A couple of years back I stayed @ Elkins Motor Lodge. This place is fine... nothing fancy... outdated actually... but it was clean, inexpensive & has a restaurant on premises. To be honest, I don't remember if it had a bar. We were drinking at our table, though... so, I am assuming so.

Do you guys make the ride down in one day or two? If you take two days, where do you spend the night?

Elkins, WV is the best place to stop if you are going to use two days. 219 in WV is one great road and there are plenty of motels in Elkins.

That is roughly my plan for the trip down this year too. We're planning on taking 3 days to get there from here (Southern NH) and using minimal Interstates. I'm planning on heading westward and then right through Shandanken! to get thru the Cats and down Rte 30 (of course) with a first night layover somewhere near loverly Scranton. Second Day we'll layover in Elkins, then third day down the remainder of 219 (can't get enough of that road) and arrive in Henderson, NC on Thursday the 20th.

Anyone wanting to tag along with that basic itinerary is welcome to join us. Or propose a better one!

FWIW - The Days Inn in Elkins used to be the town's hospital which has (barely) been converted into a hotel. The rooms are tiny, as you would expect in a hospital, and a little bit creepy, but it's comfortable enough and cheap. They do have a restaurant attached, somewhere in the basement, that has a liquor license. However nobody there even knew how to make a martini. Better stick with beer! There's also a breakfast type restaurant out back if you want more than the continental breakfast.

On another trip we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, which was considerably nicer, but more expensive. There is a great pub a few blocks walk from the hotel for dinner and libations.

The Super 8 in Elkins is just a little south of downtown and there is a nice buffet style steak house across the street. No bar there.

The Holiday Inn is much newer and within walking distance of the downtown area where there are drinking establishments. My daughter and I stayed there one time when they first opened and it was very nice and reasonably priced, though higher that the Super 8.

There is also an EconoLodge on 33 just east of 219 that is inexpensive. I've never stayed there so I can't comment on what they offer.

I thought the place looked odd. Being a converted hospital makes a lot of sense. I forgot about the restaurant in the hotel. It is closed on Monday's. Guess what day I was there?

Being that I get to "visit" a lot of hospitals for work, it was instantly recognizable when we walked in the doors. It has the feel of an old VA hospital with the heavily worn but highly polished terrazzo floors in the lobby.

You guys might want to book your rooms ahead of time in WV/VA/OH. We had a royal bitch of a time getting a room on the fly on the way down to EOM/KY last year. Seems theirs lots of workers in the area exploring for oil/gas and just about every hotel room in the state(s) are full up.

Then again, if it hadn't have happened I wouldn't have got to ride Ohio 555 in the dark, leading 2 noobs. Good times!

I don't think those guys were exploring for oil. The guys we met in the bar in Dunmore, PA may have had some gas, but it was probably from the healthy food they were eating.

I think those "migrant" workers were there in the cleanup effort from the aftermath of Irene. I wouldn't really expect to have the same problems this year. But we too ended up having a little trouble finding rooms, and will probably succumb to advanced planning and booking. I'd really prefer to just "wing it" and stop wherever/whenever we feel like it.

YES!!!!! I just checked in and seen the dates. My wife is now looking at me like im crazy because I just stood up and thruogh out the touchdown sign. I could not dial the hotel number fast enough. Room booked, cant wait. Thanks again for stepping up to plate guys, or thanks Annette for pushing him. We are ready to go. :drinks:

Someone who is not reading this thread could be miss led by the info thats still on the site. Seems like some of it should be deleted before someone books a room in KY.

Oh, and I have huge news regarding the banquet festivities. Because of my twisted sense of humor, I'll give everyone this clue - It has something to do with an organization that is located very close to EOM HQ...

I am thinking about heading out to CFO in Wisconsin and then working my way down to EOM from there. If that doesn't work out and I head down to EOM directly from home then I may join you as you go past my driveway. I have a couple of spare rooms if you want to stop here the first night. From my place to Elkins with no slab can be done in one day but you can't spend too much time on breaks if you want to arrive in the daylight.

Just reserved a room on line. Just an FYI saved a couple bucks by using the senior rate, $57.xx verses $59 something. I know...not much, but us old retired guys on a fixed income need to pinch every penny. See you all there.

Ehh, nothing really, just enough coming down to say it's snowing and make it a cold yucky day. It will only stick at the higher elevations.

I might remind you all that last Sunday I was out riding all afternoon in vented pants. Just a few more weeks and this should all be over.

Currently getting hammered by the lake affect, about 1/2 a foot so far. It's days like this that I don't mind the bike being in the shop
