I have done a back scenes tour of Cass's site before... but have never ridden the train, there. I'd like to go up into the mountains on it when the leaves are changing. I'm sure that you folks will have fun on you tour. Did you book one of the tours that include a stop for lunch? That has to be a very cool experience.

Whittaker Station is located four miles up the track from Cass. At Whittaker Station – the location of the authentic logging camp recreated by the volunteers of the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association, passengers have the opportunity to get off the train to enjoy the views, purchase lunch and tour the camp. Restrooms and a concession stand are available at this stop.

Wife and I are hoping to run over to Hillbilly Hot Dogs and possibly to Matewan for a little bit of history.

Google maps puts it around 160 miles one way. We're riding more than twice that to get to Lewisburg.

And I am hoping to just ride the crap out of my FJR every day with a few fellow hooligans . Who is signing up for that ride
Really? There's gonna be riding at this meet? In West-BY GOD- Virginia?

Good luck finding some decent roads...

Don, whatever you do, don't go driving in the hinterlands of West-BY GOD - Virginia without taking some dramine along. Dizziness is dangerous behind the wheel...with or without alcohol.

It looks like a good time, have fun Don!

Marie (wifey) and I plan on doing the New River Gorge Bridgewalkhttps://www.bridgewalk.com

Also, would like to go to the Green Bank NRAO.https://science.nrao.edu/facilities/gbt/

Both look like great photo ops, and interesting things to do.
Both are very worthwhile! Go to Pies and Pints in Fayetteville while you are there. Excellent pizza.
That's where I had planned to go, glad to hear it's a good stop. Thanks!
Do you know if 82 (Fayette Station Rd.) is a paved road? I thought we'd take it to Fayetteville for lunch, then take the bridge back over after.

I'm with Ray. LOML would like to go, but can't. If I ride my ass off without her... hell, that's what I'm going for. If I go sightseeing/touristing without her, well, that might be different.

Yes it is paved, but there are some knarley switchbacks. Just take is slow. I was going to suggest taking the old route over Fayette Station bridge. Either way, make sure you stop at the New River Gorge Bridge/Canyon Rim visitors center. We were just there the beginning of the month.

...with all of the great roads in WV, I personally wouldn't spend the day riding the slab back and forth to HHD (been there twice during the SEO Rambles). Now you could take back roads there and back...if you want to have some fun.

Thanks again! Yes, we are going there (visitors center) as I believe that's where you sign up for the bridge walk. We plan on making a day of it.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? JSNS, Are we there yet? Are...

Thurmond, where a lot of the outdoor scenes in "Matewan" were shot, is an interesting place to visit also https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/thurmond.htm

I visited there in 2003 wanting to see the movie's location and found the town had a fascinating history of its own. The Park Service owns most of it now and they have an excellent visitor's center in the old (restored) train depot.

Only paved road into Thurmond crosses the New River on this interesting old bridge

Can anyone that lives in the Lewisburg area please post the average temperature range for the timeframe of the EOM? I'm in the packing stage. Is it too early??

Came twice through Lewisburg on the way home from EOM. Gets cool at night in September, one year was 35F and frost on the bike overnight. Warms up soon though, but we were headed north, so can't tell you what the average daytime high is.
