This very warm welcome is putting a lot of pressure on me. You know I have a history of booking rooms and cancelling

That said, Mini-Me prolly should make the trip north and this would be a perfect opportunity to fly into Nashville and ride home.

1. ionbeam and Mrs 'beam: I'm thinking you're going to EOM. Would you mind having company on the ride home?

2. would any of you southern friends be inclined to plot me an off-major-highway route from Franklin, TN to Wytheville? I could look at a map and do it but there's lots to be said for local knowledge

BTW, I've given up the stogies. They made me drunk

I'm at the Ramada Inn in Wytheville tonight. To be candid, the quality of the rooms is variable. Our first assignment room 173, had two double beds that looked questionable, were hard as a rock and squeaked when sat on. The bathroom had broken tiles, and lots of repairs, lots of mold and didn't seem up to par for a Ramada. I inquired at the desk if the room was typical of the hotel, and was offered a much nicer room with two queen beds, and in much better condition. FYI, building A in the front is "hypoallergenic" and more recently updated. Even these rooms could use some fresh bathroom caulk and paint, but it doesn't creep me out to walk on the floors. Overall, the hotel is nice if you get the right room, and of course the price is right. The hotel has a Southern Dining restaurant and conference room, and the Travel America next door features Subway and Popeyes. Most restaurants are within 1.5 miles, including Patio Mexicana, Ruby Tuesdays, Applebees, CJs Pizza, Sagebrush Steakhouse a couple Chinese options, Bob Evans, and other fast food.

The hotel features two floors of rooms entered from the outside, so you can park your bike outside your room. The inner courtyard rooms face a large pool and seem pretty nice for socializing. Lots of lobby space. It just poured here tonight as the front passed through. It reminded me of EOM last year. If there is anything you want to know or see, ask quickly...we're outta here in the morning.

Good luck with your ride home...WV really got hammered this past week...lots of damaged roads an flooding. Expect delays, or detours. A good bit of the state is a mess. Safe travels,Tom.

Nearly 400 miles by interstate. Two day journey off-highway but has the potential to be outstanding. Lemme know.

Hey! I'm always up for outstanding :D . I'd rather do that over 2 days than take a highway route.
The only way I'd do highway is if I was chasing a buddy to take the tedium out of it ...

Can't wait to see you, MEM. It's going to be a hoot!

Tom, at $59 per night I think I've survive a weekend. If the sheets are clean and the AC works, I'm ok with that.

I've slept in many a ********. 8 years in the Navy taught me that you can sleep on a rock if you had to. Tequila helps! :drinks:

You are welcome to join us for sure -- but... You may have to go south to get north. I may swing by Knoxville after EOM and visit with me mom for a couple of days. As we get closer to the event I'll now how much time I can take from work and will plan from there.

For the sake of simplicity I plotted it from Tellico Plains, TN. I'll let you figure out your best way from Franklin to Tellico Plains (~200 miles). First stopover night at Maggie Valley Inn former EOM hotel. So first day is about 350 miles from Franklin with the last 150 being a stellar scenic leg! The ~200-250 mile second leg will have you quite twisted all day!! I am sure others will have some input, but the above ain't half bad. Safe journey.

An update to my comments on the Ramada. I checked on the situation at the desk the next morning, and was told the row of rooms along the back of the hotel are for truck drivers, and I should not have been placed in those rooms. The truck parking is in the rear, and apparently "truck drivers break stuff", so they keep those rooms for the contract truckers.

The room we moved into was very good, and the breakfast was one of the best I have had at a hotel, featuring eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, waffles, cereal, fruit, breads and other fare. The dining room is large, clean and nice. We will get along great in the hotel. Look forward to seeing everyone in September.
