Engine dies on an 08 FJR

I'll bite...
The bike will only start if it is in neutral, or if the kickstand is up AND the clutch is disengaged while the bike is in any gear.

If the bike is in any gear and the kickstand is down, the engine will stop (doesn't matter whether the clutch is engaged). This is a safety feature to prevent you from driving around with the kickstand down.

Possible reasons that this problem "just started" today:

  1. Your bike had a faulty kickstand switch that suddenly started working (unlikely).
  2. You never tried putting your bike into gear with the kickstand down before.
It may be true that I never tried putting the bike into first gear with the side stand down and just discovered today how this safety feature works. But I rode an 03 FJR for 7 years and that bike worked differently. You could put the 03 into first gear with the clutch engaged and the side stand down and it would stall only when you engaged the clutch. Could the 08 work differently, that is, the way you described?
Uhmmmmm....my '04 taught me that once the stand was down and I "snicked" it into gear the engine would stop.

Uh...er....my '05 does exactly the same thing. Stand down, put it in gear and the engine quits until the transmission is in neutral or the sidestand is UP.

Maybe there was something wrong with your '03.
Maybe. In any case I gather from all the responses that my 08 is working the way everybody (except me) expected it to work. I feel relieved. Thanks for your help.

If you install the rollers on the side stand and put it down on first gear, it should not stall. You can either go to the dealer to ask for the roller under warranty or sell the bike cheap.

I'm old enough to remember a time when street bikes did NOT have this feature. When I took an MSF course in 1980, one thing stressed was checking that the side stand was up before driving off (as part of the start procedure!).

I had a Honda 750 in the day. Scared the brown out of me when sparks flew and something clanged back into an upright position on a left turn... Killer when you use the sidestand as a pole vault mechanism. Thus the reason for a sidestand sensor and kill switch becoming a safety feature.

Young 'uns! :glare:

Ah yes, I remember the day. People would pull up alongside you waving wildly and pointing down at your foot. Huh? What's wrong with them? Oh.......it's tough to look cool when one is riding around with the sidestand down.

Ummm, My 03 will shut down immediately if it's put into any gear while the side stand is down.

No bike that I have ever seen has an interlock on the clutch lever.
There are other motorcycles with different inter-lock 'patents' -- Suzuki (maybe?). You always have to disengage the clutch to start a (relatively recent) Suzuki (no matter what...) -- and I seem to remember a bike that would only kill the motor upon partial clutch release (engagement) when inter-locks were 'in-play'.

'03, also shuts down when in gear with sidestand down, regardless of clutch.

The only clutch interlock is for starting. The starter will not engage if the clutch is not pulled unless it's in neutral. The starter will not engage with the sidestand down if it's in gear, regardless of clutch.

Sidestand down + in gear = no motor. Period.

Your bike IS working as designed, and if your '03 worked as you described, it was not.

My 1979 Yamaha XS750 has that feature. side stand down and in gear = dead engine. same for my 1983 venture. Yamaha's have had that for a very long time. I think it became a standard safety feature on yamaha bikes in 1977-1978 as it is mentioned in the service manual I have for the XS750 and that covers 77-79..

Perhaps an AE version??

When you tap the shift lever on a AE version, the clutch disingages via computer control. The kickstand, if in the down position when while the motor is running, stops you from activating the transmission button located on the left handle bar. If the transmission is in gear when you put the kickstand down, the motor will stop running.

I don't mean to offend and point out the obvious here, but if you had the blue FJR, this thread would be irrelevant, as you do not need a sidestand at all. All blue FJRs will levitate right where you put them. Very handy if you need to lean one all the way over (without touching, of course) to the ground and clean the lower fairings.

You non-blue feejers with your kickstands flipping to-and-fro, pu-leese...

I recommend blue paint and a sidestand removal, as quickly as humanly possible. That sidestand kill switch thingy is NOTHING BUT TROUBLE.

HA HAHA HA HA HAHA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa...
