. in those cases, they hope to finish and not finish last. the money will be replacement motors, and expensive sheet and will be finishing toward the top.

teams are the norm. one guy did the whole course solo in DtG and it was pointed out as unusual (and he was hammered by the time he finished).

It would appear that the entry fee, a chase van with some volunteers, a bike with some major spares (tires, shocks, etc.) could get you to the finish line in the allotted time.

We'll have to talk about this at the border before our next LD ride. I'm totally up for it. High place finishing don't mean much to me, participation is what it's all about IMO. I have a friend of a client who runs it every year on a dirt bike, I'll see if I can get some pointers from him.

I never thought about it but Ian made my ears perk up in that " the participation is what its all about" Even if I could only ride for a few miles that would be sufficient for me to be a part of the team, therefore if we can put together a team then I am a player and probably can scrape up a few $$ of support. For sure I can drive a support truck and do some basic wrenching when not riding a few miles. Feeling like GZ I would like to add that to my LDR rides. Also, I have a KLR that could be used if it would work???

been following the baja 1000 for many decades. to have a movie that gives the visuals to the desciptions was excellent. when i first saw DtG (about a year ago) the first thing that blew my mind was how FAST they rode on unrestricted (public access) dirt! i'd seen the numbers but that's not the same impact as seeing someone doing 120mph in the dead of night with nothing more than their aux lighting ... on f'ing DIRT!
I once saw a film clip of a bike rider in the 1000 who had lost all his lighting on the bike and was helped out by a four wheeler in the race by the bike following the truck on a dry lake bed in the dead of night with all his lighting on the truck and the bike following almost on the trucks rear bumper, and did I say they were doing over a 100 mph? Coooool. PM. <><

Yes I really enjoyed the movie DTG.

My hat is off to "Mouse" the guy that rode the entire race on a Honda something? He rode at break neck speed and almost finished without a crash but unfortunatly he crashed with about 150miles to go.

He still finished 16th overall I think. Quite a feat. After 500+ miles he was passing up fresh riders like they were standing still.

I never heard of the dude before DTG but that guy can ride.
