What would the cost of a shop to adjust the valves in a 04. was told on phone $200 now it's 6 hrs of work like $800.00.

I have had some issues with the law so I dont need to drag another person around and shack the **** out of them but to me this seems high?

I'll be going there in a hour or so if some one would have some input let me.

by the the way they have given me stronger drugs now so i don't belive he's in danger.

The average for my 2 checks was about $450. If they needed to actually adjust it would have added about $150. One thing that added to my time was R & R'ing all of the cabling, CC etc. I shoulda yanked the stuff myself.

hmmmm - something sounds fishy..... Shims are about $5 each (on the high end).

Would be interested in hearing:

a.) what is the hourly labor rate

b.) what is the complete list of parts needed

c.) what is the breakdown of labor vs parts

I just stopped today at my dealer to find that out as I will need done quite soon. Mechanic looked in the rate book and quoted $450.-$525.00 That included new plugs, throttle bodies sync'ed, flush and new antifreeze. That didn't sound too far out of line to me.

I'll let you know tomorrow, it looks like the bill came to $1050.00 I was looking for around $500.00. I guess I will start doing my own work, Yuck!!

I think you or they are skipping a step.

1) A valve check is required at 26K. That's probably 2 to 3 hours labor.

2) If it's out of spec (and few are) one could have to have a valve adjustment for additional 2 to 4 hours.

There would be no reason to proceed to step #2 if step #1 is done and in spec. I've had 2 checks and no adjustments.

And this has been discussed many, many times on the forum as searching on valve check cost site:fjrforum.com at Google will yield.

I have another “old school” bike I still ride regularly, an 89 Venture Royale. I have done some work on the Big Red Machine this winter but still have one thing left to do. I have a leaking fork seal. No biggie, right? I stopped by MotoReamo, er, uh, Motoprimo this past Saturday and talked with the tattooed, goateed service writer who was available.

I told him that I would like to bring in the forks, empty and have one of their ever so skilled technicians replace the seals and bushings, which I would supply from their wonderful parts department. Mind you, the forks will be off the bike, drained, springs removed. They just need to use their long wrench to remove the bolt at the bottom of the tube and then replace the bushings and drive in the new seals. A trained monkey or a rookie tech should be able to complete the task in about less than hour if they are REALLY SLOW.

The quote from the speed metal band lead singer wannabe…$270. Yes, like you I thought he misheard me. So I told him, A) I don’t want to buy brand new fork legs; B) the fork legs will be off the bike; C) no fluid to mess with, springs, etc. Just R&R bushings and seals.

Nope, he informed me he didn’t make a mistake. It will be $270…plus supplies. He also informed me that “they take the forks all the way apart to replace the seals. Other shops don’t.” Apparently other shops hire magicians.

I stopped by Midwest Cycle later in the day. They are a local independent shop. $90 for the pair. Drop them off anytime. Needless to say, MotoReamo will not be doing my work.

Moral of the story, I think I would shop around. There are competent techs at shops other than the stealer. And watch their book rates. Not all jobs are book jobs. I don’t begrudge them making a profit, but I will not be ripped off to make them feel good.

Forget about it. Watched the shop do 2 checks last week. One had 80k on it (had the dog **** driven out of it)- valves were in spec.. They just don't go out of spec..

That's not true either.

Some do go out, but most don't. Of those that go out I believe they've tended to be out at 26K, but fine at 52K.
One point when you get charged for replacement shims. If they furnish replacement shims ask for you're old shims before you pay for any shims used in the valve adjustment. What actually happens is that they charge you for the replacement shims and just trade the incorrect size shims from you're bike for the replacement shims out of the dealer shim kit. You're shims go back into the shim kit box to be reused :yahoo: . You don't actually think the shims wear out do you?? In 45 years of working on bikes I have never seen a worn out valve adjustment shim from a functional motor.

Like Iggy says , not necessarily. I just did my own check/adjustment at 45K. I had 3 inlet and 1 exhaust out of spec on the tight side. To be fair though, I don't think they had ever been checked, so they may have been out of spec for a while.

I just had a quote from a local dealer -

Valve CHECK - 2.5 hours, $215.00.

Valve ADJUSTMENT - $425.00 + parts. (Includes the check)

According to Dec. 2007 Motorcycle Consumer News, valve adjustment flat rate is 3.4 hrs($272) plus $62 in parts(gaskets). I am sure if shims need to be changed, it will be more.

The final cost was $1044.38. What was found was the rear shock was bad again second one in 54K. And the radiator cap was bad (replaced warranty) a full tune with valve check 8.5 hours $825. Change fork oil 1.5hrs $112 new battery $105.

But road to work today in 32 degs weather PRICLESS!!!!

Am over it, glad I have a decent job.

That's typical mileage for for the stock shocks. I'm surprised they would have covered them, but whatever. They're essentially disposable and why folks have found the aftermarket ones that are rebuildable.

A valve check cost over $800? You got boned.

I just called Shipps (locally) because I'll be due soon (probably should have done it over the winter).

They quoted me $280 check and adjust if necessary.

He said he was aware of the ECU recall and they'd do that and the trunk base if necessary. He didn't recall the gauge cluster recall which I have yet to do.

He also wasn't aware of a way to put the mileage back on which is the only reason I haven't done it as well.

We'll see how that goes in a few months.
