Now I feel bad. Since I have a diesel truck that takes 15 quarts I usually buy my oil in bulk an use either Chevron Delo or Rotella in 15/40 depending whats on sale at the time. It works out to be around 9-10 bucks a gallon.

Carry on

If only somebody had compiled the various discussion into one place...sort of a like a Best Of oil threads or something. Man, I wish this place would get it's act together. We just are sloppy looking when it comes to presenting our place to newbies.

And that searching thing is just completely overrated anyway.

I was not all that impressed with Rotella, it's just cheap IMHO.

I run Yamalube, the same oil used by Vale Rossi, you know, the multi-time moto GP champion.

As long as you keep clean oil in the crankcase, it probably really does not matter.

The number of failed FJR engines due to running the "wrong oil" would be........

Have a great Easter, and remember what the day is all about.

I like Rotella, it's cheap and it works. They add special goo that helps the tranny and shear... or at least I like to think so. And tell me who makes Yamalube? Not Yamaha. I have not seen Yamaha's refineries or petrochemical plants producing said lube. Just askin' ;)
Oil and gasoline is a bloody commodity that some other large oil company makes for Yammer and they add what ever, if anything, to it. Soooooo. Why's it so special...? Maybe marketing... ya think?

Don't be sorry. I would love to know what kind of oil SkooterG uses in his FJR with over 222222 miles on it. I'm afraid of the BBQ that might result.
I believe the Skooter man uses Shell Rotella. PM him.... as I stand back... ;)
Bingo.

For a very short time, I used the Rotella 5W-40 synthetic. But after the writings of Jestal, I saw no advantage to paying more for synthetic. So, for about 200k of my 223k it has been the Rotella 15W-40 conventional oil. Oh, except for recently, the Mobil Delvac1300 15W-40 conventional has been cheaper than the Rotella so I have used it on a few oil changes.

I see a common thread here (no pun intended), SkooterG buys what's cheap (a man after my own heart), and it works. Go figure.

223k, oil changes at an average of 4500 miles = 50 oil changes. At a bit over $20 for an oil change (for oil, filter, and crush washer) that's over $1,000.

**** starts adding up!

Don't even get me going on tires!

It does add up rather quickly; however, that's the maintenance on the scoot. Could be more if you bought all Yammerlube or high end oils.
I now change my oil every 5K, why...? I liked what Ig wrote about ease of remembering when to change it. Maybe an added advantage is getting the contaminants out earlier without buying high $$$ synthetic filters. I really do it mainly to remember on the 5's I have to change it. No more gee is it 48K I change it or 54K, or did I miss a change...??? When did I put those tires on too...???

Wallyworld Supertech filters under $3. One gallon Shell Rotella-T 15w-40 dino juice, usually around $10/Gallon, change oil every 5K for $13, what a deal.

I have more $$ for that high end Chevron Super Duper Premium gas to go riding. :p

Now tires…. I do like the Michelin PR2's (although not cheap) due to longevity, not the best grip, but a nice compromise IMO.

Being Easter and all, I'd like to offer a defense to the noobies and others who don't know to use the Google search protocol instead of the actual "Search" button found at the top of the page. The Invision search will reveal everything and all... TOO MUCH

Maybe put the Google search technique as an additional sticky in the New Members FAQs. (That advice is kind of buried in the Software and Board Operation area.)

Example: The Search button at the top of the page may not find your topic. So instead try this:

click on Google, then type in your query, such as...

engine oil site:FJRforum.com

Doing so, I found out the Great Skooter has abandoned Shell Rotella due to change in formula...I think. And why do people hate me so much for using Amsoil?

Okay, back to our usual wacky, sarcastic, surly, mean tempered, religious for a day, but quite FJR knowledgable selves...

Lets see here…

Post #2, #7, #13, and now Post #33 clearly states how to search using Google, all very helpful. In the past before the Forum became a more kinder gentler forum, you'd only get Google is your friend. Period! No mention of how to search via the site:fjrforum.com method.

….Google is your friend try a search like this: Oil site:fjrforum.comAlso try Best of NEPRT.

…. so use the site:fjrforum.com oil thing and you'll find numerous posts from every angle that will help you out.

google is your friendgoogle "oil site:fjrforum.com" or ????? site:fjrforum.com

I must admit first signing up was rather overwhelming and there was so much to read and comprehend that most just seeped out thru the seams. I have NOT gone back to look to see if it's anymore user friendly then when I first signed up a few years back. Maybe a newb section 1, 2, 3 would help, maybe it's there we just have a hard time with it.

BTW - It was a Friday.

Anyway just to sum it up, Google search by doing, Oil site:fjrforum.com. ;)
