Hey guys -

I was riding to work yest and after I got off the interstate my engine stopped on its own but the gauges were still on. Pulled off the road, kill switch was on, bike wouldn't restart. I cycled the ignition and it started right up. No problems on ride home, either.

Recall work was done in 2011 - I ran my VIN through the Yamaha recall site yest and it confirms ignition and wire sub-lead were replaced, but main wire harness was not replaced (per recall protocol).

Do I need to get Yamaha to replace the main wire harness now?

Thanks,

Sam

It's your call to if it was me I'd have the main done. Don't want your engine to die when you really need it. It could be a long walk home.

It could be more than one cause.... you could check all the spiders and see what condition they're in. If all good, then keep looking or wait until it happens again with hopefully some more clues.

Kind of hard to see why the fault would be with the main harness.

I would start with the ignition switch. Just cycling that got you going again, so that's the place to start.

Any error codes on the dash, have you checked for any ECU diagnostic error codes.
Yeah there were error codes 12 and 16.

I left it with the guys at D & H since they're the ones who did the recall the first time. I'll see what they say this week.

The other semi common cause is the sidestand safety switch. If it fails while riding, the bike thinks you've put the sidestand down and will crash when you make a left turn, so it kills the engine.
I recently experienced this problem and documented it in this thread:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/159487-going-70-in-the-fast-lane-bike-dies-i-dont/?p=1169332

BTW, I ordered a new switch but am still running around with the old one bypassed until I get around to changing it.
Could be something simple like this - I didn't try to start it in neutral, but I would think if it were the sidestand switch, cycling the ignition shouldn't make any difference.

I'm thinking of filing a NHTSA complaint regardless - engines shouldn't die at speed.

FWIW

Code 12 -- no normal signals from the crankshaft position sensor = Unable to start; Unable to run

Code 16 -- Stuck throttle position sensor = Able to start; Able to Drive

As mcatrophy once said, sometimes the FJR doesn't read the manual and may act contrary to the code tables. Both sensors, wires and connectors are very close together on the right side of the engine by the timing cover. Could be something pinched or damaged. Any recent work to the bike (or a tip over

)?

Thanks for the input. I had a tipover back around 2010 to that right side, but nothing since then, so that seems remote to be having a problem now.

Mech at the dealer says he thinks it was the crankcase position sensor that sent a fault code that killed the engine, but it may never happen again. He recommends just riding as is unless it happens again. I think I might replace it anyway.
